I figure this has been asked before but since there seems to be so many noobs, I would give it a go.

Why do you smoke cigars? How did you get started smoking cigars?

I was going to list a bunch of possible reasons so you understood exactly why I was asking, but figure it would be better if people explain their answers without any suggestions.

Go!

Might as well do mine...

I started when my wife was out of the country. She was studying abroad in Costa Rica and I randomly decided to try a cigar. No good rhyme or reason.I think I got it at a local Mini Mart and it was a candela. It looked interesting and different than others, so I picked one up for my father and I. My dad and I don't enjoy many similar interests, so it was a nice hour or two spent with my dad. A couple months later I went to a bachelor party with some friends and decided to pick up some cigars to enjoy...it seemed natural and manly. ha. I went to a local shop I knew was around and asked the guy to pick out a bunch of cigars for me to equal $50. That was obviously a bad idea considering the cigars weren't very enjoyable and I have never even seen those brands again. Not sure what on earth they were. I slowly got in to the hobby after this.

I kept going and got further into the the "hobby" because it is one of things that help me relax the most and enjoy times with friends. Some of the best times I have had with friends were while enjoying cigars. Over time I began to enjoy them more and more and started to pick up the subtle nuances that are found in different cigars. Obviously this made me dive in deeper.

I may not be as knowledgeable as the guys on this board, but I am the go to for cigar advice in my friend group. I enjoy that.

When I was in the Sandbox in 05, I bought some Cuban cigars for my father. I ended up smoking them before I even left the AOR and was hooked. Back on the ship it was a great way to wind down from a long day on the fantail with some shipmates....If I wasn't hooked in theater, I was definitely hooked by the end of the following deployment.

My grandpa had a really cool sterling silver lighter. I restored it to working order and it happened to be during the the 1995 cigar boom. I dropped by a shpo, bought and smoked a Padron maduro...
I think you can see where it all went from there.

When i was 16 a friend and i stole some swishers because we didn't have cigarettes. A few months later he stole a box of his dads cigars, not sure what kind.

About 1year and a half ago my buddy broke a tuner knob on his banjo. I told him about an instrument shop next door to my workplace and ill see what they can do. The repairs guy said "why dont you just buy me a nice cigar and ill fix it". All i can say is things kinda snowballed.

I can remember back in the day wondering out loud "Why would anyone in their right mind pay a whole DOLLAR for a cigar?" That's how much the "good ones" cost at the time. But, like the perp in the Dirty Harry movie said "I gots ta know" so I took the plunge. The rest is history.

Smoked cheap cigars off and on for a few years and then on a backpacking fishing trip I was given a real hand rolled cigar by the campfire with friends and that was my epiphany.

I play golf often, two- three times a week sometimes. Over the years guys would give me smokes on the course.
I received a Monte classic once and it was soooo good, another guy gave me a Cuban that got me dizzy. After awhile
I'd buy my own at the pro shop, (way over priced, mostly crap). Then a strange thing started to happen, I'd get cravings for a cigar while driving, I drive a lot for work.
So I bought a Monte Cristo classic, this was 4 or 5 years after I had be given one, it was just as good as I remembered
the first one to be.
I decided to get a humi and buy in a little bulk and save, now I have a smoke every morning in the truck. I learned the hard way to crack a window, thought I was going puke all over my truck. Now my truck stinks like shlt when I get in.

I unsuccessfully started on 1998. Like others I wanted to do something that my Dad and I could do together (I was 28). It took until my 4 deployment before I got into them. Started off with some RyJ Cubans. It was a good restart and it stuck.

I actually smoked cigarettes for many years. It got so that I hated it but was addicted. Then I discovered premium cigars and smoking became a truly enjoyable experience once again
