I think this country should stop all pretenses and just face it, we can never win the drug war. That is one reason why I am in favor of legalizing all drugs. Like prohibition, when the war on drugs ends by legalization, drug crime will plummit, and drug crimes are big in this country. We can tax it, for no tax revenues are being paid now for illegal drugs, we can make sure it is safer by having guidelines for production. And I don't buy the argument that we would become a country of drug addicts. Most of us wouldn't be stupid enough to use drugs legal or not. I certainly have no use for them, but I am a realist and I don't believe there is a very rational argument in favor of keeping drugs illegal. The problem is that it would be political suicide for a politician to take such a position. If someone is going to use drugs, they can find them, no use denying that either. And think about it, who would be most against the legalization of drugs? The drug dealers of course. Just like criminals are hoping for more and more gun laws, for they can always get guns, the laws just affects the law abiding.

this time I went to the political board first and posted these comments, and it still ended up here. Well that deserves a drink.

Has anyone got the numbers on the money involved in drugs? Of course the "war" will never stop and no law will be passed let alone be introduced into Congress to legalize drugs. Isn't profit the bottom line in all business these days?

I realize legalizing drugs probably won't happen, look how bent out of shape people get about hemp. I have heard staggering figures when it comes to the drug trade, the GNP for some of these drug lords is probably bigger than many countries in the world. I don't think it too far a stretch of the imaganation to suggest that if we could put like a 25% tax on all illegal drugs, our personal income taxes would all but disappear.

I am torn on this issue. The decriminalization of soft drugs ie. weed, and hash, might be a good way to start. I don't know how much it would benefit us in the long run though. I was in Amsterdam last year, and there approach to soft drugs as well as prostitution has created a very interesting culture to say the least:) It was a fun city, but the drug culture was pretty rampant, and not all of the culture is very pretty.

perhaps that is because Amsterdam is the only place to go for legal drugs, if the entire country were legal, all of the drug use wouldn't be focused in this one area. During the prohibition if there was a city that had legal alchohol consumption, can you imagine what life would be like there?!

If the government can't even keep Cuban cigars out of the country on a 30 year embargo, what makes us think that they can successfully manage and win a drug war? And now the anti-gun crowd wants my pistols and rifles. How will I protect myself when the addicts break in to steal to further their habit?
