I hate them so I switched to lighter pipes, cobs, and bought forever stems for them......problem solved.

Yup.

The one I run the most is my lightest cob with a bent stem. Don't really matter if I chew it up, $5 and I get a new one

You have two possible solutions for your problem. You can buy a quality pipe such as Nording. "Quality" pipes are generally about $100 and up, although they sometimes go on sale for less. Or, you can buy several inexpensive pipes and just throw them away when you ruin the stem. There is also a third option--stop biting the stem. Think

I have them on all my pipes.

Makes them much more comfortable to hold in the teeth and protects them from bite marks.

And a lighter pipe with a rubber pipe tip is still more comfortable than a light pipe without.

Quality pipes have stems that are still able to be damaged by teeth. My Dunhill tanshell is a quality pipe by anyones standards, but has a vulcanite stem that is plenty soft. Pipe tip keeps it looking good.

It's a personal thing and many (including myself) do not like the feel of the rubber tips. I have never bitten through a stem on a briar pipe without using them, but I try not to bite down with much pressure, more with concern for the teeth than the stems. It's one of those things that the individual has to try out to find if they like it.

I think comfort takes the cake here. It's worth a try anyways. Thanks for the responses folks. Never heard of forever stems either so that could be option 2. I just can't see me sticking with only cobs. "Stop biting" that's what she said.

Pipe bits are definitely much more comfortable, and for a buck worth giving it a try.

No flattery really. Just a good time. I just enjoy rocking the boat a bit. This was my first look into researching on a tip. Didn't know they were only a buck. No loss there to try it. Just never know what else may happen is all.
