In a major scientific breakthrough, researchers have harnessed a gene-editing tool to correct a disease-causing gene mutation in human embryos, preventing the mutation from passing to future generations.

In the stunning discovery, a research team led by Oregon Health and Science University reported that embryos can fix themselves if scientists jump-start the process early enough.

There was no indication how soon ordinary patients could take advantage of this technique.

The new technique, which was tested on clinical-quality human eggs, uses the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool to target a mutation in nuclear DNA that causes hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, according to the researchers. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a common genetic heart disease that can cause heart failure and sudden cardiac death. The disease affects approximately 1 in 500 people and is a common cause of sudden heart failure in young people, particularly young athletes.

The research was published Aug. 2 in the journal Nature.

While the procedure is nowhere near ready to be tried in a pregnancy, the research suggests that scientists might alter DNA in a way that protects not just one baby from a disease that runs in the family, but his or her offspring as well.

“Every generation on would carry this repair because we’ve removed the disease-causing gene variant from that family’s lineage,” said the report’s senior author, Dr. Shoukhrat Mitalipov, director of OHSU’s Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy, in a statement. “By using this technique, it’s possible to reduce the burden of this heritable disease on the family and eventually the human population.”

The research offers fresh insight into a technique that could apply to thousands of inherited genetic disorders affecting millions of people worldwide, according to the experts.

IDK.....this chit sorta scares me...it isn't even a religious thing...I just don't think we should be messing with the genes...even if we fix some nasty stuff, we're going to have unintended consequences. Not to mention fn up evolution.

I would argue this is a natural part of evolution. The ability for a species to carve out it's own evolutionary path would be a critical component on getting to the next level of biological engineering.

So, in order for us to be the anal probing azzholes flying around the galaxy, we need to be able to bring our species to the next level.

CRISPR FTW!!!

Lets get in them jeans genes!!!

Edit:

Oh, and we need to cure JJans gayness.

I'm excited for the future of genetic medicine.

Before I went into nursing I was a biochemical engineering major and studied pretty heavily in genetics and genetic engineering.

Genetic engineering and medicine is an incredible field and is the future of medicine.

It's still a long way off, but it's coming.

I get what Dave is talking about. How can you be sure you are not causing a mutation that is disastrous to humanity? Also there is a whole religious, moral, ethical discussion here. But, the implications are mind boglingly positive.

Jesus makes his case very clear, if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out.

If we can somehow use genetic engineering to make humanity more resiliant to mental illness and general weakness that would cause man to be lazy and engage in idle activities then it is a victory for the greater glory of God.

And if we can make me an army of winged attack monkeys with which I can destroy all religious people it will definitely be a victory for the greater glory of god...

Dude, we're talking about epic gene hack skills here. Jesus didn't know wtf a gene was let alone how to hack one.

Seriously though, I would have to make an airborne monkey virus that takes out victor's religious nut killing monkey's after they've done their job so I can single handedly rule the world...

Whooo boy we could get into medical law and ethics discussion with this one lol. If this was an option I would not have had the issues I do now. With that said, what happens to the natural selection process. Nature keeps balance, some reasons are natural that the human race has these issues, some reasons we do to ourselves but even at that its natural selection because its human nature at the moment lol.

If we cure, fix the genetic issues then we might run into the issue of over population, even more use of natural resources, more reasons to point a finger at who is responsible for dare I say Global Warming bwahahahahah...

I do believe Hawkings got it right when he said "The extinction of the human race will be due to human inelegance". We have a tendency to do these great and wonderful things because we can but, we do not think about the consequences and consider human psychology or nature. Just looking at my generation, (Gen X I am,) I see more idiots in the world today than what was around 10 years ago and yes I can include myself in that bunch of idiots from time to time.
Ignorance and stupidity as a whole has grown exponentially in my humble opinion.

To quote a saying from The Men in Black " The person is smart, The people as a whole are stupid " Albert Enstein wrote "I made one great mistake in my life... when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made" He knew the nature of the human race. He knew that we would be ignorant in our use of his contribution to the making of such and not think far enough ahead to realize the consequences.

Granted If this technology had been available years ago I would still have friends and family that would be here today and I could live allot longer than what is set for me. Then I have to ask myself. Is that being selfish on my part. Would it be worth the possible (most likely) outcome in the long haul for future generations.

We are a product of our own environment, Nature vs Nurture ect and so on. Our day to day lives make us who we are. Thing is the majority of people never change the way they do things even if they see the need to do such, again I can include myself in that bunch on allot of things. The key word being Majority.

As far as the "Religious aspect" well here it is.... The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

All of this is just my thoughts, beliefs and opinion because of my every day life and my experiences. Fact is our perception is our reality and everyone perceives things differently. I just cant help that some are not educated enough to perceive things the way I do Sarcasm lol....

Stop me if you are this story....A man gets new tools and he runs around the house fixing all kinds of stuff. Fans stop squeaking, doors close properly for first time in years, dishwasher doesn't leak anymore, that crooked shelf is finally straight, but the washing machine that had a little rattle now is a heap of scrap metal....

Know what this reminds me of?

Rome.

Rome was a republic too.

Took on massive amounts of debt and had to keep the war drums beating to somehow pay for it.

Bread and circuses.

Name the sin/vice and it was available. Towards the end it was a smorgasbord of debauchery. Didn't matter the kink, didn't matter at all.

Fast forward to now and look at us unraveling. Just like them. Nothing new under the sun.

We're nothing like Rome. Lol if anything it's a massive fight between those who are ultra-conservative and those who are commies with global interests encroaching on our sovereignity.

In the old days Rome was the world.

In da 80s, I was working at a "think tank" in the Bay Area.
The AIDS crisis was blowing up, and we were doing all kinds of research, projections, forecasts, blah blah......just trying to get some objective/ measureable answers to many questions.
The reality of the situation at the time wasn't pretty.
But there was this one guy I remember, who was a triue giant brain dude..........and he was pretty convinced that genetic engineering, still in its infancy in those days, would be a major contributing factor to the "fall" of civilization as we know it.
He is no longer with us, but I still tend to agree with him.

Sometimes you gotta go backwards to go forwards.

Might be the end as we know it, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the end.
