The Supreme Court’s term ends next week with growing speculation that Justice Anthony Kennedy--the panel’s most pivotal member--may retire at age 80 after 29 years on the court.

Action is expected on President Trump’s travel ban before the court’s long summer break but the biggest news of all would be if Kennedy were to use the court’s last public session on Monday to announce his retirement, the Associated Press reported Saturday.

Kennedy has played an important role as the court’s swing vote on many important rulings. His departure would allow conservatives to wrest near total control of the bench for the foreseeable future.

The justice has sided with his liberal colleagues on gay rights and abortion rights, as well as some cases involving race, the death penalty and the rights of people detained without charges at the Guantanamo Bay naval base. He has written all the court's major gay-rights decisions, including the 2015 ruling that declared same-sex marriage is a constitutional right nationwide

It's to bad the supreme court justices are liberal or conservative. Their rulings should be constitutionally based.

Z, it also minimizes one of our checks and balances that our forefathers wisely built into our government.

Not my point Robert, the constant 5-4 is exactly what many Americans see wrong with what SCOTUS has become.

When you're too busy trying to "interpret" law instead of upholding it...well, you're not going to get that are you?

The Citizen's United case is proof that conservative Supreme Court justices also like to rewrite the Constitution...it all depends on your perspective...it's a re-write if you don't agree with the decision...if you do agree with the decision, it is "an interpretation of the Constitution" to fit modern day realities which our forefathers did not foresee...

They never in a million years thought that there would be Americans working against Americans with greed as a motivating factor. The men that wrote the documents that forged our nation spoke multiple languages and were learned men. What they laid down as a framework is monumental and a real testament towards forward thinking. They also understood that there should be clauses as time and issues change. They weren't perfect men, but they did outline a perfect system.

If a law is a law then it should be upheld. If not then a new law should be written. Upholding legislation because it's a tax when it's not labeled as one is not correct, yet that is exactly how ObamaCare got passed. Rammed down our throats by parliamentary procedure games and funded with backroom deals, tax breaks and passed as a tax. How many Americans want MORE taxes? I know not one. I'm for paying my fair share and do, however there are certain people and corporations that do not. It is not my burden to make up the difference.

could be semantics, but a hundred years ago what I was taught was that Congress makes laws, police uphold laws, and the supreme court interprets laws.
