Long long ago, roughly 25 years, I bought a pipe and decided to give it a try. No experience, no mentoring or direction. Hated it. But kept the pipe. Now that I've gotten into cigars, I thought I'd get it out and give it a try, this time with a little more knowledge. Found my pipe, it has the name Cambiati on it. I know I paid a decent amount for it, but that's about all I know. I ask one of the guys at the Cigar shop about something to try. He's been really good at Cigar suggestions so far. So I got some McClelland 27... not working for me. Anyone familiar with it? If anyone might like it, I'd be happy to send it to ya. Just let me know. I'd also be willing to take suggestions to try. Thanks.

You'll find here a selection of tobacco suggestestions as well as a link to the somewhat in-depth tutorial I wrote for beginner pipe smokers:

http://www.cigarbid.com/...652142/Pipes-and-Cigars

Easy first suggestion in case you don't feel like clicking through: McClelland Dominican Glory Maduro. Dry it well before smoking.

And if that No. 27 is still around, I'd be happy to snag it off you. Haven't had a chance to try the stuff yet! I seem to recall that it is a bright Virginia, which I find isn't always an excellent tobacco for cigar guys. May not be my style but I'm eager to try as many McClelland blends as I can. Their Virginias are very, very good.

Yeah, that's gonna end well.

Just go buy a new mailbox now.

But it is the best way to find pipe baccy that works for you.

Indeed. I'm still not done tasting all the extra samples that Jules sent me when we traded in August.

I feel like I need to try pipes again. I feel like all the tobacco I had in them were crap. I love the idea of smoking a pipe but just have had bad experiences thus far. Gonna have to find a decent cheap pipe and read through the above link for tobacco suggestions.

A loooooong time ago, I mean like 50 years, I was a pipe smoker. Favorite baccy was straight Turkish Latikia. Tasted great but smelled like chit.

BTW You'll need more than one pipe. One for each day of the week minimum so you can rest them between smokes.

Gonna have to find a decent cheap pipe ...

EXACTLY my situation some years ago ...
.
What I learned along the way is that drugstore pipe tobacco is like drugstore cigars ... crap ... and until you get a quality pipe with quality tobacco in it, all you're ever gonna have is bad experiences ...
.
By and large, there is no 'decent cheap pipe' ... quality comes at a price ... don't get me wrong, you don't have to spend big $$ ... there is an amazing "estate pipe" world out there where quality pipes are available at a relatively inexpensive price, but by and large, those pipes have been smoked by a previous owner ... there ARE unsmoked pipes out there, but they're vastly outnumbered ... you can become rather adept at restoration yourself and there are professional pipe restorers who'll do the job for you (at a price, of course) ...
.
There's quite a bit of trial and error involved, but with a little guidance from those of us who've gone through the process, a great deal of the 'error' can be avoided ...

BULLPUCKEY.........I have $200 pipes that rest on the mantel and just look pretty.I have over two dozen cobs, all under $10 that get smoked quite regularly.Once you grab a cob, slap in a Forever Stem.........briar is a thing of the past.Nothing in my humble opinion smokes better than a cob.

I probably wouldn't smoke it more than once a week, so I think one is plenty. Any resources that I can use to buy a decent pipe without breaking the bank?

Hi
If you are looking for a reasonable priced , great reputation, and easy to find pipe...try Peterson,Stanwell,Nording among others. One also has the option of looking at Estate pipes, where much more expensive options become more affordable.

As to tobacco, the first rhetorical question is would you buy a cigar from the local convenience store? I know sometimes these stores have small humidors but for the most part they do not. I used to smoke pipe aromatics (flavored called casing) ,however like my cigars I strongly prefer tobacco without casing. My preferences are English, Orientals and Virginia Tobacco's ( sometimes with perique) . I will smoke akso these types with a touch of Cavendish (Can qualify as aromatic but just a touch which does not take over) from time to time.
Often for those starting out, I recommend a few inexpensive blends like Stokkabye's Oriental Supreme and English Luxury(some Cavendish) and Virginia Woods by McClelland(another hybrid which appears to have a bit of flavor added) .
The English/Orientals have little to no bite. Virginians can bite if smoked semi-aggressively. One reason I initially promote Virginia Woods is because one gets the taste of a Virginian blend without as much of a bite(still be careful). There are many even better blends that I can recommend with more experience. However these are a few of the beginning tobaccos that should get one on their way (If you would like I can name more here as well. ); consider it an introduction though one can take issue...

