We all cried when they put out the small business on Main Street. Then there's the convenience of it all. Has a price.

It ALWAYS did.

Waiting for WalMArt to upsell the "you wait in your car while we bring you what you ordered" service...for lazy people.

I buy almost everything at a store...
I drive my car...to the store...
I find a parking spot then I walk into the store ..
I pay for my stuff then I load it into my car...
I unload it at my H.U.T...

BY MYSELF...

IM GLAD I CAN STILL WALK, ALBEIT with Pfizer induced foot NUEROPATHY...

**** I saw a "store employee shopper at GIANT FOOD STORE"
LAST WEEK...

I SAID TO HER:

" HOW IN THE HELL DOES GIANT MAKE ANY MONEY, PAYING YOU TO SHOP AND THEN LOAD THE CARS FOR PANDEMIC PARAPLEGIC LAZY PEOPLE ?"

SHE SMILED, just shook her head, laughed and then ignored me....

The extra charges that Jonsie talks about are applied to third parties that sell through Amazon's site not directly to the customer.

The consumer ultimately pays for all inflationary costs on the stuff they buy. That includes the loss of buying power of their money via debasement of the dollar and higher costs imposed by stupid gubment interventions in the economy.
Though Joey B. will lie and say it's because of the #PUTINPRICEHIKE

BTW...Amazon SUCKS!

Agreed, the added costs will filter down to the customer eventually. The additional costs that Jonsie mentioned are levied onto the third party for using Amazon's resources to store, pack, and ship their products along with using Amazon as their portal to reach customers. It's not tacked on as an additional line item cost to the customer for their purchase. It's the price of doing business for a little guy that uses a big guy to help sell their products.

You can use Amazon's huge customer base, their web services to promote your business, their logistics in storing, packaging and delivering your products and sell your goods through them or try to create all of this on your own.

I'm not trying to defend Amazon but again, it's the price of doing business. If you were to sell your stuff at a local flea market, you have to pay the flea market guys a fee in order to be part of the flea market. Tables near the entrance or exit, where you get more customer traffic, typically are sold at a premium and cost more than setting up a table way in back near the dumpsters.

Speaking of flea markets, this local one is always hopping every Sunday from spring to fall. For some, it's a ritual to go there every Sunday. Cars line up before the sun rises to get in there. Pretty crazy.

Best deals are right when they open when the stuff is not picked through (better selection but vendors are not very open for negotiation) or at the end when the shopping vultures pick through what is left and the vendors are more open to barter on prices.

When I get some balls I'll short AMZN
It's going to $2100 when interest rates hint at real increases

I'd say more but with Jonsey around

Amazon is doing a 20 to 1 stock split the first week in June. Meaning that if you have 1 share in Amazon, your 1 share turns into 20 shares but the total cost basis doesn't change. 1 share at $3000 (appox cost of a share of Amazon) turns into 20 shares at $150 (the total $ invested in Amazon doesn't change with a split). The stock split is rather cosmetic but it lowers the stock price so more retail investors (little guys like us) have opportunities to buy into it. It will probably go through some volatility before and after the split but trying to time it is a fools endeavor (In my opinion). Additionally, Amazon board of directors authorized the company to buy back $10 billion dollars worth of shares. This peels away $10 billion worth of shares available on the open market. Its a game of supply and demand.

I don't do much with playing individual stock stuff. I'm too lazy and don't have enough time to do due diligence on specific companies. I don't gamble in the market much but I like to watch it. I'm a boring index investor (Boglehead) for the majority of my stuff but I do set aside a bit money to gamble with to keep it interesting.

So a seller sells 50lb of Purina Dog Chow, and pays a surcharge of about $2.40. Another seller sells a 1901 mint Morgan silver dollar, I do not know say 1 lb and pays a surcharge of about $49,500.00. Yup, another Amazon profit center.

You are correct!!!

It is 5 % of the total bill/invoice....

Not a 5% more shipping bill ..
