Many moons ago, during the great cigar boom of the twentieth century, there existed a group of hardy American cigar smokers who frequented the website forum/bulletin board. They went by the name of "The Village Idiots' and frequently herfed at Whippany, New Jersey facility. I am curious if any beside myself are still alive and smoking cigars. Does anybody here fit into that category or know anybody who does? I went by Cameroon back then but that moniker was already taken on this forum.

One never knows where they may find an idiot. Me thinks the Jersey forum petered out or changed years ago. Those young idiots are all old and older idiots by now. But back then when men were made of steel and ships were made of wood there reigned a formidable size group of idiots that traveled the highways and byways to that certain cigar emporium where they dwelled in wisps of smoke, dreamed big dreams and were certain they would never get old.

you know what I like about you?
You have the brains and humor to treat our comments like spitballs off a battleship...perhaps the wrong gang, but you stumbled into a pile of idiots after all these years.

I'd say your best bets for answers around here would be jespear, though from PA he's in with the current South Jersey Herfers, and maybe dpnewell, or currently through his wife's persona.

I can't say more due to unexpired gag orders.

I operate on the assumption that one cannot properly draw on a cigar with an overly tight sphincter. Tight sphincters and cigars are mutually exclusive. Anybody attempting to experience both at the same time is kidding himself and running opposed to cosmic karma. This could be a result of smoking crap cigars that are priced as if they are manna from Heaven. Coming to that realization always tightens my sphincter so I try a different stick and hope for a better experience. Let us breath deep, smile and not shoot the messenger.

I think you're smoking them with the wrong orifice.

You Jersey boys.

Yikes! No wonder they all ran away!

No Jersey Boy here. Born and raised in PA other than four years in the service right after the Civil War. There were no PA forums that I knew of in those days. There was no Cbid or for that matter half the brands that exist today. Clint Eastwood was still biting the ends off of his Parodi ceegars in spaghetti westerns. Five years prior the average American had never tried a cigar other than the classic drug store brands.

I must conclude after recent information that the village idiots are probably all dead and that Camoloon is the lone survivor.

The side that is still allowed to have statues in public venues. Talking about tight sphincters, political correctness and historical engineering are two of the things that tighten mine. Well perhaps the old Village Idiots are all retired off to Florida or shuffling behind their walkers in some NYC suburb with only faint memories of those glory days in the early 90s when fifty guys sat in a smoke filled room and talked trash and bragged about finding the hard to get cigar that nobody else could find. Never the less, I shall await word from Mark Twain in the afterlife. Do you remember Mark? He said if there were no cigars in Heaven he absolutely refused to go. I have seen no reports of Mark Twain sightings so I assume he is up there smoking. Have a great day folks.

ZRX is the one you want to speak to. Other side of the country, but if you go camping with him, I'm sure you won't have any problems with an overly tight sphincter while you smoke your cigars.

OH MY! Campers with benefits. That's a horse of a different color there. Do you think he'd trade me 25 Don Carlos Fuentes for my 50 count box of Marsh Wheeling stogies made in 2001?

The Pacific Northwest is a horse of a different color, so to speak. We literally attract all types, from swingers to hermits. So, if you ever get the chance, fellow Loon, check it out. There’s something for everyone up here, even slow smoked meats, if you know where to go.

Found this link to an old series or articles that has some history of the cigar business that some of you may find interesting, like how the first eight pounds of cuban seed got smuggled out of Cuba by Juan Francisco Bermejo through the Honduran Embassy If you scroll down to 8/11/99 you will see mention of the Village Idiots I previously mentioned and the writer was so kind as to mention me "Cameroon" in his random selection of members handles.

David As I look around I notice there are plenty of old farts to go around. Welcome to the club. To be honest, I knew the VI people by their forum handle only and time and clouded memory have erased a great deal of that knowledge. The most popular brands of that time have been greatly overshadowed by all the new stuff. I wonder what all those old farts are smoking now.

Yes, I know what you are talking about. We used to have 4 to 12 guys show up every Wednesday evening. Great times, but over the years, most just faded away. Only a couple are still active on this forum. Sad.
