Pray Pray Pray

It's California, but a dam break is a real catastrophe, especially for anyone living on the flood plane below that dam.

Having been a dam operator for some time in California, I am really interested in what caused this leak and how it got so far out of hand. Years ago they had pretty stringent rules for inspection and maintenance. When a state goes broke, they tend to forget maintenance.

the dam isn't in any actual danger... the auxilary spillway is all messed up and the emergency spillway - which had never been used - basically disintegrated upon its first use...

The emergence spillway is unlined and would send mud and tree debris into the river channel. If the rain holds off, they should be able to handle the flow using the damaged spillway. Meanwhile, they are dropping rocks into the crater cause by the broken spillway and the local evacuation is ongoing.

If it's unlined, what's damaged on it? I swear, it took me about an hour of reading different news stories yesterday to realize the main and emergency spillways were 2 different structures, and i think a lot of news outlets were having the same problem....

A fishing group I'm in has several members from in and around the area and a few of them got some really good pics of the damage to the main spillway before this last storm came in... that hole is massive...

On the radio this a.m. they said it was designed to denigrate but it hadoes held out longer than expected.

Also read they've known about the damn for 12 years.

*shrug*

Can understand not worrying about that during a long draught.

My understanding is this; "emergency" spillways exist only to ease pressure on and protect the main structure of the dam. If it erodes and fails then the dam will survive. Unfortunately, for the folks downstream the results would be nearly the same as if the main structure were to fail. Prayers sent.

If that dam breaks it going to bring ruin and damnation upon them!

Better shoot up there and take all the dam pictures you want.
