I know the majority of us are fog

I am surprised that no one has yet to mention Sia given that the majority of her songs she has written and performed has hit the charts. Not only the ones she has done for herself but also the many more that she has written for others that have hit the charts. Granted shes not an oldie so to speak but dang what a voice.

The pipes on this woman is astounding to me. The heart and soul I feel from her when she sings especially this song is just WOW...

I would have to agree with #13 and #15, Nicks and Rondstat. Both had one hell of a set of pipes on them.

Never saw Nicks in concert but did get to see Rondstat when she was a solo warm up for Neil Young in Feb 73.

Now that I think of it I would have to add Ann Wilson from Heart, another set of great pipes.

I have never been much of a fan of female vocalists (other than to look at), but the couple I do enjoy are Lauren Daigle and Lacey Sturm from Flyleaf.

Rhonda Vincent . . . The Queen of Bluegrass. (One day older than me. Ha)
Google her. She's amazing. Her band, The Rage is incredible.

But, my favorite singer is my wife. But, she's retired now, but I still love to listen to her sing.

Puddles, aka Big Mike Geier, is a friend of mine. I’ve known him for well over 10 years. I’ve worked many a show with him. He’s an amazing talent. He’s put on an annual Elvis Birthday & Deathday Show in Atlanta for over twenty years. A verbatim copy of the Aloha from Hawaii concert with full band & showgirls. A YouTube search for Kingsized Elvis Royale is a worthy search. He also had a very popular gig at the downtown Atlanta Hilton for years with a Don Ho Tongo-Hiti Hawaian Show, and he put on a Jazz Quartet show at the popular Rays on the River Restaurant for years, too. Great Guy. Great Singer.

Puddles is coming to the Boston area in a couple weeks.
I'm looking into going, but not sure I can get there midweek due to work commitments.

Why is this in the female vocalist thread?

Three little ducks go into a Bar......

"Say, what's your name?" the bartender asked the first duck.

"Huey," was the reply.

"How's your day been, Huey?"

"Great. Lovely day. Had a ball. Been in and out of puddles all day. What else could a duck want?" said Huey

"Oh. That's nice," said the bartender. He turned to the second duck, "Hi, and what's your name?"

"Dewey," came the answer from duck number two.

"So how's your day been, Dewey! ?" he asked.

"Great. Lovely day. I've had a ball too. Been in and out of puddles all day myself. What else could a duck want?"

The bartender turned to the third duck and said, "So, you must be Louie?"

"No, My name is Puddles."

I couldn't help but see that Linda Ronstadt's name was mentioned several times. What a sweetheart! ..and a talent! I've been blessed to have seen her several times, so I'd like to give you guys a comparison to a favorite song of mine that she made famous, written by Tracy Nelson. Now the reason I'm mentioning this is because Tracy is one helluva singer in her own right, so I thought I'd take the time to reply and share. Linda was famous while I doubt very few here have heard of/seen Tracy.

First, here's Linda's version...

Linda Ronstadt - Down So Low ( Live ) ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7gCtCWxTYo

Now here's Tracy doing it...

Tracy Nelson ~ Down So Low (Live From Cell Block D)...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5s45BE8X0mM

What'd ya think?
If that didn't stir your soul you're dead. Ha!

Since I'm typing why not add a few more of my favorites that haven't been mentioned..

Billie Holiday - My man don't love me...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jf0ldEBBJhY

Mahalia Jackson - Mahalia Jackson @ Newport Jazz Festival 1958...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq7Kf25Dou0

Nina Simone - Sinnerman...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH3Fx41Jpl4

Nina Simone - When Malindy Sings / Swing Low Sweet Chariot (Live)...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49g8QJ2-6f4

I could go on..but you guys hate jazz, right?
..a little more modern??

Diana Krall - Live In Paris....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-CeriawS-8

She's another stunning beauty that can sing, write AND play the piano!
If you want a great DVD to watch on your home theater get Live in Paris.
..too bad she married Elvis Costello. That broke my heart!

Something Celtic/World music?

Loreena McKennitt - Night Ride Across the Caucasus...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MjdrQPu6cg

if you like that, here's the album... Loreena McKennitt - The Book Of Secrets...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPfU7OEfBm8

Nobody mentioned Joss Stone??? WTF

Joss Stone - I put a spell on you...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1sa1t3M_4E#t=1m01s

I have very eclectic tastes in music but gravitate towards jazz, blues and soul.
I love singer/songwriters especially.
But really, I listen to everything from Zydeco to the ABBA. Old and new stuff.
I grew up on Rock n' Roll, Country and Stax/Motown with classical piano thrown in for punishment. Going to Catholic school meant I had obligatory Latin and pipe organ music to deal with also. To say I'm all over the place musically is an understatement. Ha!
Anyway...enough.

I'm going to stop with one last personal favorite, Ruthie Foster.
Anybody heard of her?
I've seen her perform many times. Always a treasure.
She's somebody that should be HUGE because of her incredible talent but, alas, not pop/commercial/trendy enough! So sad that so many great artists slip through the cracks..

..for all you Bob Marley fans(?)...

eTown Finale with Blues Traveler & Ruthie Foster - No Woman No Cry...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9Q43KXvcyo

..something a little bluesy?
Robben Ford & Ruthie Foster - "Call It Stormy Monday" Live...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDQyEwGKTr4

How bout a Crosby/Stills/Nash tune?? With Jefferson Airplane's guitarist!

Jorma Kaukonen and Ruthie Foster - Long Time Gone ...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwnoFJq9Usg

I'll close it out with this amazing song...

Phenomenal Woman - Ruthie Foster Live at Antone's...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkYh2BYONms

..a poem by Maya Angelou.
So many more great artists.

Peace/Shalom

The only female singer that I thought could keep up with Linda Ronstadt was early Ann Wilson. Hell, now they are about equal as well, Linda because of her health, Ann because she screamed so much she ruined her voice...

That being said, I've always liked Dale Krantz of Rossington Collins. She compares favorably to Janis Joplin but not as gravelly.

Bonnie Tyler had that Bright Eye song that was a chick song but I thought she had a strong voice.. the only song I know she did tho.. Mellow

That song is "Total Eclipse of the Heart". It was written by Jim Steinman originally for Meatloaf but at the time Meatloaf was having vocal issues. As a result Bonnie Tyler recoreded it. At the same time REO Speedwagon recorded "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" - another Steinman song written for Meatloaf.
