An athlete on a Super Bowl winning team is now classified as a hero?

there are millions of kids who look up to these players, wear their jersey, have action toys and other swag. they emulate these guys....so, yes, they are heroes in millions of kids eyes.

I missed the outrage when Bruins goalie skipped out cuz he detested Obama. Meh.

that said, it saddens me to see being honored turned into political posturing.

also, DMV is correct. Yes, kids and adult kids as well latch onto these extraordinary performers, but parents need to teach perspective.

oddly, Charles Barkley said it best many years ago in a TV spot "I am not a role model"...which urged parents to be the role model.

+1.

Learn to think and be your own damned "hero". Until then...give our military ones the dignity and honor they deserve and give them the resources and leadership to come home safe.

And what a SAD....sad statement that is...d'oh!

They are NOT heroes....not by any stretch

Unless....say they're doing great things with a boys / girls club or generally doing good in their community etc.
now that would be more " heroic " than being a handsomely paid professional athlete. JMO

what a nasty trick! I don't really care about Julien, but to have hidden in the shadow of the Parade looks cowardly to me.

Tim Thomas was ABUSED by the local media when he refused to go.
Called a racist.
The Globe ripped him a new one.
Unpatriotic.
Self before team.
Etc.

This time around, the silence will be deafening.

WEEI and several local non sports conservative talk show hosts on other stations were far from abusive...

Personally, I was unmoved by Thomas' politics, would rather not know of his or Bennet's views, but I am saddened by both conservative and liberal athletes passing on a White House honor due to personal politics.

AL.com - Dont'a Hightower won't go to White House with Patriots, but not as a protest

"While making the rounds of ESPN programs on Wednesday, Hightower said his plans to skip the White House visit weren't made because of the president. He didn't make the White House trip after the Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX to cap the 2014 NFL season either."

"It's just that he's already been to the White House. Alabama made two trips to visit President Barack Obama after BCS national championships while Hightower was a member of the Crimson Tide."
