I recently watched one of the news programs interview two Native Americans debating the merit of eliminating any and all team names that contain refernces to their culture. Indians, Redskins, Braves, Chiefs, etc. This one hits home because my Alma Mata used to go by the name Chiefs. They are now the RiverHawks, or some other generic name. No big deal, but I truly don't understand the concern. Are Native Americans against sports??? If so, they should promptly remove the statue in the middle of the foyer at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Gambling, afterall, is a sport. Yet somehow a Native American tribe owns it. Hmmmm. Perhaps they wouldn't be against the Cleveland Indians if they received royalties! People need to grow up and realize that IT'S NOT ABOUT THEM ALL OF THE TIME.

i think you have hit the nail on the head. i remember someone complaining about how unfair life is. the correct answer came from one of her friends. "IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU."

You are right on with this on! Wait for "They", "them" or whoever to complain, "But it should be about us!" Team names are not meant to belittle groups, animals or cities! They are meant to inspire the crowds and give the fans something to rally around and cheer for! Charlie

Will we need to rename Indiana, Indianapolis, Sioux Falls & countless other cities/towns. How about
peoplewhocrossedlandbridge for Indiana
peoplewhocrossedlandbridgepolis for Indianapolis
peoplewholivedherebeforebeingmurderedbywhitescum for
Sioux Falls.
Any other renaming ideas?

Great suggestion! This entire "renaming" thing is ridiculous and your examples are the best arguments against renaming teams, cities and locations that I have seen!

gdurfor,Their way ahead of you dude,in my home State of South Dakota, they are alraedy renaming small towns, cities, creeks and Landmarks. They haven't got to Sioux Falls and they probably won't,it's the smaller ones with no voice. But like you I say OK.I guess we'll have to remame the Crazy Horse Monument.Crazymansittingbehindlargehorseheadrock.This has to be the pettiest thing a laywer has ever thought of.I mean should I be upset about the Minnessota Vikings, come on be serious.

johnson28: "pettiest thing a laywer has ever thought of" i thought hot coffee spilled in the lap was a reach, but i'll bet lawyers have things in mind that even you and i horatio have never dreamed of.

How about Fightning Irish, Hooisers, Rebels, Yankees, Volunteers, Hilltoppers, Mountaineers, etc........we could go on and on, but the point is groups should not be offended by the use of names and heritage in the sport world(unless used by the XFL!!!) Should the animal kingdom be upset about their names being used? Of course not! Just another issue for lawyers and civil rights activists to get money and publicity off of at the espense of the fans and taxpayers! Charlie
