Yeah Lukasowa is potato vodka, the majority of good Polish vodka is Potato based. I only do shots, vodka is like water.

In slavic countries there's also Slivovice which is distilled from plums and hruskovice from pears. You gotta be a man to be able to drink that stuff at room temp but it's got a little different vodka-type taste too. Hard to find good quality ones in the states.

I believe Chopin is Belvedere's potato cousin, but Lukasowa (so I was told by a native) is bottled on the other side of the same distillery.

Akin to:

"Do you have Prince Albert in a can?"

"Yes, we do."

"Well, you better let him out!"

Btw, whenever my wife makes G&Ts, she uses the "Entering Cape Cod" shot glass you sent a couple years ago. Cheers brother! Beer

Last night at a family dinner, 3 G&Ts made with:

Tanqueray Rangpur
Tanqueray No. TEN
Tanqueray London Dry

The Rangpur was easily the favorite, then No. TEN followed by LD

I napped for a bit afterwards and missed out on dessert. Wink

been drinking some Sobieski Vodka, sometimes on the rocks, sometimes with fever tree tonic.
not normally neat, but when I do I detect a slight sweetness. It isn't the worst neat either.

Ok after trying a dozen or so gins all mixed as g&t's...........it doesn't make a difference.I'll stick with Burnett's and Heaven Hill London Dry's for the coin.

As for vodkas the only difference I can find is in the rye blends..........I get a nice minty peppery flavor.Even in v&t's I get it.Sobieski has become a favorite while my everyday stuff is Burnett's and Heaven Hill.Think I'll go make me Vodka tonic

Whistle, we are absolutely on the same page. I've drank much more than my share of vodka, always on the rocks with a twist, and tried over 100. The ryes, particularly, Belvedere, are far and away my favorites. Sobieski is a great value, but has become difficult to find at my local ABC. Dripping Springs has too soft a taste for me - maybe mineral content in the source water? I prefer Tito's of the Texas vodkas. Grey Goose is laughably bad, even without taking the price into consideration.

I would suggest trying Stoli Elit (Mrs Monkey's favorite). I'm sure you've tried Ketel. Van Gogh is somewhat average. Russian Standards offerings tend to be good as well, but I can't buy it in Alabama. The Belvedere Unfiltered (black bottle) is very interesting, but not an every day sipper.

Found the Stoli Elit.........$50 something for either a 750ml or 1L can't recall. If I find it in a bar I may try it but not taking the full dive on this one

no need to overspend on vodka or gin if mixing, just like bourbons.

I happen to like Belvedere enough to sip it neat right out of the freezer, or with just a hint of vermouth in a martini, but for mixing and on the rocks, for short money Sobieski is pretty good, as is Lukasowa for potato vodka....Pinnacle, Three Olives, anything on sale, dump in tonic and ice, no problem.

I have similar feelings about gin, would rather use a gin with a little bite in a g&t, better than a smooth gin like Sapphire.
Smooth works better in a martini.

if available, Haymans Old Tom gin works in both. Old Tom style is sweeter than other styles of gin and smooth enough to drink on the rocks, very good in a g&t too. about $25 for a 750 here when it can be found...just say the word.

G&t"s and V&T's are great Summer cocktails.

Good advice

I think I have seen Old Tom........just can't recall where.

Having some Sobieski on the rocks with a twist now, good but I really like v&t's

Last day in Vegas I went on a gin a tonic kick, started off with Sapphire and moved on to Hendricks at the airport. Like both of them but the Hendricks did provide a slightly different taste which was a nice change because I was getting it in before the airport. Probably get a bottle of Hendricks at home now that I have tried it.

I used to alternate between Belvedere an dVox in da freezer, vodka that I preferred undiluted yet cold...but Vox seems to have disappeared in recent years.

I wouldn't cross state lines for it, no vodka is so incredible that I would, but I did like that Vox.

Frank, if you want an incredible Vodka try Hanger One Kaffir Lime. Certainly not for everyone and not a traditional Vodka by any means. It is distilled from wheat and Viognier grapes, and infused with Kaffir Lime. I don't know how many times distilled, but I would guess 3. Straight out of the freezer, undiluted it is very good. It does not use grape pomace, but rather whole grapes so it is not at all grappa or marc like.

have never had Hangar, have heard they make a few great ones (raspberry too), but I believe they began as part of St George distillery on the west coast. They make some highly regarded stuff, single malts, liquors etc., Hangar was sold off but still made by them.

You just gave me the push I needed.

In the Moscow Mule the ginger beer is of more significance than the vodka.Which Ginger Beer you dranking?I have access to Goslings, good stuff, and Stoli, haven't tried it yet they want $6 for a 4-pack........seems a little pricey to me.

Goslings. The Stoli is a bit spicier, but not worth the higher price point. Goslings is $6 a sick of 12 ounce cans.

funny in a way, cuz for a really inexpensive bourbon, I think it's pretty good....but the price does make one feel OK with using it to mix.

Pretty sure you were the first to tell me about it.

OK this is the right thread.

Barr Hill Tom Cat.

Gin aged in charred Oak barrels.

Friggin awesome.

Made a Stormy Cat. Essentially a Dark and Stormy but with the aged gin.

Good.
But might keep to just sippin'.

I think I had a .375 of that gin a few years ago. Is it really sweet, like sweet enough to drink on the rocks?
Wondering if it's named for Old Tom style gins which are sweet. If so, look for Haymans Old Tom Gin.
