Interesting. On one hand I understand the UK wanting to protect their citizens. On the other hand this would be a massive intrusion of privacy. I think for me privacy is more important.

You saying that privacy should be honored even on Social Media outlets?

I'm not sure I agree.
I think social media, by the very definition, is public information.

Although I'm not familiar with the app in question.

Whatsapp is a messenger app, not what you're thinking of in social media tail. You essentially set up group text messages... share media etc. But it's only shared in the group you define.
Similar to Google talk, or Facebook messenger.

Of course... the only reason tail even opened this thread was that there was "backdoor" in the title.

I consider FB Messenger as social media. Not as a secure transmission.

Clearly we all need a Cone of Silence when communicating with other people. Sarcasm

I didn't say it was a secure transmission. I was trying to point out that it isn't a public posting (like a Facebook status, or a super presidential official white house ...tweet...)

If someone needs a backdoor into it then there must be some security on whatsapp. I dunno. I've used it a bit when in Mexico. Or when large groups of us are coordinating.

I know what you're saying.
And I'm not saying that my opinion on this is a strong one.
I just think that there should never be a sense of true privacy when using a public app, unless that privacy is implied when signing up.
Phone calls. US postal delivery.
These things are implied to be private.

We use words like "backdoor" and it sounds like Big Brother or covert operations. But what we're talking about is hacking into Snapchat.

This isn't a loss of liberty or freedom. It's a reasonable outcome when terrorists utilize the latest fad.

I don't see how phone calls are more implied private than a message sent on any electronic medium.

Us postal delivery is implied private. It's codified in law (mail tampering laws etc)... but if you think a phone call is private (electronic data passed though a private companies infrastructure to another private person) then that pretty much applies to anything else.

Hell with VoIP phone calls and Facebook messenger might be going over the same lines.

seriously, when was the last time you got a busy signal?

it's like telling kids to "dial" a number, or "roll up" the car window...terms to which future students of language will attach asterisks.

I'm not certain, but I think that's sorta the crux of this one....not just implied..... whatsapp is used primarily because it offers secure communication
