Geometry & Algebra are Racist...

A math education professor at the University of Illinois says the ability to solve geometry and algebra problems and teaching such subjects perpetuates so-called white privilege.

Rochelle Gutierrez laid out her views on the subject in an article for a newly published anthology for math educators titled, “Building Support for Scholarly Practices in Mathematics Methods.”

“School mathematics curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean Theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans," she says, according to Campus Reform.

She also says that addressing equity in mathematics education will come when teachers can understand and negotiate the politics outside the classroom.

“On many levels, mathematics itself operates as whiteness. Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as white,” she writes.

Further, she says mathematics operates with unearned privilege in society, “just like whiteness.”

Mathematics itself operates as Whiteness.
- Rochelle Gutierrez
Gutierrez did not respond to an email from Fox News Tuesday seeking comment.

“As with all of our faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Prof. Gutierrez has the rights of academic freedom necessary to pursue scholarship and research on important subjects and to reach conclusions even if some might disagree with those conclusions,” he said.

He added, “The issues around equity and access in education are real – with significant implications to our entire educational system. Exploring challenging pedagogical questions is exactly what faculty in a world-class college of education should be doing.”

In the book Gutierrez points out that mathematics operates as a proxy for intelligence, but asks, “are we really that smart just because we do mathematics?”

“As researchers, are we more deserving of large grants because we focus on mathematics education and not social studies or English?”

Gutierrez says evaluations of math skills can perpetuate discrimination against minorities, especially if they do worse than their white counterparts, Campus Reform reported.

“If one is not viewed as mathematical, there will always be a sense of inferiority that can be summoned” because the average person won't necessarily question the role of mathematics in society, she writes.

According to the website, Gutierrez adds that there are so many people who “have experienced microaggressions from participating in math classrooms… [where people are] judged by whether they can reason abstractly.”

Her solution is a call for teachers to develop political "conocimeinto," or knowledge, to better prepare them in deciding on what learning opportunities work best for their students.

I work with a guy that has a Bachelor's Degree in Bio-Mechanical Engineering AND an MBA from Tulane. He's about 10 times smarter than I am. His accent sounds like a Puerto Rican Cholo. I'm pretty sure he would laugh at this

Not outraged.
But somewhat disheartened that these are the people teaching our children.

This professor isn't simply ignorant.
It takes a special kind of mental deficiency to consider math racially biased.
Do we want mentally imbalanced people teaching at our universities? (Rhetorical, of course. Because liberals don't care as long as the rhetoric aligns with their agenda.)

We need Republican teachers teaching conservative talking points. This emotional garbage that the dems are touting as education is disgusting.

Then don't send your kids there. And I'm pretty sure that the majority here don't care as long as the rhetoric aligns with their agenda or belief system. fog

So, we should send our kids to colleges based on our political affiliations and not based on curriculum..?? Think

They can go there and not take any classes from that particular professor. Also, a significant number of college students have to choose their college based upon what they can afford and not the curriculum. I do think this particular professor is a loon based upon these comments from her. All I cared about when I was in engineering school was passing my classes. I had no idea and didn't care what any of my professors' thoughts were on anything. fog

And I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that these types did not exist or @ least were not given a pulpit in which to disseminate their message to their students. But alas I've been wrong before...

I certainly had a few professors that let the class know their thoughts on current topics. I particularly recall two. One was my freshman calculus teacher who was a child prodigy who got his doctorate when he was 17 and it seemed like all he talked about was how advanced education was all BS. The other was a Muslim TA (for differential equations) who would fuss at the Muslim students for not fasting during Ramadan. It never bothered me because both classes where pretty hard and I had to work pretty hard to keep my head above water in both classes.

Paul you are correct that times were different a few decades ago.

Problem: colleges have a political bias.
Solution: Don't send your kids there.

I guess when a girl gets raped you tell her she shouldn't have worn that sexy outfit.

If colleges want to employ these types....fine, but the least they co do is put their political beliefs on their class description page so the kids can make an informed decision. If they ( the profs. ) have no problem disseminating their PERSONAL political beliefs in their classrooms they should have no issue with putting it out there for ALL to see.

Pretty sure math/engineering students aren't going to be taking any classes from this lady.

Also pretty sure that it wasn't Isaac Newton's fault that Africans were too busy running from lions instead of developing calculus.

Yes, the ancient white guys that laid the groundwork for modern mathematics and physics should absolutely get credit for their work.

Oh, I'm not even mad though, and I don't hate her or anything... in fact, she's not horrible looking, if I was single I would probably hit it.
