Baseball has the only legitimate All Star game amongst the major professional sports. At least until this season. It now seems that the coaches have some desire to garner the spotlight with their decisions and non-picks. Torre embarrassed himself and lost all respect by loading the team with his own boys. Valentine made several questionable picks as well and additionally is not going to start the Big Unit, but will instead favor Schilling. These two "Managers" are numbskulls and an insult to an otherwise enjoyable midseason "break".

It is amazing that the "should be assasinated" Bud Selig just stand by and allow for Torre to pick 7 of his own players. Steinbrener can buy anything he wants I guess. This years all star game is a farse. All the fun was last night anyway. Gonzo won it but Giambi put on the best show.

Joe, I would not call Schilling an inferior pitcher to Randy Johnson. He is among the best in baseball and deserves to start in this game; however, there are a lot of things that should be changed to keep the game at the level it has been at over the years! Managers, players and coaches should choose the alternate players by a vote count, and not leave it to the manager to pick his "home boys" and favorites. Valentine is a clown and should be next manager fired in big leagues, and Torre is a great manager, who has really screwed up this year with the choices he made.
They should increase roster size by a couple more players and not require that each team be represented by one player. That was fine when we had 20 teams or 16 teams, but not today. Charlie

Charlie, you are right about the number of players. More teams simply means that a fixed roster will eliminate deserving players. But I think it's OK for the Manager to pick the alternates. Until this season it's never been a problem. Torre has finally succumbed to the shallow Steinbrenner depths morality. Did Torre ever REALLY have class, or did we just feel sorry for him because his brother died? Pity is a strong emotion. Torre is despicable.
