The states with the highest number of hate groups may not be the areas of the country that many people would assume.

California ranks highest among the 50 states, with nearly 80 different hate groups calling the Golden State home, says a report from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Most of the groups are concentrated in Southern California, the San Francisco Bay area and the Sacramento region, the report says.

Data show the western half of the U.S. has significantly fewer hate groups than the East Coast, the report says, but California -- the nation's most populous state -- easily has the highest number of hate groups operating within its borders.

The “Hate Map” report shows 917 hate groups operating across the country. It includes data not only on white supremacists, but Black Separatist organizations and anti-LGBT groups as well.

The report also cites numbers from 2016 that show 130 Ku Klux Klan groups and 193 Black Separatist groups active across the county. The SPLC also notes there has been a nearly 200 percent increase in anti-Muslim groups since 2015.

In 2011, the total number hit its peak with over 1,000 groups operating. That number dropped to 784 just three years later, but there has been a steady increase since then. The SPLC also says in its report that the country has seen an unprecedented rise in hate groups since the turn of the century. In 1999 when there were only 457 documented groups in the country.

Florida ranks No. 2 with 63 hate groups, and is No. 1 on the East Coast.

Ranking third is New York state, home to 47 hate groups. Pennsylvania is not far behind, with 40 groups.

States with the lowest numbers of hate groups lie mostly in the Midwest and West. Iowa has only four groups in operation, while Wyoming and New Mexico have two apiece and North Dakota and Vermont have one each.

All the usual suspects will be along shortly to deny these findings and show how it's really the mid-west ( especially Indiana ) and it's " trailer park residents " that are to blame for ALL THAT HATE....Sick

Data for the “Hate Map” list was compiled using hate group publications and websites, citizen and law-enforcement reports, sources from the field and news reports, the SPLC says.

If that's how their counting, then wouldn't the South, with it's high numbers of Evangelicals, still be in pole position?

Don't think the SPLC is as creditable as it once was. When they first started they were pretty much spot on. In recent years they have become more about the money and more of a smear group than champion of the oppressed.

When I was still working, part of my job was to represent our college district in the Orange County Human Relations Commission, an effort to fight hate crime and promote tolerance. We received monthly briefings by local, state and federal law enforcement officials about activities of hate groups in our area. White supremacists, who were considered terrorists, were at the top of everyone's lists, especially after 9/11, when hate crimes spiked against all minorities, but especially Middle Easterners and people from India, who were presumed to be Muslims. So I see credibility in those numbers.

Yeah... I don't really see how this is surprising. There's a lot of open space in CA... northern CA has all the meth labs,... lots of space out there where hate groups can form and flourish. Same reason there are so many out in Idaho and eastern washington.

Ever notice when one group insists on toleration they seem to NOT want to tolerate those whom they want to tolerate them. As long as one group plays the victim there will always be segregation. I for one want nothing to do with any person, group or otherwise who chose to blame me or others similarity situated to me for their own failures. I have literally opened doors for many people who are not of my race or nationality. I've had many of the same open doors for me. It seems both they and I were taught proper manners growing up. It's the people who want paint everyone else as racists that are the true racists.

Until last weekend I thought we could safely put Nazis and pedophiles in that category too tho.

And Trump has praised Kim Jung Un.... I believe the quote is "you gotta give him credit. How many young guys -- he was like 26 or 25 when his father died -- take over these tough generals, and all of a sudden ... he goes in, he takes over, and he’s the boss. Its incredible. He wiped out the uncle, he wiped out this one, that one. I mean this guy doesn't play games. "

Sounds like admiration and jealousy...

Yes I've noticed....some media outlets just won't give that angle of the discussion any air time or print.
