Seems Trump used this data mining firm during his election campaign to target people on Facebook, using private info without authorization...company is now under investigation...

Big deal?

An architect of the federal healthcare law said last year that a "lack of transparency" and the "stupidity of the American voter" helped Congress approve ObamaCare.

Yes the Democrats did this as well, and even bragged that the Republicans were too dumb and slow to do it. So when they find out they weren't they freak out and it's bad. Typical democRAT stuff.

right leaning media all claim Obama and Trump did the same...

left leaning media says they're not - Obama did not use CA, but designed their own data mining program that adhered to privacy regs and required personal approval... Trump's use of CA was without authorization of persons targeted...

neutral news site (Reuters) says Trump's use of CA may have violated US elections laws and CEO of CA admitted to using questionable/unethical methods to woo customers...

IMHO: does it matter? prolly not...if some US voters are too lazy and gullible to fall prey to fake news and propaganda, blaming Trump will not help... we should expect each US voter to make learned decisions when they go to the ballot box and not trust info from only one source, even if the source is a "friend"....

I think there was some data that was to have been destroyed that was not destroyed. I also think Bannon had some control/authority over it. Perhaps Kushner as well.

I've read from multiple varying sources from the right and the left about this and think there is more to find out. The thing I'm pretty certain of is what bammy did was apples, and what trump did is well.... orange. Two very different things and a false yea but equivalencey.

my heart is broken...Trump did not coin the phrase "Drain the Swamp".
It was tested out and then given to him...I guess by the hired guns.

However, I coined "Strain the Swamp" which is what ended up happening.

This isn’t a problem at all and it is notnillegal infact Obama used the same company to do the same thing during the 2012 election cycle, and everyone should know that all social media all companies mine your data and sell it hell your own state and local govts sell your voter data to companies like Cambridge analytics, all this will be is another Bull**** story used to try and smear the president by the MSM

Well the circles he makes is a little oblong on the left side so he gets further and further away from the house and cant get back. The idiot just has not realized all he has to do is turn around in the opposite direction and start making the oblong circles to get back. I personally think she has a thing for brain damaged people.

Interesting after a Google search I find no reference to Obama ever using Cambrige Analytica. Maybe this is another alternative fact. Obama had his own facebook app where people volunteered information. Perhaps you could be accurate instead of just being an ahole.

Here is another fun fact. Cambridge Analytica was founded 12/31/13. So you want to tell us again how Obama used them in his 2012 campaign? Of wait you meant Obama used facebook. But Trump used Cambridge Analytica, not facebook. Two different companies. So you meant to say Cambridge Analytica used facebook. When you choose to present an argument you need to be factual.

Apology accepted.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2018/mar/22/meghan-mccain/comparing-facebook-data-use-obama-cambridge-analyt/

The difference between the Trump and Obama campaigns is in how the data was collected. Both essentially did the same thing and it is a non-story in my opinion.

One last fact the information came from an app on facebook from the University of Cambridge. Phil, Obama came by the information in an honest ethical manner. Trump did not. If he had then this would be a non story.

The "Obama App" took info from the users photos, friends lists, and news feeds without the "friend's" permission. They then used this information to identify a person’s close friends, "which they then matched with offline public records." This allowed them to pick and choose which "friends" they would try to hit with political propoganda. This is your idea of honest and ethical?

I'm not cool with sneaky data collection, but unfortunately it is now a part of life. It has been for a very long time. Almost everything we use now collects data on us. Let us not forget that Republicans passed a bill early last year that allows our ISP's to basically track and sell our data to the highest bidder. This type of crap is here to stay and will continue to be a big part of the political process.

Ok, after a little more reading the Obama app did use friends info. So there is a large similarity. Even though those friends were voluntarily provided, they never agreed to being data mined. So now we are talking degrees of unethical. I have a problem with both. Obamas data mining should have been condemned. Trumps data mining is being condemned. This is a story.

The story should be about how we can go about making this type of behavior illegal and not the end users of the data. Thanks largely to Trump and the current Republican majority, this type of stuff will be far more prevelant in the future. They have given ISP monopolies the keys to the castle, so to speak...not to mention the right to decide what content we can and cannot view online. If you're outraged now, buckle up.
