Handrail and doorframes painted in upper hallway/stairwell. Interior decorator has chosen a wall color. Sample will be painted before buying a 5gal bucket, because I learn from my mistakes.

Traveling down memory lanes. Converting some old camcorder tapes to digital. I want to get them in a media format that won't degrade over time.

Some snipets... Kids learning to crawl and walk.. tossing food off the highchair and the dog was right there to clean up (I swear the rug rats did it on purpose.. I don't like green beans so toss them on the floor and the dog will eat them. Some clips of family members that have passed away. They may be gone physically but the memories live on and captured on vids.

I'm not too proud to admit that I've shed some teasr watching the tapes.

Bought a log splitter yesterday.

Makes more sense money wise to rent once or twice a year but I was just tired of doing that and rushing to get the job done and machine returned on time.

A 5 miler finished. Been feeling energetic, so I took apart all the wood slats from the front porch bench. Gonna sand it down and refinish with new stain and varnish. Prolly take a few days in between smokes and beer though.

That sounds like a plan, DED.

I'm prolly gonna be busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kickin' contest for the next couple weeks. Prolly gonna spend a buncha money on stuff, too. d'oh!

Momma's gonna want stuff to fill da house. Poppa's gonna need new lawn equipment. Mower, trimmer, edger... my buddy has EGO stuff. Battery operated. He has the mower, edger, trimmer and blower. All take the same battery.

Seen some electric craftsman stuff at Lowe's... Under $600 for mower, trimmer, blower and extra battery pack. Never used cordless yard machines. Not sure if I want to do that or just buy a gas mower. As early as you have to mow in the summer... cordless would probably be best.

I got the EGO mower. Works fine on Cali grass. Not sure how it will work on Florida grass which is likely St Augustine. I got Ryobi for the string trimmer and attachments. I think I’m gonna junk it all and get a Mexican.

Good Monday Afternoon, got up a little late with a stiff back so I'm taking it easy, just a Costco run today. It's already 83° on the way to 85° today.

I have two Ryobi blowers and three battery packs, one for each house. They work fine for leaves and light stuff but I also have the Toro electric when I really need a larger BJ. Not sure how well and for how long the hedge trimmer and mowers work but the reg size battery packs for the blower only lasts about 15-20 minutes. I'm sure the mower pack is larger.

Tornado sirens are hollering and its 9pm dark outside. Moved some potted plants indoors and weighed down other things. NWS says 80mph winds. Looks like a good one. Gonna sit on the front stoop n watch. Neighbor across the street is still shooting on his range.

Yeah... maybe a gas mower and electric trimmer and blower, like I had before. That Toro worked very well and doubled as a vacuum.

Plan is still to price out the artificial for the back yard.

F'ing Costco!

Went to Cosco today, our basket had an unusually small number of items so we tried the self-checkout line. To be clear, in most stores I prefer the self-checkout. The first problem, we could not drop a box in the scanned items bin to eliminate the extra time to load the boxes after checking out. It's too hot here in Georgia to do that in the sunny parking lot. Then the scanned items bin holds much less than a partially shopping cart, so the items must be piled high. They also cannot be removed from the scanned items bin to load the shopping cart as we are checking out. The self-checkout arrangement is not suitable for a volume store where many customers fill up a shopping cart and possibly two carts. This problem needs to be fixed, by re-designing the self-checkout isles, programming self-scanning of items with a cellphone, (like a similar chain already does), or hiring more checkers.

I was unimpressed with the storm. Big promises, little delivery.

But I am impressed with the flank steak and skirt steak I cooked sous vide at 130 for 2 hours. I've cooked those cuts before, long marinade and short sear as well as a low n slow bbq style. Always tough n chewy.

These are as tender as a pork tenderloin. Just falls apart in the mouth. Great flavor too. Did one with lemon slices and cilantro, the other with butter and thyme. Of course both had salt pepper and garlic powder.

Wife is unimpressed says it tastes like meat that isn't chicken.

She wanted me to try making chimichangas for dinner. Got some chicken thawing. Imma have fajitas.

Man, Skirt steak is one of the best cuts out there!

Being unimpressed with skirt steak is like saying, "yeah, that wasn't a very good BJ"... Within reason, even if it's terrible it's still good.

I've had terrible on both those and didn't finish either.

I've thought I could learn to like beef if I could learn how to cook it right. The sous vide is a big fat easy button.

I've tried to do skirt steak a few times but it's expensive and I've never gotten it right. This one was $22/lb but it was just 0.75lb. The flank steak was $18/lb and was about the same weight. $30 for one meals worth is an awful lot but goddamn it's delicious.

Apparently, our local Sam's does that, but even if they have a wand at Costco the scanned item has to go into the scanned items bin to be weighed. They check the weight to make sure some theiving A-Hole didn't slip streaks into a cereal box. We have a gypsy/Irish Travelers camp in this gypsies are notorious shoplifters/scammers.

Gene... this is one reason why I will go to Sam's club over Costco if I can. Sam's club app on my phone allows me to scan sh-t as I put it IN the cart... when I am done loading the cart, I swipe the "pay now" and walk out of the damn store. Receipt barcode on my phone. Buying booze? No worries... lady at the door makes sure you're 21.

Costco is dragging their feet on this and I have NO idea why. It's frickin' brilliant. And people still get in line at Sam's... and I laugh at those people.

Yes, it was your previous post that makes their current system look so lame. I posted the same stuff on the Costco Facebook page, they have no email address, they just want you to call them, something I'm not interested in at all.

Present value calculation:

Most of my adult life I have done my own maintenance on my houses and saved whatever it would cost to have a landscaper/painter, etc do it for me. The dividend was some knowledge gained and the satisfaction of accomplishment.

Now I’m older and have a new calculation rational. I just discovered an underground leak in my bubbler system. It is about 103 degrees outside and I could dig it up, go to Home Depot for the $2 part I need to fix it, cover it back up and be done in about one hour. Or I can call my landscape guy who will send a $15/ hour laborer out and charge me $50 to fix it in about ten minutes, while I lay in the pool with a cold drink and a cigar.

If I do it myself, I get a bad back for maybe the next 4-5 days, walking around stooped over complaining, sweat my gonads off for one hour, take Alleve and listen to the wifey tisk, tisk me incessantly.

Guy should be here any minute. Angel

Shpo Fun:

-Guy with a 2009 Lexus something had an estimate on work to be done. Under $300 in total. He left the vehicle there and is not returning calls. Ticket and Tow time! Getting the work done would have been cheaper.

-Drove a GMC pick up (2010ish). The steering wheel had a suicide knob on it! Reminded my of driving tractors back on the farm.

-Pro-Tip: If you ever buy a vehicle from some mom and pop used car place, put miles on the car early and often. Woman was telling me this is the third time she's had the vehicle in over the last 45 days. The warranty was 30 days or 3,000 miles.
Turns out this dealer and others like them buy vehicles at auction and then send them to a shpo for a good complete physical of sorts.

A car might have five issues. The dealer can tell the shop to fix issues #2 and #4 and leave the rest. They ask for things related to sights (warming lights) and obvious drivability issues (alignments & sounds) but ignore other things- like slow oil leaks.

The thought is, the vehicle will not show issues 1,3 and 5 until after the 30 days or 3,000 miles.

Shenanigans!
