Autistic teen found alive in shivering cold Utah parking lot 3 years after vanishing from California

Andrew Mark Miller, Fox News, April 16, 2022 - A California teenager with autism was found sleeping in a Utah gas station parking lot three years after disappearing from his family home.

Connerjack Oswalt, who walked out of his Clearlake, California home in September 2019 at the age of 17 and has not been seen since, was found by sheriff’s deputies shivering from the cold as he slept at a Summit County, Utah gas station this week

Oswalt appeared to be homeless and had been reportedly living on the streets there for about two weeks.

His family had searched for him for years, handing out fliers, scanning social media and desperately chasing down fruitless leads. They even moved back to the town of his birth, Idaho Falls, hoping he would eventually make it back there.

"Any hints at something that remotely resembled him, we would follow up on it," said his stepfather, Gerald Flint. "It’s been a real nightmare."

Oswalt, who has been diagnosed with autism and other mental health conditions, was 17 when he left the family’s home from Clearlake, California. His mother, Suzanne Flint, remembered making quesadillas, but when it was time for lunch he was gone.

"I never stopped looking for him. There wasn’t a day I wasn’t searching for him, in some form or fashion," she said. The exact circumstances of his disappearance and whereabouts over the last two years are under investigation, police said.

Deputies had encountered Oswalt multiple times in past weeks, but the teenager refused their help when they reached out for services until finally agreeing to seek warmth in a patrol car at the freezing gas station.

That led them to an outstanding warrant from February in Nevada.

The officers set to work shifting through paperwork, looking for reports of missing and endangered children. About 16 pages in, they found a 2019 missing person report from Clearlake, California. Though it had a slightly different name spelling from the Nevada warrant, the photos matched and they called his family.

When the Flints first got the call, they worried their son had been found dead. After his wife confirmed the identification through a birth mark, Gerald Flint left work, jumped in his car and drove four hours to Utah.

"Everyone in the room was in tears. They went above and beyond, put hours of work," he said. "They could have dismissed it, but they didn’t and that made all the difference in the world."

Social workers knowledgeable about autism took over Oswalt’s care after the reunion with his family, said Summit County Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Wright. His family is hoping to bring him back home soon.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

They moved because they knew CoJack hated Cali?
Idaho falls sounds waaay better
They weren't wrong it was only 4 hrs & nearly 2 yrs away.
That investigation sounds like
Hollywood is calling for the movie rights singing hey baby keep in touch

Sounds like the reunion didn't go well though

God bless the Oswalts!

He was holding a spot in the parking lot for his mom.
For all that time.
And she never showed.

Autism is a unique and exceptional trait. I didn't know much about it other than it was a "disability" until a couple years ago. (I put it in quotes because it's only a disability as we define it).

After working and spending time with someone with autism, I've learned a lot but I'll never figure out how it works... his brain is wired differently.

He's not an outwardly social person but has skills and mental conscience that I will never achieve. For example if I ask him "Steven what day of the week was October 25, 2002" he'll think for a bit while his mind is processing the data and will reply with the right answer "October 25th, 2002 was a Friday." I'm not making this up. I was in disbelief when I first met him and thought there is no way he can figure this out. Time after time when I spout out a random date, he hit it on the head (I Google it to see if he was right). Other things like going grocery shopping with him, he knows exactly where things are located in the store. If things are out of place, he fixes them. He's in control of all the clocks in the house. The microwave clocks have to be on 24 hr time. Me and my kids try to frank with him and change the clock to a different time and on a 12 hr cycle... as soon as he notices it, he'll change it back.

I'm not the smartest banana in the bunch so the bar is set rather low but I'll put my paycheck on this kid in a game of memory vs anyone else.

I'd encourage everyone to watch the movie Rainman. Most of it is on target but some of it is, well, Hollywood. Dustin Hoffman did a great job in his character.

What is disconcerting on this story, for me is that he was lost for so long. I'm glad to read that he was found and able to get back home. I don't think I'd be able rest easy at night or during the day if my child went missing for more than 24 hrs.

I remember the few times I got lost at the mall as a kid (no autism, I would just wander). It lasted for maybe 30 minutes while my parents were a bit absent minded and just browsed around department stores. The panic in my mind as a little kid was pretty scary once I got to the point of trying to figure out what I was going to do for food and bed once the mall closed...

I really cannot imagine how scared this kid must have been in his head about what was "next." I am grateful he managed to survive and even more grateful he was discovered and re-united with his family. They don't all end this way.

Pretty amazing if you ask me....

No one will ever know exactly what he did for three years ..
Kinda scarey really....
He could've been kidnapped and in some weirdos basement like the GIMP...BUT HE couldn't tell you about it....he has no comprehension of time...or a way to explain it to his parents...

Yo Antney, it’s a damn joke.

Oh, I see, we joke about all kinds of offensive material here,
but when it hits close to home,
you take it personally and get all butt-hurt.

As a guy who appreciates the spirit of a joke,

You can kiss my ass…

While you might be right in what you're saying, I'm just letting you know that there are a lot of people that have argued over Autism and given a lot of middle fingers to posters about their belief/attitudes.

And, FWIW, we really don't need to rag on kids. Tis better to be a BOTL than pander to 4 lunatics with similar issues is my motto. Good thing there are no shortage of lunatics here Angel

Joking is one thing. But making fun of a person with disabilities his another. If you can tell the difference then you’re an idiot.

I don't recall such a ruling. I do recall problems with members making comments about Mothers, wives, and children of members, but not much else is off-limits. Now I'm not saying it's good or bad, naughty or nice just the kind of shit men/women say.

I do recall some angry posts about the possible cause(s) of autism creating a few firestorms, but Bloody was involved, so there's that.

Many of us do enjoy a good argument, sometimes, way too much.

In other words, Don't be too easily annoyed, and don't be too annoying.

Completely agreed. And I was joking.

The condition was inconsequential.
The situation was the basis.
And an absolutely absurd and unreal explanation for it was the joke.

You would have been fine if the kid bumped his head and had amnesia.
But others may have been offended because they have been touched by memory loss, Alzheimer’s or head trauma.

But it’s all still irrelevant.
It’s unreal. Hypothetical. Absurd.

A fucking joke Antney…

Anth is my friend, as are many others here.
Can't imagine too many who would willingly trade their lives for his the last 10 years or so.
With all that, he still checks on many to make sure they are okay
I respect his strength.

I don't seek prohibition but would hope hearts and minds would change, though.
That ain't being woke or coatless. And he ain't being overly sensitive due to the fact that it's his reality, not something odd that happens to poor, nameless schlubs down the street.

Now, I have to admit to my own inconsistencies regarding my personal standards. I can only try.
But this isn't the same as funny insulting a friend by talking about his mother's meat curtains.

That never gets old.

Geeze, Gene. Seems we are aligned on another one.

On the Mothers/Wives/Children part, if the poster brings there Mother/Wife/Children into the fray, and pick some fun at them, it wouldn't be out of bounds to make comment. But for chrissakes, when in doubt, take a lighter touch or pour yourself a quiet cup of stfu and move away.

Not sure who originally said it, but if you get offended easily ... Wear a Coat.

There are a lot of people who chose not to wear a coat, they simply left. That also is an option although the community here does feel the loss.

(stepping off the soapbox).

I personally have decided to not offend anyone, anymore.

Carry on, Retards.

Good point, open the door and don't be surprised who walks in.

Remarks can be unkind, but if it's true, is it really offensive?
