Cabinet Humidor Advice

I'm tired of me cooler. Its almost full, visually unappealing and a pain to dig to the bottom of due to an excellent game of cigar box tetris. I'm thinking about making the cabinet humidor plunge. I was considering doing a walk in closet one in my office but I won't be in this house for more than a few more years so seems like a waste. Need something I can take with me.

Could someone that knows what they talking about please take a look at these and lemme know what you think?

IMHO Best thing to do is go with what the cigar stores use commercially or even a few of the nicer ones you might find at a good liquor store. Your other option, if you're a craftsman would be to retrofit a china cabinet or other gallery style piece of furniture to suit your endeavor.

Looking at both of those I'm gonna tell you it's gonna be a pain to keep humidity.

Ideally I want something big where I can see everything and not forget what I have (although that's fun sometimes...)

I'm not much of a craftsman and really don't have time for another project in the near future. I would be willing to make minor mods to improve the seal on something already made.

How big of a pain is it to keep humidity in a cabinet? I assumed large active system + beads + boveda wouldn't be so bad but maybe I'm way off.

Boveda packs won't do you much good in a large cabinet unless you have a crate of them.

Not hard to keep humidity if you have a decent cabinet.

Those two, yeah, they will probably have issues for you. Those look like commercial units that were used for sales, where people were opening and closing them all day long, so the fact that they leak isn't important.

---
Looking at the more expensive one again... it might be an older higher end unit. You'd have to go see it in person, hard to tell from the photo.

Nick,

I have the Verona stand up style humidor and have had no complaints with it over the years, plenty of storage for singles and boxes alike. Got it here for just under $400 and a $175 delivery charge to my home. I use a Cigar Oasis electronic unit and a glass jar or two with HF beads.

Depends on where you live. If the ambient room temperature never reaches 70°, then there's no need for it.

If it were me, I'd go to a place with CHEAP humidors and get a new TOWER for under $800 shipped.

The sliding doors would be a pain in my opinion. I have two Towers of Power upstairs and love them. Also have a large wine cooler in the basement. All have been really good for storage.

They are all consistent. I use the refrigeration unit on the wine cooler to keep the temp at 64. Our basement gets rather warm in the winter with the heat running.

cigar box tetris... sounds awfully familiar. I am almost afraid to dig cause afterwards, I start panicking trying to put it back the way it was and it doesn't quite work out well. Once you are done, share the knowledge so i can entertain the idea. thank you.

Built this out of an old china cabinet awhile ago. Had about $250 into it. https://www.cigarbid.com...ject-is-done-and-cookin

Just last year took a old chest freezer and lined it with Spanish Cedar - it works amazing at holding humidity!!! (I don't keep it plugged in LOL) and have about $75 in 1/4 spanish cedar into it. Freezer was bought many years ago and stopped working.

It's all about setting up the cooler properly, using plastic trays, cigar boxes, etc.
I know I have OCD worse than most here, but it's nice to know exactly where EVERY cigar is in my cooler.
No "digging chaos", upsetting the delicate tetris balancing act, etc.

There's a certain way all the trays/boxes fit in my cooler, which currently holds 587 cigars.
I look at my spreadsheet to decide what I want to smoke. The spreadsheet tells me which tray it's in, and where the tray is.
I open the cooler, remove trays if required, grab my cigar, replace trays in their spot.....cooler is open for 15-20 seconds. Everything fits right back in its spot.

heh......
It's all good.....I know I have a mild case of OCD.

My wife's favorite way to fuq with me when I've managed to make her mad, is to threaten me with "cigar shuffling"................taking 20 or so cigars out of their present location and redistributing them randomly amongst my cooler and various humis.

Damn. I posted some crummy quality pics over xmas but I'm far from that organized. I've sorted everything out by brands. For brands that I only have onesie twosies of, I keep in a small desktop humidor. Then I've got a mooch box. My cooler has a base layer of boxes all tettrised in. I might be able to fit one or two more. I do not have a list of what boxes are in there nor what stack. Those boxes are topped with trays and then those trays topped with a bunch of finger bags full of overflow still by brand. There are for stacks layered that way.

maybe I should inventory them. I inventoried my whiskey once. It lasted about a month before it was grossly out of date and I haven't updated since....

Box Layer (can maybe fit a few more but need to be careful with the baggies on top)

I guess too many good cigars is a good problem to have.

maybe its time for a mini OPFTH drive....

Your ice box looks %1000 better than mine. my problem is, i just buy. I don't smoke nearly enough. and since bulk buying is saving, AND, with the boss... wifey threatening to burn them all if i buy more, i have to organize them in SHORT amount of time in DISCREET fashion. I am not sure when i lost track, but i have. And now it looks like i need prayers sent my way. and it's LIFO which is not what i want. i am almost considering paying for my wife and the kids to go on a weekend trip, and i just re do the f'er....

Do you need prayers sent your way? LOL

okay, i do have spread sheet and some extensive info. But i did not think of actually documenting locations of cigars within the humidor... i bought in bulk on cbid many times and i have to put them in humidor in a hurried discreet fashion at night and somewhere along the line, it went awry. i am somewhat OCD myself, but well... it's the FDA regulation panic stock up of 2016 August... F'ers.... i will get back into organizing better...

when you are buying secretly, and you have the below order from cbid, you just fit it in best way you know how...

Order Totals Pending Billed
Merchandise Total $0.00 $1,430.00
Shipping Total $0.00 $69.15
Sales Tax $0.00 $0.00
Order Total $0.00 $1,499.15

As someone who has been manufacturing custom humidors of all sizes for over 20 years, retrofitting existing cabinetry can be extremely difficult. First of all, you want to incorporate as much solid Spanish Cedar as possible into the interior in order to maximize the aging of the cigars. So many units these days use Spanish Cedar veneer which doesn't perform nearly as well as solid wood. Also, I have seen humidors with aromatic cedar and the same cedar used for siding and decks used for the interiors of the units. Actually, Spanish Cedar is a misnomer. It is, in fact, not a true cedar. Its properties are totally different and are not appropriate for humidor interiors.

Secondly, the unit must be sealed properly in order to retain the proper interior humidity level as evenly and consistently as possible. A properly sealed unit can, however, create other problems if the enclosure is not constructed correctly. The interior of the humidor in most cases has a much higher humidity level than the room that it is placed in. Wood swells with increases in humidity, creating an unbalanced situation between the interior and exterior of the humidor. I have seen humidors literally break apart due to the wood swelling from the high interior humidity as compared to the much lower exterior humidity where the unit is placed. A properly built humidor will take this into account and allow the interior wood to expand and contract without the exterior of the unit being compromised.

My solution: never have a wife or kids to begin with.

The result: buy whatever you want, hide bills from no one ever, and enjoy the blissful, peaceful silence and total, eternal lack of control-related whining, moaning, scowling, threatening, passive-aggressiveness, etc. etc.

Ahhhh... total permanent bliss! Herfing

(P.S.--- plus you save and build up metric crap-tons of extra money, in perpetuity)

I fell victim to the epidemic... 1 gina....
