Every time I get an order big enough (or there is a special deal) for free shipping on the Mothership , I start looking around for things to try out or to have fun with.

This past month did a couple of free-shipping fun buys. Ordered a box (10 count) of Room 101 Uncle Lees for $49.99 that came with a "Knuckle Cutter" cigar cutter and a Room 101 ash tray. Promptly put the cutter and tray (neither of which I need) on ebay and (after shipping and ebay fees) sold them for a profit of $43. That's 10 pretty darn nice cigars for a net of $6.99.

Next, I grabbed a 10 count of Padilla La Terraza Connecticut for $19.99 but it came with a $20.00 CI gift card. Now I don't normally smoke Connecticuts, but I do like munching down on one while I am playing in poker tournaments. Helps me stay focused for some reason and gives me a bit of "personality" at the table. My requirements for this are: 1) mild cigar (don't want too much kick), 2) long filler (no chopped tobacco bits!) 3) One that I COULD light up and still enjoy, or at least tolerate, and 4) CHEAP (since I am not planning smoking the thing). I had used a batch of 5 Vegas Gold that I got free with a Humidor I had purchased as a gift, but they failed # 3. They were OK to chew on, but yuck if you lit them.

Never had these Padillas, but they look like they might fit the bill and -since I already know I will be ordering something, sometime, anyway from CI - they were free! Just have to have the discipline not to spend the gift card just because I have it, but wait until it's a purchase I would make anyway.

Given I am starting to stock up on things pending the FDA disaster, I am sure there will be no problem using the card AND finding more fun things to buy and try when nabbing the free shipping.

Now if we only had some special status for people here on Cbid that would give them free shipping and other privileges. Perhaps some shiny, metallic-themed category of members....

Oh yeah, since had free shipping also ordered one of those Drew Estate made Blendlabs that get snapped up here on Cbid like crazy. Check out the Review in the Blendlab thread....not good, not good at all...

Well the gift card didn't last long! CI having a pretty good deal on Punch Signature which I like (perhaps one of the best new "General" cigars I have had recently) and they are tossing in a 10 pack of Punch Rothchilds with the order.

Well the "free" Padillas turned out to be pretty darn good!

Couldn't resist firing one up at the pool yesterday just to see what it was like, and was very pleasantly surprised how flavorful it was. Mild but still a good tobacco taste. Tiny bit of salt, mild white-peppery spice at times. Never too sweet or grassy. Burned straight and never danger of going out even when was sitting by itself for a bit. If in the mood for something milder than your regular smoke, this is a good choice and, of course, was a great deal.

Any suggestions on ebay? Ordered the combo #451 not a great cigar selection, but comes with humidor which I figured I could sell and get my money if not more back.

I considered buying one of the sampler deals to get some yard-gars and then selling the "free" humi online, but apparently I was not the first to think of that - there are a TON of the exact same humis that are included in the CI samplers on ebay and it looks like they get 0 bids. The market is flooded! You might have better luck, but the sheer number of them out there kept me away from trying it,

I have one of those "free" humis at my office and also gave one away as a gift. They are not bad for what I used them for. Don't have any Cubans or Opus X's in mine, but two 69% Bovidas keeps my office sticks at about 67% with me rotating a new bovida in every now and then pulling out one getting a bit dry and recharging it in a ziplock, so I always have a fresh one ready. In my MUCH nicer humidor at home, it just takes one 69% Bovida to keep me at 65% and I almost never seem to have to change that one, always nice and squishy (except for the infamous tequila shot night, when I left the lid open - doh!!!). So you clearly get what you pay for on the humidors. Despite that, the glass-top one especially looks very nice and makes a pretty good gift or a good backup/office/overflow humi to have on hand so even if you try to sell the freebie on ebay and there are no takers, I still think its a good deal.

Oh the other hand, that Room 101 knuckle cutter went for a good price - with several bidders - no problem. The ashtray didn't bring a lot but still made money on it. So if you see a deal with the free cutter again, that looks to be a money maker.

Of course you have to not mind spending the time listing it, taking pictures then doing the shipping, etc., but I have a ringer on that! My wife makes and sells these grocery bag holder things on ebay to the tune of selling 50-60 of them a month, so I got a helper :)

If you do try to sell something, let it list for a week and make sure the "ending" time is the middle of the afternoon on Sunday, that gets you your best bidding action it seems

Well it looks like i unloaded my cutter and ashtray just in time, there are a bunch of them on ebay and not seeing any bids that came close to what I got for them. WAS a very nice cutter and ashtray though, would be great gifts.
