Why are all the pipes on this site
Bid up very high?
How much are Perterson, Savant, and the other staples on here @ retail prices?

All the pipes go for over $40- $80
Bucks on here...

I'm used to Dr. Graybow pipes hand made in North Carolina...
$18-$35 bucks new...

You could go to Pipes and Cigars (a CI company) and check out the prices. Some pipes have always been rather expensive and prices of everything seem to go up over time. I've smoked Dr. Grabs pipes, but no longer have any. They are OK for beginners, but I found much better for not too much more money. I have never bid on a pipe on cigarbid, but I have bid on and won some pipe tobacco.

I don't think they get overbid on here. Compared to the couple places where I buy from it is much cheaper on here to buy then at those places. Grrrrr gifted me a Dr Graybow pipe in my noob pipe trade, I like it but it was kind of plain jane looking so bought a couple more to try out that I thought looked cool, the prices on different makers goes up rather quickly.

BK from Township PA and a dude from Texas, can't remember his info always seem to be bidding on all the decent pipes. Not right now though, and the prices at this moment are ok. That Peterson Kilnarny is a good price.

Hey , thanks!!
For that "Pipes and Cigars" site info....
Many good pipes at very reasonable prices.

That is a very good site.
BUT,

Geez-0-man.... Some pipes were $300, $499, $799
down from MSRP's of $799-$1,299..
Unbelievable, I have bought very good used cars for
$1,500-$2,000....but never that much on a pipe!!!

A simple google search reveals a few other pipe oriented sites that are quite good with respect to price and selection.
Like Z said, good prices can be had here...........sometimes.

You smoke it.

Some of its preferences. Sometimes it's characteristics of the material, some like particular shapes, etc.

Cobs are a great starting point.

Try a generic briar.

I got a nice pipe here for $62.

BK seems to be focusing on lighters BTW. Fun to push him up a bid or two, but ya might end up with some lighters too. Just throw 'em in CBid 5ers or local trades....

And beware, pipe smoking can lead to the dual afflictions of pipe and pipe baccy acquisition disorder.

Pipes have always been a strong interest. Have always loved the smell on the few times i run across someone smoking one. I think the process itself has a strange appeal to me as well. An art to it in my mind

Buy em.

Not a fan of the "cheapos" but the nicer (still cheap) Missouri Meerschaum cobs are fantastic. The higher end cobs use a hardwood plug at the base of the bowl, the low end ones (with a sticker on the bottom) don't have this, and the pine wood shank serves as the base and eventually burns.

I wore out a few of the cheapos before I bought a couple "Country Gentleman" MM pipes and they've lasted years with the bit wearing out before anything else.

I have some absolutely gorgeous briar from my early days.It looks beautiful on the mantel............for smoking cobs cannot be beat.A good cob, love the Country Gentleman, and a forever stem will out perform any and all briar I possess.I will pick up an occasional briar..........but it's just based on how it's going to look on the mantel.

When talking of performance what does that mean?

I've got a MM cob with a small hole at 10 o'clock where the shank meets the bowl. Just enough that when I get near that part of the "pack" the pipe almost smokes itself.

Only problem I noticed tonight burning some fairly dry Balkan Luxury Blend 957 is it heats up from there on out, but burned to the bottom cleanly. Not sure it's worth the effort to fix it, or ditch the pipe. Slow PAD and only a few bowlfuls a month means this pipe only gets used once every two weeks or so.

Thoughts?

I've been smoking pipes for a long time now, went through a PAD and TAD phase, have had the chance to smoke all kinds of tobacco out of almost every type of pipe. A well made briar pipe, perfectly drilled and crafted with well aged root, can add a whole other dimension to your smoking experience. There are even olive wood and bog wood pipes that can change the experience noticeably.

But it only goes so far. I have seen beautifully crafted pipes out there made by very respected artisans who can achieve prices in the thousands for their work. To the well heeled collector this is probably fun but I can guarantee without reservation you will enjoy your tobacco every bit as much if not more in , as example, a Peterson, Boswell or Tinsky (can be found for under $200, some under $100 if you look harder) and, depending on the blend or type of tobacco even a good cob ( I swear that a good burley in a cob is one of the best ways to go).

Like everything there is a level for collectors then there are just good smoking pipes. You can spend as much or as little as you like and you are bound to have an identical experience, given well made pipes at either end of the spectrum.

Class dismissed! ;-)
