Sitting on my deck, enjoying a cigar and reading about the arrest and resignation of our governor. I'm not going to make any sort of partisan statement - people are people, regardless of their personal views. Just when one gets out of prison (Democrat), another is arrested (Republican). Not exactly proud of my adopted state right now.

At least I didn't vote for either of them....

I heard a statement about politicians in general that stuck with me over the years. With absolute power comes absolute corruption.

I thought the Gov was just a sex fueled hypocrite minister. why'd he get arrested?

Other than his wife not maligning his mistress and him going on to be elected president, his story reminds us of a former governor of Arkansas ...

I could be wrong but never heard him referred to as a minister.

More fake news.

We had a former convicted mayor run for that same mayoral job after he got out of prison - and he was elected ! Now he's thinking about running for governor. And then there's our former Governor, who may be going back to prison again for another conviction : https://ctmirror.org/2016/06/17/appeal-denied-rowland-faces-a-return-to-prison/

Burner can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 3 of the last 4 governors have either gone to prison or, in Bentley's case, been arrested. It looks like he's struck a deal to stay out of jail.

Believe it was written of monarchs, but I don't know the complete context:

Lord Acton, expressed this opinion in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887:

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."

Former baptist deacon and a Sunday School teacher. What does this make; four Alabama governors resigned to date? And I thought Kentucky was FUBAR! fog

Depending on how one counts, it either is 3 of 4 or 3 of 5.

Bently (present) is getting what he deserves.

Siegelman (99-03) got what he deserved.

James (95-99) no problem with the law.

Folsom Jr (93-95) no problem that I recall.

Hunt (87-93) Baptist preacher, Amway salesman and should never have been governor but at the right place at the right time. State Dem party tried to rig the election by ignoring the voters and the party got the middle finger in the way of Guy Hunt. An yes, poor Guy ran amuck of the law.

Convicted politicians usually just get lightweight time in a Federal prison - easy time compared to what the general public gets.

Hunt (87-93) was the preacher.

Don't worry though, we have some waiting in the wings that will make the last couple look like saints.

one thing about me and you (might end up being more than one) is we have gotten along respectfully for years now while having political differences. Whiskey similarities, Cubans, even jokes...but we have political differences. And that's no problem for you and me. Others are unable to separate though.

I believe the reason for our civility is we don't do what the Gov of Alabama has done in life...i.e. preach morality (OK, not a professional "preacher" but bible thumping leader in his congregation) while living a life of deception.

I disagree with you fairly regularly, nothing yuuuge, but I see you as consistent in that your behavior mimics your words. I hope I am seen in the same light.

But right now we have a GOP hypocrite and it is just killing posters to admit what I keep pressing here...neither side owns morality. People can cloud the issue all they want, they can conjure up Bill Clinton as a diversion all they want, they can get the dogpile flock nodding in pius agreement all they want, but this is now, this is real, and he ain't the first nor last right winger to be getting his wick wet where it don't belong.

There will be more from all sides, it's what they do. But some fall in love due to similar political philosophies and believe against all reality that their guy is America's Sweetheart. Get real folks.

Righties and lefties are equally immoral. No side owns morality. Raise the exchange a notch above the self satisfying "we're better than you" level.

Burner, I used you here. Sorry.

Hypocrisy, lies, moral lapses, etc. are the province of both parties. Jackassery will not be contained by a D or an R.

But it's still better than [insert politician here] winning, because they're much worse than the [insert political party I support].

I must learn to accept what The Lovely Caren persists in reminding me...I am like uh idiot.

Why else would I find it aggravating to discover Bill Clinton, out of public office for nearly two decades, dragged into a sexually charged thread about a current office holding Phony-ass Hypocrite Religion Preaching Republican Governor?

Why should I expect folks to step up and take ownership of the people they tell me should make important decisions, preach to me about clean living (which I do better than their heroes) if they won't acknowledge the weaknesses of their role models?

I'll argue politics all day, and still buy ya a drink and a smoke...but you conservative majority here have to stop pretending you are Holier Than Thou.

You are about equal to the opposition. Deal with it and move on.

Maybe gridlock can end.

It's funny... there used to be a poster here who would try to make the explicit argument that republicans were more moral than democrats... (I'm paraphrasing)...
If I get time I'll try to search for his moronic posts...

I get that feeling alot...that's what has me ranting lately cuz despite my libardedness, I've been living a pretty morally correct existence, as have many of my libtard friends.

Arguing/debating differences of opinion can be exhilarating but when one side claims moral superiority, I just want to violate a major commandment!

Let's be honest, though, the right tends to (wrongly) claim moral superiority and the left (wrongly) tends to do the same with intellectual superiority.

well, this conservative for one does not see himself as particularly holy ... rather the opposite, actually ... nor, for that matter, do I know anyone named Holly ... and I don't give a hoot in hell about the Alabama governor and his problems ... let the Alabama voters make the call on that ...

BUT ... what I DO see as an issue in this case, is the political left and their shills in the press who're in full roar about this philandering governor and his use of public money and facilities in contrast with the arguments that they themselves presented when the shoe was on Bill Clintons foot ...

When it was Bill using the Arkansas Highway patrol to procure women for him, no one on the left OR their lackeys in the press gave a sh*t ... totally a non-starter ... then, when he was getting knobbers while sitting at his desk in the Oval, it was deemed private and no more than a personal issue between him and Hillary ... nothing for the public to see here ...

Now the libs, both in office and in the press, are carrying on as if a nuclear meltdown is imminent ...

In the end, Frank, I DO agree with you, though ... we really ought to move on and get over all the faux outrage here ....

to bring us up to the current news of a sexually deviant hypocritical gov, who happens to be GOP this time, I wiped out your deflection that happened decades ago, and am pleased to agree with you under the condition that you do not dilute the fact that a rightie also acts like a despicable pig by mentioning the behavior of anyone else. It stands alone.

i just wish you (and others) disparaged this guy on his own dubious merits. That is the point.

You and I however, are cool!

I agree, the Alabama gov is all that you say ... his behavior is not diluted by that of anyone else .. I AM disparaging him on his own merits ...

What I find bothersome is that the press and the leftist pols are NOT treating this guy the same as they did Bubba ... this guy is evil incarnate in their treatment, whereas Bubba who was also deviant and hypocritical gov and his equally appalling behavior was given a pass as being just a good ol' boy ... and it is typical Clinton deflection to say that "this happened decades ago" and is therefore old news that has nothing to do with todays reality ...

My sole argument is that they merit equal treatment, but that's not happening ... and that bothers me

Bill Clinton was arrested in the state capitol? Bill Clinton plead guilty to 2 misdemeanor counts of breaking the law while in office? Bill Clinton was in process of being impeached as Governor (using a proc as that had to be developed because of his actions). It sounds as if the people of Arkansas and their representatives didn't care enough about the abuse of power and if they don't care, well, as you said, I'll leave that to the state of Arkansas. And without an indictment, you think Billy should have gotten the same coverage as Mr. Burns?

As much as you want it to be the same, it's not.

While I don't think coverage is the same between left and right, I do think the difference isn't as large as the right seems to need it to be psychologically.

we have some common ground...
