A little background:

I am a 46 year old man that recently had a stroke in November. Due to this I have some things that just do not function as they use to. Example: I can not keep up with time. When I think I have only been awake for an hour or two my wife informs me I have been up for 24 to 28 hours. Also, spatial issues such as if I get a block away from my home I do not know which way to get back to the house. The minor issues partial blindness and stability issues. Blahh blahh so on and so forth. I am very much a noob when it comes to cigars.

I started smoking them back when I was given an Acid back in 1990's and it was just a here and there thing until now. Since my stroke I want to try and enjoy what I have left and partake in some of the finer things. Over the past month or so I seem to have acquired a taste for a natural type cigar. I like both mild to full, Connecticut and maduro ect and so on. What I do not know is what is a good cigar vs say a Gurkah. Now other than that here is where I would love to know if I have lost my marbles.

My Problem:

When it comes to being a noob to the cigar world and trying to pry information from people for advice and such, I tend to get the typical "Research", "Watch Reviews" ect... and here is where I think I have lost it.

Most research where I read reviews its just the same ole as the video reviews and that is where I get lost. In the videos I see some schmuck talking and they say "Stick this and Stick that" I am trying to figure out WTF is a stick. Is this like when the younger folks say " I cant adult today" and I am wanting to reply " Of course you can not but you are childing very well."

Then the videos go on to show the same schmuck taking a puff then smacking his lips around, you can hear his\her tongue flapping all on the roof of his\her mouth with the sounds of slobber flying like something from a porn gag film. I question if these people never heard of MISOPHONIA to the 10th power. I want to kill in a major way. Then they follow the slobber all over their chin maneuver with the follow up of "I taste...... Lilac, and Cream like at Starbucks and" (insert more lip smacking and slobber technique) "and something I just cant place... Oh its Rose Petal but no no wait....(more slobber and lip smacking) "Oh Oh I got it... On the rose there was a lady bug that took a big dump on the petal at high noon on Tuesday in 1974" WTFFFFFFFFFFFF...

.Now here is where I really think I have lost my mind. I have tried these Lilac and cream cigars that they are refering to that have rose notes with lady bug crap hints in them and I just don't taste it. I taste TOBACCO. Granted some are more spicy and peppery, I even get the leather kind of taste, the woodsy and even the dusty hay kind of kick or earthy kind of soil but that is about it unless I am smoking a cigar that has some kind of potpourri all over it (like acid) or something that has been infused with fake bathroom Drakar.....

I am asking you folks out there.... Have I lost My MIND???? Did my stroke blow up my taste buds??? Please help console me or let me know I am on the right path. Guidance is needed.Point me in the right direction please. If you would like to make any suggestions on what to try I am open to any. If you could tell me where to get good information for research or video reviews that don't have all the "I am trying to be an aristocrat" BS that would be great as well. Last but not least, If I have posted this in the wrong place let me know and I will delete it and move it to the proper place.

Thanks in advance

The pissed off, stroked out Ewok.....Brick wall

lmfao, this guy is awesome.

Don't worry man, I don't taste ladybug fecal matter from 1974, nor do I taste Monica's vaginal fluids from 1992 either.

Ewok, you're a grown áss man not some 30-something hipster ásshat trying to get into a hobby. Kudos to you man much respect.

You can only get some notes that some of those people describe with deink pairings. I know I only get graham cracker flavors with a coke.

But yeah, smoking dry or with water only you'll get tobacco, leather, spice, wood, and cream flavors. Sometimes a generic fruit flavor or generic floral notes will come up but it's indistinguishable.

If someone ever tells you to your face that they're getting notes of lilac and starfruit with a hint of princess kisses, please deck them for being a schmuck.

Cheers!

Your palate is probably still messed up from the stroke anyway so just concentrate on finding a couple of cigars you really like. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks, spend your money on 5 packs and singles, try a lot of cigars and take notes. Burners trying to identify flavors will "chew" the smoke of a cigar, its not necessary if all you want to do is find a cigar you enjoy smoking. Eventually you'll learn to appreciate more complex blends.

