Now I have never smoked a cigar older then 6 years so I am curious if these 20-30 year old cigars are smokeable or just collectors items. My thoughts are they are just collectibles but I could be wrong.

Oh this questions comes from another forum where I saw some very aged cigars for sale and got me to thinking what would attribute to someone holding onto a cigar for that long.

I saved 6 churchills from a bundle of Nicaraguans (had just started smoking cigars a month or so before and hadn't yet learned the finer points) I bought in 1993 when my son was born. One to be smoked by each of us on his 18th birthday, when he got married and upon the birth of his first child.

We each tried to smoke one on his 18th birthday. They were completely void of any taste. We ended up putting them out and IIRC smoked a pair of an aged Monte #2's. I pitched the rest of the "aged" smokes.

Maybe it was a good thing I didn't spend a lot of $$$ on them.

On the other hand, a few months ago I found a Partagas Sabroso (tubo) that had been in a box in the bottom of my closet for at least 15 years. One of the tasty cigars I ever smoked.

I've smoked several pre- revelation CCs that we're pretty strong and very good. They had a RyJ CC vibe about them. I knew that they had been keep in the proper conditions. I have a couple of 1970's & 1980's boxes of CC that still smoke very well. It all depends on how they were kept. If they have dried out then they will taste like paper. YMMV

Also, who the hell is Pete Johnson?

Buckwheat is correct.

I have many from mid-80 and 90s that smoke great. Some of the Bolivar and Partagas from that era are still stronger than those produced nowadays. Most Cubans changed their blends in the mid-90s to slightly milder for their customers preferences.

No $hit Pete a non Cuban cigar maker would say that. Ask JD and he says the same thing about cc's in general.

If a cigar is kept in a dry condition for too long a period of time the oils dry out and cause a loss of flavor making the cigar taste like dust. So the difference between a well kept 30 year old cigar and one that had dried out during it's 30 years of aging could be extreme. I can't imagine hanging on to a cigar for 30 years---to many things could go wrong.

My father kept a couple of boxes of Cubans...pre-embargo...he was born in Cuba...every New Years Eve he would smoke one.

You do the math on how long he kept them.

He always nubbed them down and had a look of pure bliss when he was smoking them. He was usually all by himself sitting outside thinking...I asked him one time what he was thinking about. He just said that he wished Castro had never taken control of the place what a paradise it would be.

Was humbled by a brother recently and had the chance to try a late-60's Cuban cigar that was extraordinary.....on the other hand, I had one yesterday that was rolled 15 months ago and it was even better.
