Ok... first post so I am sure I am going to get a lot of crap about being a noob and whatever else but whatever....

I got a Gurkha sampler the other day and I am just wondering what others experiences have been with these sticks. I tried the Beauty first.... and I feel I could have wrapped hay in a paper towel and achieved the same result.... I tried the Centurian last night and while better.... it just wasn't good and tunneled like crazy.

I get that it could just be me.. but just looking for some of your opinions and experiences.

Sipping tea

Settle in, the "NooB Trying a Gurkha" posts are about to come rolling in.

Don't be offended most of us have been there. Head over to the N00b threads and start trading to try other cigars at various price points that actually have flavor. Some Gurkhas are ok imho for yard gars or other mindless smoking but there are other $1-2 cigars better for that too.

I never did, I read a lot before I bought anything so I could avoid trash.

To this day, I can proudly say that I have never smoked a gurk.

Ha.. sorry I was hoping to not start that. I truly got these just to try and have just been a little more than shocked at how bad they seem to me to be. I wasn't even really looking for a "cheap" stick, just something different and.... well it seems obvious already that its not just me being weird.

I get a lot of sticks from my local BM in the $10 to $15 range and have never really not at least enjoyed them. But these with there normal price range and for a company with such a big name I guess I was just thinking something was wrong me or something for not liking them

Nope, they're trash.

$10 to $15, lot of excellent "cigars" in that price range (scrubs at puff use the word "sticks").

I don't recall now what it was called, but about a dozen years ago, I bought a Gurkha variant that smoked pretty well ... not the best cigar experience of my life, but one that was worth the money it cost and a decent smoke ...

Then, Gurkha recognized their mistake and corrected things ... that particular cigar either was dropped from the line or was re-blended in order not to embarrass the others of their lineup ...

Advice: Never buy a Gurkha.

With whatever you have left, they may make good kindling.

You would have to pay me to smoke another one of those dog rockets. Makes me laugh really hard every time someone says they like Gurkhas. I have a buddy that swears by them, but then again he likes country music too, so....

Welcome to the site, btw.

Gurkha, like a lot of other brands, create a lot of different cigar lines, hoping something will catch on. Rocky Patel, EP Carillo, 5 Vegas, and others all seem to play the same game. Don't get me wrong... there are GREAT RP cigars... and then there are lines like CARGO that are best stayed far, far away from.

You got to do some research. Read some reviews. Chat with some cigar guys. Buy some singles. Buy some samplers where you get 1 or 2 of each cigar. Visit your local cigar store. Then be selective about what you purchase.

Remember as well, most cigars arrive somewhat DRY from shipping. You need to let them sit in a humidor for several weeks before you smoke them. My first shipment of Gurkha Park Avenues arrived from CB/CI and I tried one right away (being a novice) and I was convinced I had made a terrible mistake. After two months in the humidor, they became on of my favorite morning on the porch, cup of joe in hand smokes (because they are very light tasting, and cheap enough that if I throw half of it away due to time I don't get the guilt pangs associated with ruining a more expensive smoke.

Cigars do not arrive DRY.....Most places keep them at 70% which is too high.

I have been buying from Cigar Bid for 3 years. I would estimate that almost 50% of my orders arrive dead ass dry.

But I said you're an aficionado... That's quite the complement.

They come wet, if yours comes dry, it sounds like a personal problem... pew pew poof.

You're probably ordering the rockets they store out back in the shed.

Glad to say I have never bought a Gurkha. Nor a sampler for that matter. If I wanted a craptastic cigar I'd buy some Keep Moving Goodies.

Yes, I know, I'm working on it. Online it's hard, in person it comes out with a smile and a laugh :)

I do catch evil glares from my wife quite often though.

I think everybody really needs to experiment with their relative humidity based upon location/environment.
You just can't make a blanket statement that one particular value is perfect.
Some smokes are fine at 70%. Others do better lower.
Are you living in the desert or the tropics?? ..it all makes a difference IMO.
Not sure if it'll make any difference with a Gurkha. Ha!

ALSO...noobs need to get a good digital hygrometer and use it to check the smokes they receive in the mail from each different vendor.
You simply place the smokes in a ziplock along with the hygrometer for 24hrs. to check how they arrive. SOME come wet, SOME dry!
Regardless, that's exactly why you should let them acclimate in your humidor before smoking.

Yes a shocking waste of money! The quorum I tried the other day on a bet was amazing compared to these so far.

Never smoked a Gurka but I will try the Special Ops if I run across them and I do have some Titans resting in my Humi. Biggest problem with Gurka I've been told is that you find one you kind of enjoy and the blend gets changed so I usually stay away from them.

Some of the Gurkhas that I have smoked have been "tolerable". I have either been gifted them or won them in a bet. I am a glutton for punishment so I try the cigar out before I ban it from the humidor. I can't say that I have smoked more than on per Gurkha line (of which, there are many). Move on to other cigars. Look through the "What are you smoking" thread and see if there are multiples of particular cigars. If so, then they are probably a decent cigar....unless it is the same crappy cigar loving lunatic.

I agree on the humidity thing. I took cigars with me to Arizona and they all blew up. For that climate, they were too dry to start. In Oklahoma, they burn perfect. No cigar explosions at all. I must have had 4 cigar come completely apart while I was there.

I am still giving them a fair shake. I had the Warlord last night... sigh. tons of smoke off the foot but had to double puff to really get anything from it. (go ahead with the jokes BGZ!!! LOL) No real flavor at all until the last third. Then it was more of just a super light coffee and tobacco but that quickly went to more of a stale taste.

I try lots of different cigars all the time and am always looking for something new. My go to cigars are usually Camacho Corojo or Barrel Aged and maybe a Man o War now and then.

I completely agree with humidity levels. I am up in the mountains of Colorado where the humidity yesterday was a solid 10%... I have a cigar oasis in my humidor that I have set at 68%. They seem to perform well at that level. There is a store here that sells cigars and they keep theirs at 74%! You have to relight about every 5 minutes. I try to talk to them but then they tell me they dont even smoke so its like talking to a tree. I own a store myself and just got a 300 count humidor that I am seasoning now so I can sell people actually properly stored cigars and can give advice and feedback.

Sticks can be found in the woods, in your yard...you won't find them at a Cigar store or on CigarBid.com.

Maybe check StickBid.com

You can't alter reality by decree. You can deny and complain and be smugly elitist all you like, but what I said above remains true, the word "stick" is indeed widely used by many long-time and serious cigar people.

There's really nothing else to say, so go ahead and call me whatever names you like, that's fine. Instead of wasting time repeating what I just said endlessly, I'm going to stop replying here and instead go browse the wide selection of nice sticks on CigarBid!

I call them what I want. I sometimes try to stay trendy on some things. If folks here don't want sticks then fine by me. As long as they don't insist on wedge cutters I'm good. Those make cigars look phallic as hell to me... (that's weiner like for you kiddos)

There isn't one person on this site worth their weight that would use the term "sticks" to describe a cigar.

Change the vernacular to meet reality!

Only idiots and bums would call them a "stick". You are NOT on StickBid.com are you? This site sells cigars and cigar related merchandise. When you open up a CIGAR Aficionado magazine they do NOT describe them as "sticks" and the title of the magazine surely doesn't either. You can carry on your merry ignorant way but you have been educated to NOT use the term to describe a cigar...ever.