I do appreciate it. I have noticed that with some mild pepper in some cigars, If I should drink a Dr Pepper it tends to bring out more of the pepper in the cigar for me. Which I do love pepper (white pepper) was my salt replacement back when I had my open heart surgery and I came to love it. I will admit when I heard folks saying things like Lilac and starfruit I did want to dragon kick them in the neck, but it was because I would get frustrated because I could not taste these things in the cigar they recommended. On the other hand it gave me a list of cigars to try so cant complain there.

Frank

Hi Frank, well as a neurophysiologist my career started after I graduated college with and AS degree in applied science specializing in electroneurodiagnostics. I got my registry as an EEG technologist. The first 4 years I was doing electroencephalograms on seizure patients first for diagnosis. Later I was doing EEG's for focalizing seizure activity on the brain for patients that have intractable seizures to see if they was a candidate for brain surgery since medications did not work.

Later I was lucky enough to start doing intraoperative monitoring during brain and spine surgeries and also thyroid and parotid removals also, tympanoplasty's and even things such as carpal tunnel surgeries. Basically my job would consist of monitoring motor and sensory nerves during these surgeries to prevent damage to the nerves in the area being operated on, or spinal cord and also brain mapping for brain surgeries. So for example if having a thyroid removed 2 nerves one must be aware of is the left and right vocalis nerve, Cut or stretch one of those and that side of the vocal cord is paralyzed. While the surgeon is performing the procedure and get to close to the nerve we was the ones to notify him/her so as to prevent him from cutting or damaging that nerve. Also we would stimulate the nerve so the surgeon could trace it out for dissection removing only the thyroid.

Now to answer your fist question "why are you talking about the time you have left?" Honestly I feel my time is short. In the past 4 years I have had open heart surgery with a triple bypass, an aortic valve replacement with a mechanical valve, and as of last November a stroke that took place in my right posterior cerebral artery, thus taking out my right occipital lobe part of my temporal lobe roughly an area the size of a full grown mans fist. basically from mid way back on the right side. Granted I know I might be wrong but I tend to look at the writing on the wall.

First off my health issues then top with genetics. My father passed away when he was 42 years of age, My mother has cancer, heart issues ect and so on. Keeping in mind I was born when my parents was 15 years of age and I am 46. Bottom line the winning bet is not on me lol. Also with my medical background well lets just say I have seen it all when it comes to this sort of thing and they say knowledge is power, well honestly I would now love to be ignorant. When my stroke took place I knew exactly what was going on and it well scared the **** out of me. I have been afraid ever since every day. Any how sorry for the long novel lol I hope that answers your questions and feel free to ask me anything I will answer the best I can. Herfing

Ewok...welcome to the asylum.

You're not an idiot, nor have you gone Full Retard. That is reserved, as you pointed out in your eloquent 1st post. That verbiage, vernacular and drooling antics are for those that haven't evolved yet. The pond scum that hasn't developed into an intelligent being.

It's tough having to slog through posts that mouth breathers type up. Always crying, moaning, desiring attention or wanting something from anyone. The very bottom tier is reserved for those that take advantage of the generosity of being a true BOTL. A Brother of the Leaf is an exclusive club.

With great anticipation at what you care to share here, I say Welcome. Post away. You have found us.

Welcome Ewok. Never give up no matter what the doctors tell you!

As the flavors... I agree that 99.9% of them are just asshats trying to sound cool to their yuppy trust fund buddies. I watch reviews. Lots of them especially when thinking of trying a new cigar. There is only one guy that I typically "trust" but even he at times says some crazy crap. Just the other day he referred to the smell of a wrapper of manure..... Yes barnyard manure... and then went on to smoke it and say it wasn't bad. The point there is to take every review with a grain of salt because everyone is going to taste something different

Athought there may not be much help for making Gurks good in my opinion.. But your the one smoking it and if you like it, then to hell with what anyone else thinks.

Welcome to douche-land, enjoy your time here.

