Was at a hole-in-the-wall B&M and they has a bunch of old red-banded Hoyo-de-monterrey-excalibur-epicure sticks on a clearance table at $3 per. The cellophane was yellow and crackly and since they were sitting outside the walk-in I was guessing probably dry. I've let them sit my humi for a while.

Really nice smoke! Complex with spices and tobacco and big nicotine kick. A bit salty at first then got quite strong then mellowed out St the end. Found one very brief review of these from 2010 but nothing else.

Anybody know about these? Not seeing anything for sale anywhere that looks like them. Here is a photo I found:

NC HdM still have their following. Used to like the Dark Sumatra's.
Believe the Red Label Excalibur may have been discontinued.
NC HdM are definitely not the same as the CC's Buy the CC's instead.

Never had the red banded ones, but I do enjoy the epicures, unfortunately their price point is too high unless I find them on sale.

Just from the look of these things I am guessing they were at least 10 years old, likely more. The cellophane was VERY yellow and crinkly. The B&M said every now and then they pull out cigars that have been in there a long time and haven't sold. The guy said those had been in one corner "forever."

I am guessing that the non-CC Hoyo brand has gone the way of several others (blends changed and made by others via General Cigar/Swedish Match) and the new sticks are not the same as the older ones. That's why I was interested in if anyone knows the Hoyo history with these. It looks like General took over Hoyo in 1997 but at what point did the brands/blend/quality change.? Right away or did they maintain the same production and quality for a while? These were much better than any recent Hoyo's I have been gifted or showed up in some random sampler deal I grabbed.

They also had out some equally yellow-cello Punch Upper-Cut that were also pretty good, very "meaty/savory" for $2 per.

Wow! Wish there was a B&M like that in my sector...

Mine sells old Cuban Delights for 3 bucks. Decent (not good) cigars 10 and up. I don't shop there.
