Los Angeles just voted to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day. Although Columbus Day is still a federal holiday, 21 states do not celebrate/recognize it. Six of the 29 states that do mark the day as a holiday celebrate it as Native Americans or Indigenous People's Day.

Is this another example of history being re-written or whitewashed? If so, it seems contradictory. Why is the majority of Americans saying that the Confederacy lost and because its purpose was to dismantle the US and promote the dominance of one race over another, its leaders should not be honored with public statues.

Yet on the other hand, many of the same people say that even though Columbus and the Europeans who followed him conquered the Americas, they did so by destroying the Native American people, so he doesn't deserve to be honored.

But Columbus was a winner...right?

So...is this the new standard: we only honor our heroes if they do not engage in oppression, genocide or exhibit any signs of white supremacy?

It's all just anti-Catholic rhetoric. This phenomenon is not new in the world. Wherever the demographic is shifting to Authoritarian Socialism you will see this. It happened in Russia and the Eastern Bloc states, it happened in China, it happened in Venezuela. All these radical "free-thinkers" who think they're entitled to housing, food, water, et cetera rather than earning it through work as a free man.

Wherever there is gross authoritarianism you will see these kinds of historical abuses.

The normal American trend would be for Protestants to be the ones pointing the finger at the Church but with a number of Lutheran and Methodist bishops being invited to participate during the Catholic mass and the fact the here locally in Houston, our Bishop invited the Methodist Church to ordain their Bishops at the Co-Cathedral I hardly would consider that the case.

The Atheists expect the constitution to mean freedom from religion which is why they are so vehemant about getting rid of any trace of Columbus or Religious history despite the fact that St Brendan arrived in Connecticut long before the vikings and had a peacable relationship with the native Americans here.

lol jjan...

I'm a Native atheist, I have no desire to have any rights stripped from anyone. In fact, I'm a staunch supporter of the first and second amendments.

I'd rather they keep columbus day, say as everyone can remember his murderous acts of attempted genocide. History needs to be remembered, but if he merely drops out of history... I don't really care. There's plenty of other murderous conquerors for kids to read about.

Even though I tend to look at religious beliefs as antiquated ideas from the past that can't stand up to scrutiny from modern knowledge and tech, I still think you should be able to go kneel on a wood beam on Sundays (or Saturdays) if you so choose.

With that, just like most sets of people, there are going to be good with the bad. My grandmother grew up with a gentlemen by the name of Father Bill who was a man I very much respected. He would always come to my Grandmother's events, and lead prayers and such. Just because I choose not to believe, doesn't mean I shun my family who does, or am not able to be friends with those who do.

With that, there's a lot of history that people don't hear about when it comes to natives, much more than I can get into in this thread. In any case, I believe that history (good and the bad) needs to be preserved, just as I believe as much history as possible should be conserved for future generations who are interested in the knowledge.

I'm very much opposed to sweeping history under the rug, and I'm very opposed to changing history by the politically motivated. Though I am in favor of updating the history books as new evidence is found.

IMO, atheist catch more discrimination that any racial or sexual group. Almost all other beliefs systems tend to tell their followers that atheists should not be trusted nor befriended, and in some cases "killed where ever you shall find them".

Maybe more appropriately it's the anti-religious that are taking on the crusade against those who do believe.

Can't say I ever heard of them, was going to chalk it up to being before my time, but they were around I guess when they would have been my time.

At that time though, I was too busy chasing tail and grinding on random chicks in dance clubs... so, probably why I never heard of them.

If someone is offended by something that happened in 1492 then they lack the fortitude to take them seriously.
