I was at work and heard this when we opened the doors at 945, had two people that wanted to apply for Costco membership as Sams was closed. Had a half dozen more myself that wanted to join through the day.

My heart goes out to these people that find themselves out of work, I bet we will be flooded with applications. Sure glad the economy is going so well....

As one that spent most of last year "holding out for a management position" I am so grateful to have been hired at Costco late last year. I was hired as a temp but I aced my 30 day review and still working while 80% of my "hired date" group have all been let go. Right now I'm feeling blessed.

Congrats. At least in my area Costco is much better and always much busier than Sam's. Never understood how they competed.

Shut down 3 of them around here. Didn't even tell the employees. Just a sign on the door when they showed up for work. Very bad form. Not talking

They have promised all Sam's employees jobs at other Sam's and Walmart.

Yes they're closing some here as well...always preferred Costco over Sams Club ( Sams was just the first to come to town here. )

so have most other folks, ergo the closing of about 5 dozen Sams Club stores across the country ... we used to have "membership" in both Sams and Costco, but cancelled Sams after realizing we'd not used it even once in the prior year ...

Wow, I belong to Sams Club because where I live the closest one is more than an hour a way. I'll pass 5 Sams Club locations to get to theirs. I had a Costco membership but stopped using it because it wasn't worth the extra time or gas money to get to them. Maybe Costco will expand one day to be a real threat to them, I don't know. This is the 1st Sams Club that I've ever heard closing though.

Agreed...VERY bad form. This on top of stating they were going to raise the minimum wage to 11 bucks and start chipping in to assist with families choosing to adopt children...its the Walton's too!

They can afford it!

First off - congrats to you Waldo. It is amazing how poor of a work ethic so many of the gen-X and millenials have today.

Corporate closed 63 Sam’s Club locations yesterday with little or no notice to their employees. Including one close to where I used to live. Very hard on those folks, their families as well as the communities that count on the tax revenue. My old local store apparently contributed over one million dollars in tax revenue to the local city. Tough to loose that revenue stream.
The raises went to Walmart employees. Glad for them.

C'mon Robert...you're smarter than this. What you say may be true but how many $11 dollar an hour employees are going to move to a different city for another $11/hr job. They don't make enough to afford the moving expenses. I can't wait until Jeff Bezos buys Target and finally shutters Walmart for good.

#10 the sams that closed closest to me is next door to a Walmart so they don't even have to change bus stops. They won't need all 100 some employees though so I guess hand picking the 'cream of the crop' is an added bonus for them.

Personally I'm a bit happy then one near me is closing. It was the only reason the wife had to go to the crappy part of town still. Forcing her to drive a bit further north to the better neighborhood I think is a blessing in disguise. She's already priced everything she buys at sams with Costco and it's cheaper at sams so don't think switching to them is an option for us.

I hate Walmart...China's Retailer in America, helped create the class known as the Working Poor, people with jobs who qualify for government assistance.

I don't think they reached MA until after the switch, at least none near me that I remember.

I prefer Costco to Sam's as well, but our Costco is always wall to wall people... and they used to let the plus members go in a little early and now they don't. Costco plus membership = $110. Sam's plus membership = $100 and they give me a $25 voucher because of my service. Easy choice for me.

Sam's lets plus members in 2 hours early, and the lines are shorter and the gas lines are shorter.

Sam's club gas is ok, not great. Personally, I'll wait the extra 10 minutes for better quality elsewhere.

walmart/sams club "sh*t quality for a low price" approach to retail is perfectly summed up on their milk label... labels from decent quality milk say "from cows not treated with rbST"... walmarts milk label reads something to the effect of "nobody can actually prove rBST is bad for you"...

My employer Caterpillar does the same thing today with a bunch of low pay scab outfits. My wages are frozen while I subsidize a fortune 50 corp. with my tax dollars. Ain't it great? ram27bat

so, here's where I get more confused than normal...warning, you may not know that I am a libturd. Reasonable but still a libturd. Loved by many here, but still a libturd.

this has become the model for so many businesses. In a matter of just a couple of decades, appreciation, pensions, and generosity toward loyal long term employees has been determined to be a waste of money that robs upper management of obscene bonuses (even when they lose money). Incentives to stay with an employer has purposely been removed, they feel smarter replacing you with a lower paid rookie every few years, sometimes having you train your replacement!

Virtually no Americans have lifetime careers with the same company anymore, many because the company has made it that way. It's the new M.O. of the current crop of executives...human resources are considered the same as mechanical assets and cold hard number analysis is the basis for employment decisions.

Here's the confusion part...the most vulnerable, the lowest skilled, those in the most tenuous situations of jobs, healthcare insurance, basically everything 98.2% of stuff cbid members do not worry about (source: Victor's post somewhere talking about how most of us can afford to burn $10 cigars whenever we want), those same under or unemployed uninsured people like the denizens of the rust belt that won't be recovering soon...those people swept a multi billionaire and his posse into office. ..

22 and 23...

I get that. I also voted against Hillary. But I also voted against Trump. Not a vote FOR Johnson, but against the other two parties.

But we have the Electoral College, not popular vote, and Trump stole all those in most of the areas that did not share in the recovery enjoyed by most of America under Obama (admit it or not, it happened). Now those folks lose even more.

I say "stole" because he really isn't the best bet to help those areas. Admittedly, neither was Hillary, but now those folks lose even more as the swamp straining (not draining) is returning the architects of their pain into positions of prominence.

so, I have zero issues with anyone supporting policies that I do not support. It's what really Makes America Still Great...but the other stuff is indefensible. I have hopes that my good friend Tailgater will join the rest of us in recognizing this.

We deserve better.

I didn't vote for him but because of Vic's and TW's posts here alone...I just might in the next election.

The best they can do is Oprah?

Yeah. That's where the DNC is at.

Their base is filled with wide-eyed koo-koo madness with their pink pu$$y hats, racism, and class warfare. Good luck! They got NOTHING!

The mere fact that he hasn't even announced yet...tells me the handlers don't want him. The DNC is sooo thin with candidates that Oprah will stampede them.

I have no idea what Opra is about politically, but I would be willing to bet a lot of money that she would beat Trump in an election. Most likely by a wide margin. This is dependent of course on Trump's remaing years, but it doesn't look good for him at this moment.

Thread jack off now? Lol

Our traffic and applications up over 25% yesterday. We brought in additional staff and set up tables to process new members. It was crazier then the three days before Christmas.

Best news was senior manager offered me a permanent position! I'll still be in Security but because of my past experience I'll be cross trained to handle vault, membership as well as work in jewelry department.

Yay me!

It is tough on workers and their families. Economics can be a sharp knife.

Provide a subpar product, with subpar support from their staff, for a prolonged period of time, and customers eventually will leave. The money follows.

Had a lousy experience at Sears in 1997. Pledged to never spend a dollar in their story again, only to return for their eventual Going Out of Business sale.

Surprised it took 20 years.

Good for you, Waldo.

Have a level of concern about Costco getting buried in a surge of business, compromising their ability to continue proving the high level of service.