Amen.

I keep trying my briars here and there, but they're no cob. Perfect smoking on every one I own. MMCG is my favorite

Used to smoke cobs, but I had a hickory pipe and it was even better. Haven't smoked a cob in years, but I still have a few around.

So I was at my local B&M checking on a couple cigars I requested. Tatiana Coffee Break series.
Stout paper bag cigar with a hint, and I do mean a hint off coffee. Btw. Not a fan.
But as I was checking out I seen they had a grab bin of different pipe tobaccos, I shuffled through them and found one that said chocolate. Since I was already getting something fruity I figured why not. I grabbed a cob too.
This was budget baccy. But it smelled really nice. Didn't taste to great though. My wife noted that whatever I was smoking out in the shop was her favorite cigar so far. Hmmm...

So my question is what are some heavy aromatics these days. A couple years ago. I tried a local black cavendish that was decent. I'm not a fan of latikia. I have a couple spectre cigars that I didn't care for.

Any info would be appreciated. Herfing

I don't smoke aeros....they always smell better than they taste and I don't smoke for others to enjoy the smell. Also, they tend to burn wet and they WILL ghost the pipe they're smoked in. So I hope it's a dedicated pipe or cheap that you're using.

So I have done some more research on Non Aromatics.

And some have a casing. Which make the tobacco smoke sweet? (Bear with me, these are more questions than statements.) a non aromatic that has a casingThink

Pandoras Box?

So if a smoke is sweet it doesn't necessarily mean it will have an aromatic room note that aromatics are commonly considered to have?

Ummm....

Maybe I should start over.

What's a good tasting pipe tobaccyHerfing

Thank you ZBeer

Alright Z.
After some research and most all tobacco I looked into was sold out this is what I ordered

Peter Stokkebye 402 Luxury Twist Flake
Dunhill Nightcap
Lane Limited 1-Q

I was also considering
Frog on the bayou.

Now my next purchase will be a briar pipe.
I think I ruined this cobs with that chocolate pudding budget blend.

I was considering a Dr. Grabow. That's what I had back in the day. When I thought I was Balling with my Captain Black.
Amazon has a decent looking pipe that is their top seller. Anyone have anything bad to say about either one. I'm all ears. Thanks GentsHerfing

I recommend (still) a good cob,Country Gentleman,a tin or three of some good virginia's or vapers. The Luxury Twist Flake mentioned above is an excellent choice.

Off the top of my head, actually here on my smoke table by my chair
Orlik Golden Sliced
Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls
Luxury Bullseye Flake
St James Flake
Luxury Navy Flake

The Orlik Golden Sliced and the Dunhill Navy rolls are both on my list to try. Both on back order as well.

I will be adding the others to my list.

That's funny you mentioned cobs. I just ordered an above mentioned MMCG, and The Devil Cutty Nosewarmer.

Next week will be the Forever Stem.

And eventually a Hickory. Which sounds delish. Say, I've got about a half a cord of split hickory out back. Same Hickory?Think

Forever stems being sold again? Last time I looked, the joint that Briarwork's sold the stuff to wasn't up and running.

Sounds like you have some good latakia stuff on the way, I'll check and see my navy roll stock. BTW Dunhill is quitting the pipe tobacco business.

On my way back from Atlanta today, found a cigar shop in Tuscaloosa.
This B&M was a Historical Home turned Cigar lounge. Two Story With a 60 ft covered porch. And a cigar lounge full of gassy fogs. Place smelt of stoogie farts. Owner was super friendly and helpful. Really nice feller, and an awesome facility. One of these days I'm gonna open up my own. We got nothin in my town.
I asked if he had any premium pipe tobacco. He did. A couple. Full line of Frog Morton, and 3 cans of Belle Vanilla.

Against my better judgement I reached for a tin of Frog Morton on the town.

I think I choosed right.

Now, the only experience I have ever had with Latikia was in a Spectre cigar that was gifted.
I didn't really care for the taste but did like the unique room note.

