You can call this tilapia the one that got away.

A viral video surfaced Thursday that showed an unusual face-off between two fishermen and a family from an animal rights organization comparing a "suffocating" tilapia with a human child.

Bob Hope was fishing with his family at Crescent Lake Park, which is north of St. Petersburg, The Tampa Bay Times reported.

The video was shot by the animal rights activists and it begins with the group walking over to two fishermen who have just caught a tilapia.

The fish was flapping around on the cement and one of the men was putting a fresh peice of bait on a hook.

A boy, 9, walks up from behind and asked, “Do you know fish feel pain?”

The men look at the boy and don’t respond. The boy continues, “When you hook them in the mouth, it really hurts them.”

At that point, one of the fishermen bites and says, "OK."

The boy asked them to consider that fact and pack up their poles.

Mike Leaming, who was identified in The Times as the boy's father, asks the men, “Are you really going to let this fish die like this? What if this was a dog and I hooked it in the mouth and threw it into the water?”

“We don’t eat dogs,” Hope said.

Leaming said all animals have the ability to love and feel pain, therefore they should be left alone. The fishermen appeared to be gracious and told Leaming, “We respect your opinion.”

Leaming, who was joined by his wife and two children, continued to press the men on the fish. He asked them if they’d react the same way if it were a “human child.”

One of the men responded, “This isn’t a human child.”

“They have the same ability and emotions of a human child,” Leaming said.

The fishermen appeared to grow tired of the questions and told Leaming that he was harassing them. Leaming said he was on public property and rebutted: “You’re harassing this fish!”

The conversation continued and hit its crescendo when Leaming took the fish-- appeared to have some fight left in it-- and hurled it back into the lake. The fishermen told Leaming that they were calling the police. Leaming fired back, “Call the police! I just saved a fish’s life, how about that? How about that?”

The Times reported that Hope called the St. Petersburg police but the group was gone by time officers arrived. It didn’t matter anyway because the police said they could not make an arrest.

A second degree misdemeanor can only be enforced if an officer witnessed the crime, the report said. There's video, but swiping a tilapia does not rise to the crime level, the paper reported.

The group is reportedly called Direct Action Everywhere. The report said activists from the group swept through Pinellas County this week and caused an earlier scene at a Chick-fil-A.

Hope told the paper that he was going to eat the fish and that tilapia

"I only shared it on social media because the police officers did nothing to protect my rights," Hope said. "If there were people fishing all over the lake, and these people showed up, that's a protest. We were fishing by ourselves when we were ambushed. That's not a protest, that's harassment."

This Is Why You Should Never Eat Tilapia

Tilapia has become the ubiquitous fish in America today. It's cheap, not “fishy” tasting, boneless and skinless, and is hard to mess up by overcooking, which is a problem with many other fish varieties. However, the tilapia we're eating is almost entirely a farmed fish, meaning you cannot find wild tilapia in any grocery store or on any restaurant menu.

And the farming is usually done on an industrial scale, with thousands of fish being harvested every day. Their feed is not natural — in the wild, tilapia would eat algae and lake plants, but the farms fatten up the fish on GMO corn and soy pellets. The amount of healthful fish oils in these creatures is almost non-existent, negating the main reason why fish is so good for us.

Why Farm-Raised Tilapia is So Bad for You

1. Recent Studies have found that farm-raised Tilapia may cause more inflammation – Farm-raised tilapia has always been a popular source for fish, not only because it is widely available in the US, but it is also very inexpensive. However, before you stock up on Tilapia, you may want to know about its correlation to inflammation. Recent studies have concluded that eating Tilapia may worsen inflammation that can lead to heart disease, arthritis, asthma and a world of other serious health problems. People who resort to eating more fish as a way to get their dose of omega-3-fatty-acids and lessen their risk of heart attacks may want to hold off on the tilapia. In fact, scientists have found that the inflammatory potential of tilapia is far greater than that of a hamburger or pork bacon!

2. Farmed fish may have at least 10 times the amount of cancer causing organic pollutants compared to the wild variety – This can most likely be attributed to the feeds that are used on farm raised fish. If you knew what went into the feeds of farm raised fish you would be horrified. Apparently, chicken feces is one of the main ingredients that go into farm fish feed. Not only that, the transfer of pig and duck waste to fish farms is also a very common practice.

3. Farm-bred fish have been found to have high concentrations of antibiotics and pesticides – Where do farm-bred fish get their antibiotics? The crowded conditions of fish farms cause the fish to be more susceptible to disease. To keep them alive, farm owners give antibiotics to the fish to stave off disease. Farm-bred fish are also treated with pesticides to combat sea lice. The pesticides used to treat these fish are so deadly that they have been caused to kill wild salmon that are accidentally exposed to them. These pesticides are also eventually released in the ocean where they get into the bodies and systems of other marine life.

4. Farm-bred fish also have lower levels of healthy nutrients - Many of us consume fish, hoping to reap the omega-3 fatty acid benefits that come with it. However, did you know that the omega-3-acids that are found in farm-raised fish are less usable to our bodies compared to wild bred fish. Farm-raised fish also has a lower protein content. Not only that, because farm-raised fish are kept in cages, they have the tendency to be fattier, and can have a higher concentration of omega-6 acids. The problem with getting too much omega-6 acids is that they may cause inflammation to the body due to imbalance.

5. Dioxin levels are 11 times higher in farm-bred fish compared to wild fish – Dioxin is actually a very toxic chemical that can contribute to cancer and other complications. The problem with dioxin is that once it enters our system, it can take a very long time until it is let out. The half life of dioxin is about 7 to 11 years.

I think I might have tossed the dad in the lake and told him to retrieve my fish. For many people, the dad threw away his dinner. Not sure I would let him out of the lake until he replaced the fish for me or bought the family dinner.

Go you one better, most of the tilapia and some other fish and fresh water shrimp that is farm raise are imported from overseas. Why? Because it is cheaper to purchase and a larger profit for the seller.

Here is the good part, checkout a few videos on the conditions the imported products are raised in and determine for your self if it even comes close to our standards in the USA.

I'm guessing most of you are not knowingly going to eat anything that has been raised in a turd bowl.

Good if it died............Tilapia are not native and are invasive in the wild of Florida. Takes up habitat of native Bass. I wonder if there are any destructive invasive species in this country that they would be willing to kill to save the ecosystem? Other than non-Native Americans, that is.

Exploiting the kid in that manner, the parents should be arrested IMO. Pathetic

.
In days long gone by, when I grew up, that guy would have gotten his ass seriously beaten to a pulp and even if the police showed up, nothing would have come of it because the little pansy ass primadonna would have gotten exactly what he deserved. End of discussion.

not to mention that the farmed fish have a distinctly bland taste ... the tilapia should have a mild, but medium bodied flavor ... but the farmed fish has about as much flavor and 'body' as a wet newspaper ... actually, the paper is more flavorful due to the ink printed on it ...

Oh Yeah, I know what I would have done. I would have looked at the father and child and said" You know you are right" Walked over to fish, grabbed it by the tail and pulled the Hulk move like Hulk did Loki in the movie. I would have beat that fish over a rock until its eyeballs flew out and brains splattered all over the kid and then said "Now its not suffering any more" That would get the kid at least 2 years on the couch with physiologists. After that the father would be investigated for mind fu*king the kid, and I would have got to go home and eat my fish. Also I would think that after that the kid would never go up to any one and start that **** again afraid that he will get covered in blood and guts.

If you have not seen that movie, Here is the scene that I am speaking of and yes it is my favorite scene.
