How to Ruin a Good Cigar

I've got a quick story to share: every night I leave the office between 8 and 9pm. I hop and my car and light up. I have a 45 minute ride home and it gives me an opportunity to unwind, smoke a cigar (sometimes 2 if it's been a seriously rough day,) and just chill out before I get home. Last night, I was only about 5 minutes from work and this jerk was driving about 10 mph below the speed limit. Now, I consider myself a patient driver as long as you go the speed limit. Below the speed limit is unacceptable. Regardless, I thought perhaps it was an elderly fellow, so I puffed away and enjoyed the slow ride. Then, this guy stops to take a right turn. He literally stopped his car and start turning at a ridiculously slow speed. Now, he was getting dangerous, so I honked at him. Well, this jerk stopped his car, put it park, and started getting out of his car with his arms flailing. I couldn't believe my eyes. I know I'm above that b/s so I just drove around the guy and kept on my merry way. In the rearview mirror, I could see the guy cussin' and fussin' as he get back into his truck. I can't even remember what I was smokin'. I was so disgusted, I just threw it out the window.

What is wrong with some people in this world that they can't take criticism and be honked. That is all it was - constructive criticism telling this guy that he was doing something wrong. And what can you do it about? What would any of you have done? Would you jump out of your car and start a fist fight? Should I have threatened him with my double-blade guillotine? Is this a situation where I need to consider a firearm for the protection of me and my family if for some reason a road rage whacko comes after us?

stress is not inherent in the event, only how you percieve it. you started out a little annoyed by "this jerk" but you settled in to the slower drive and enjoying your cigar and that is good for you. your annoyance is gone and you are at peace. than "this jerk" does a completely stupid thing and you react. honk. you have escalated your annoyance to anger. you have allowed a stranger who has entered your life for a few moments, to change your emotions, adrenalin is secreted, blood preasure goes up, heart starts to beat faster all because of a percieved threat. your brain takes over and you leave the percieved threat, but you look in the rearview mirror to reinforce anger. days later the incident still lingers and you try to unload by telling us. perfectly fine idea. now let go. nothing to do about other people. you could think of "this jerk" as stupid, dangerous driver, or plain crazy. it's not important, he probably does not even remember you or all the others he has driven nuts. but until you turn his memory into one of those goofy little things that happen to you and all of us, you are holding anger. let it go and go in peace my friend.

Gonz, living in California, the mecca of "road rage", we do not wave, finger, or yell at anybody for fear they will pull out a 9mm and start shooting at you and anybody else in site! These days there are more looney tunes on the road than should be allowed! No, a gun in the car is just something that could cause problems. That fool was probably lost and got mad at you for no reason other than his stupidity and pent up anger! What a way to mess up a good cigar! Charlie

OK, I let it go, but just one last note. If he did come after me and bash my window in, would that be considered a hate crime? How do ya'll feel about the hate crime laws that are festering in this country. Isn't all crime based on anger and hatred?

It will only get worse before it gets better. You are correct, Gonz, that logical people realize that most crimes are indeed based on hatred of something or someone. But let that someone be some sort of minority, and it become a HATE Crime. Like that makes it worse. Didn't one of the parents of the kids killed in Columbine try to get a higher percentage of the moneys sent because his kid was black and that made the death worse than the others? I know I read that somewhere. He must have dropped it. Or maybe Jesse took care of him with a cushy job at Toyota....

I agree hate crime laws make no sense. I guess this is just the next step of affirmative action. Giving some citizens more importance than others. Isn't the liberal agenda great.

not all crimes are based on hate or anger. the guys that stuck a gun in me face to steal my car, did not hate me, they just wanted to steal my car. burglars
do not hate the people they rob. they probably like the fact that the people they are robbing have something worth stealing. the rapist does not hate the woman he is raping. he is doing it to show that he is strong and powerful. "a hate crime" is different than what you all have mentioned about all crimes being hate crimes. you are letting your prejudices show. "a hate crime" is a crime committed a person because of his or her color, ethnic background, or sexual preference. there is no attempt on the part of the criminal to profit by the crime. is is just an attempt to vent anger at a group by hurting one of the members of the group. there was a big "hate crime" commited in germany about 50 years ago. isn't it good to have laws against that sort of crime in our country?

So by this logic if you kill/hurt a "super citizen" the penalty should be less if you also rob them
since you are now profitting from the crime. Hey I'd rather be assaulted then assaulted and robbed. Not that either are appealling. But thats just me.

Hate crimes are just another way for the Gloria Alred's and Johnny Cochran's to fill their pockets with more gold and silver!

Rick, if someone murders my neighbor who is white, does that make it less heinous than if my neighbor was black? Laws against "Hate crimes" do just that. And the laws furthermore do not cover all Hatred. If a black man hates a white guy and kills him and his family, it is not considered a hate crime. Even if the murderer admits he killed them based on color. Despite a probable good intention, the hate crime laws do no more than serve as a politcally "correct" gesture while trying to legally define some lives more critical to the well being of society. It's a farce.