Well, I popped the tin right there at the register, and took in a big waft of smoky creamy goodness. So good I stuck it under the B&Ms nose before he could react he said the same thing I was thinking. Grilled Steak!!
Holy Moly this stuff smells amazing. like a sweet Latakia, or a Grilled Steak, with a maple syrup glaze. And a splash of Worcheshire Sauce.

I packed a bowl and hit the road.

The taste compliments the room note. Both being the same, the taste is very layered. You instantly taste the Smokeness of the Latikia, followed by an creamy aged tobacco flavor that finishes sweet. Which I'm guessing is the Virginia and Oriental coming through on the finish. There is a slight tartness before the sweetness.
No tongue bite at all. Comparing to my super value chocolate that is:p but I would dare say it is smoother than the Stanwell Vanilla I picked up in Meridian.
burned much cooler.

If you haven't tried this, it's worth checking out. It's as hyped up online as DE fans were when Drew released UCS.

Cheers matesHerfing

Funny you should ask. I stopped in at Riverside Alabama, down off 20, in the Coosa river. Boss Brothers BBq, is where it's at. You can hit them up via boat or auto. They have a dock.

Mainly cause I was in a rental, and I figured a slab of smoked ribs riding with me for a couple hours would be a good smoke screen for my cigar. Which worked, perfectly.
I'm sure after a while the stoogie farts shined through once the bbq left with me.

Another good way, my buddy showed me. When you pickup the rental. Complain that it smells like smoke. They will ask to put you in another car. Refuse and tell them to make note. I don't want to be charged for this.

Smoking in rentals.... Yeah, I'm that guy.

On another note it has been a busy weekend but I did have a chance to try a few good pipe tobaccos

-Peter Stokkebyes Bullseye flake. (I though luxury twist was better)
-Bobs Chocolate Flake. (Bought more for the name, to compare to my super value chocolate, the Latakia adds a nice touch. More of a shredded flake)
-Lane Q-1, (this was recommended for noob pipers. Not bad. But I thought, the next one was better).
-Mac Barren Vanilla Cream, (this was a vanilla on another level). Room note matches the taste. Very sweet and burned hot and wet. Needs drying. Better than Q-1
-CAO Moontrane. Meh...
-CAO Eileen's Dream. Alittle better... But meh...
-CAO Black. (What can I say, I got sucked into the CAO vortex sampler). Best by far. I dig the blackberry twist.

And the ones on my wish list
-Sutliff Molto Dulce
-Solani Aged Burley Flake
-Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired
-Cornell and Diehl Bijou
-Seattle Pipe Club. Plum Pudding special reserve
-A&C Peterson Escudo Navy Deluxe.

And more PS luxury twist flake.

If y'all know of any better blends, let me know.

The HH is pretty good and the Escudo is a crowd favorite among those of us who favor Perique ... WHICH C&D Bayou did you mean, Bayou Morning or Bayou Night ... they're VERY different from one another ... personally, I love the Morning, but not so much the Night ...

The rest? ... if I owned any of the rest, I'd give it to you ... individual taste and all that ... your mileage may vary ...

Oh, and BTW ... try some GLPease blends ... Greg has an absolutely magic touch

Well. A couple... NightCap being my prized jewel. I haven't open it yet for the simple fact that I ran out of mason jars, that the wife hasn't laid claim on.

Do y'all recommend a Balkin Blend?

Digging around on my B&M's pipe tobacco shelf, through the cobwebs I see something pushed to the back.

A tin of House of Windsor Model. Circa 2007. 8.99 marked down to 3.99.
Oh well. It did give me a chance to talk to owner, about his lack of stock. He took down my list and is looking into carrying more variety. Typical outlet. But in his defense he does have a nice selection of Missouri Mershaum cobs.
And a humidor you can walk into!!!

Any recommendation on a straight black cavendish?

Also any recommendations for A hickory pipe?

Thanks all

broke out my country gentleman after a very long break... had a jar of hh lj heart burley sitting in a closet for a few years... it's smoking nice, but when I went to pipesandcigars to order another can. no mas... just the virginia...

and I don't know enough about pipe tobacco to know what I should smoke instead...

I know virginia's can be a bit too sweet for me and I can handle almost exactly no latakia... any recommends?

also, anyone know a reliable site to pick up a tin of Bill Bailey's Birthday Blend?
