I'd LOVE to see them offshore the debacle.

It's a joke to begin with.

Edited. I swear it initially said billion, but after looking it up, it says million. Either way, a good step for us to stop financing something that doesn't benefit us.

Uh...

It's a UN internal budget cut, not a reduction in our contribution.

Well, at least it's a cut. We contribute more than anyone else.

What is the UN's annual budget? Knowing this will give us an idea of what effect the cut may have...

^^^ Thought it was supposed to be 2% of each participating Country's annual GDP.
Hence the problem... a lot of Countries don't contribute their share and the US is expected to pickup their slack.

"It paid about $1.2 billion of the 2016-2017 budget of $5.4 billion. "The United States also is the largest single financial contributor, at 28.5 percent, to a separate budget for United Nations peacekeeping operations, which totals $6.8 billion in the 2017-2018 budget finalized in June."

oh the un

the self congratulating, limp suits who continually suckle at the American wealth tit and occasionally come up for air to condemn us and our policies

cut our contributions down to an actual "fair share" level

We may come to regret turning our back to our partners in peace-keeping and dissolving an important peace-keeping process in the global arena. Globalization has been a constant driver of world affairs since Columbus established the bridge between Western and Eastern civilizations. There have been many times in our history when the UN and NATO have helped the US when confronting an international crisis. They proved their worth in the aftermath of WWI and WWII and helped smooth tensions during the Cold War. The amount is really small potatoes when considering the total pile of money we spend on defense and foreign policy.

Trump is the first US President to question the wisdom of membership in the UN and in NATO. All those who believe he is the brightest of foreign policy minds and the most learned about US history among his predecessors...raise your hands.

Incorrect, Bush clearly superceded UN directives during the Desert Shield era. This is just business as usual from American leadership which time and time again have stepped away from the UN, a device which we ourselves created, in order to serve American interests abroad and to also protect minority populations in hostile areas which would have otherwise been destroyed due to the slow movement of buracracy.

No doubt the UN has had its share of challenges, but it is the embodiment of an American Ideal. An ideal that is representative of an America that emerged from two catastrophic world wars and believed in the achievement of a lasting world peace. The genesis of the UN is a marker of when the world recognized that "America is Great."