Don't listen to anyone here, buy all the Gurkha's you can get your hands on and enjoy the heck out of them. Keep up with the Acids too, while you are at it.

In regards to what people taste in a cigar...if they want to say they taste something unusual, more power to them. Nobody is impressed, although I do enjoy discussing flavor profiles with my buddies. Some of the things I taste frequently in cigars are: different spices/peppers (black pepper, cayenne pepper, etc), different nuts (almond, cashew, walnut, etc), leather, earthy/dirt flavor, green/grassy flavor, sweetness in different forms, creaminess in different forms (butter), different woods (oak, pine, etc), sometimes some hints of fruits or flowers, bread/toast, cocoa/chocolate and coffee/espresso.

My personal favorites are maduros and anything that has a strong spice to it. Most of my favorite cigars have been very spicy tasting.

DrMaddVibe, I thank you sir for the "welcome". I have had to "slog" through many a post as such and tough is putting it mildly BigGrinSo much so that I have even went as far as insulting their family and genetics... But my wife will freely admit I can be an **** lol... As far as BOTL, what I love the most is the comradery. It is very much an exclusive club but in all honestly it consist of the best men and women I have ever met in my daily life. Other than my wife... I had to throw that in just in case she sees this...I like having a roof over my head and a bed to lay in lol....

Hi Buckwheat, lol I will say that I go full retard sometimes, as far as DMV lol I have not been around long enough to throw my dogs in that fight hahaha. I will agree life is way to short as I have experienced as stated in my previous post. When one is not paying attention that is when life will put boot to ass and I am still digging out the boot laces. Now as far as the "legible" sentences go give me time I will screw that up at some point I am sure. Thank you for the welcome, I greatly appreciate it.

Hi Mr Jones,

Yes that was my first post other than a few to where I was answering some of the questions like "what was my worst cigar" and things of that nature. I do appreciate the empathy and yes I will have to be honest and say it is extremely rough now but I am also very great-full to be alive. As they say "Bad things happen to good people every day". I guess it was just my turn and such as life. I appreciate the list as I will be adding these to my"To try list" I typically only smoke 1 to 2 cigars a day. Last one is about 30 minutes before bedtime because honestly it relaxes me and also it helps to slow my brain down due to I am focusing on the cigar at hand. Now, you must go easy on the guys who wear pink shirts. I wear pink shirts as well. Mainly because my wife says I look good in them and also because she carries my balls in her purse.Anxious

Hi Thurson,

I thank you for the "welcome" It is great to be here. I would agree it does not matter what others think but being an academic I do love to look, listen and learn from others that have more experience. Granted not all are correct, or have the same taste but until I learn my "pallet" as they say, getting from others what they think can save me allot of money and butt hurt... But then again now that I think about it that could also cost me a lot of money and butt hurt as well uhh? Yes I was the idiot that held on to the spark plug on the lawn mower while another guy pulled the cord because he asked me to. Thanks Dad......

I do try to keep pushing on even though the Docs say no change expected. My life is what it is and I am great-full to still have it.

Now If my cigar smells like DODO, we going back to the shop to raise a little hell. LOL

I do hope I have replied to everyone. If not I do apologize. I just want to say thank you all for the responses and for any responses to come. I am very glad that I found this community and hope to learn from you all. Now to go spend my children's inheritance and bid on some of those cigars listed from the posts above. I think I am going to need another humidor.

While standing in Victoria Secrets with my wife and she says "Hey hold my purse while I try on a few different panties. While standing there I got to thinking. Is there a cigar that gives the subtle notes of WD-40 with hints of Duck Tape mixed with the taste of burning rubber off of a drag car, Because I need something to make me feel like I got my balls back.Anxious Blink Confused Huh Unsure

Ok just to clarify, When you say barnyard are you meaning like the taste or smell you get when you walk into an old musty barn that has been standing for years unused. Or are you talking about the smell of pig sh1t and chicken squirts topped off with dried field muffins that all the cows have left in the field?
