San Francisco has long been a bastion of the far left – and now it’s paying a high price for its extreme progressive policies, including once-beautiful streets filled with dangerous syringes and human waste, resembling Third World back alleys.

The city has embraced an open drug culture at the same time it spends hundreds of millions of dollars to combat a growing homelessness problem. But no matter what the city does, it seems to have the opposite effect and make things worse.

Each year, San Francisco hands out millions of syringes to drug users – 4.45 million to be exact. San Francisco officials do this because they believe this is cheaper than the medical costs associated with injectable drug users getting diseases from sharing needles. Yet as always, politically correct progressive politicians never think about the law of unintended consequences.

Aside from the monetary cost of the syringes – over $500,000 – the needle giveaway failed to get rid of the problem it was targeting. That’s because the program that aimed to prevent the spread of HIV, hepatitis and other viral diseases is responsible for drug users littering the streets with needles infected with the diseases.

It may sound heartless, but before the free-needles program, the danger of shooting up with injectable drugs like heroin was only posed to those using the drugs. Now everyone is in danger.

A child picking up a discarded syringe without realizing what it is, a person walking in sandals, a tourist sitting on a park bench, or a couple playing with their dog in the park are all at a greater risk of getting the very diseases the city was trying to contain if they come into contact with infected needles used by ill drug users.

To fix this problem, the city is now spending tens of millions of dollars to try and clean up the problem it created. Mohammed Nuru, director of the Public Works Department, estimates his department spends about $30 million to clean up the needles and feces.

“Yes, we can clean, and then go back a few hours later, and it looks as if it was never cleaned,” Nuru said.

The increase in homelessness and public defecation has created other problems. When the fecal matter is left to dry on the street, particulates can go airborne.

Dr. Lee Riley, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, Berkeley, spoke to local reporters, warning about the dangers of fecal matter when it dries, specifically rotavirus. The doctor stated: “If you happen to inhale that, it can also go into your intestine.” The virus can be fatal...

Meh. Dumb article.
The needles are a problem... And the s++t is disgusting...

But the needles aren't a problem because of the free needle program... Sure, some may keep and reuse their needles if they weren't getting free ones... But never underestimate the willingness of a homeless drung addict to throw s++t on the sidewalk.

And the literal s++t... The likelihood of aerosolization of rotavirus through dried crap... Seems a stretch. I suspect whoever suggested that is just fearmongering. Rotavirus can apparently survive inactivation in the dried state... If it's protected by s++t... But to be dry enough to float into the air and into your mouth???? That's not going to be protected by s++t anymore.

Look on the positive side, those syringes and be used for straws by taking out the plunger, recycling them is a win win.

I was in San Fran twice...way back in the 90's....

It was a chit'hole back then...
Mostly just bums and the smell of urine...

Nowadays...I have NO DESIRE TOO SEE FECES AND SPENT DRUG NEEDLES...I WILL NEVER RETURN....

Maybe just once, to go to that MASSIVE SUNDAY BRUNCH AT THE DOWNTON SHERATON...IF IT STILL EXISTS?

THAT BRUNCH WAS AWESOME...
San Fran restaurants make a mean italian cippinno (seafood stew)...the only 2 reasons to return...

An article I read a few days ago claimed that they are only getting round 20% back. So that would leave 3.5 million plus that are being reused, or improperly disposed of.

Santa Cruz County has an "awesome" needle exchange program:

Here's a few excerpts:
========================
B) Initial Encounter
i) The new participant may be provided with fifteen (15) syringes at the initial
encounter, if no syringes are brought in for exchange

ii) Each participant is offered harm reduction supplies including: cotton, alcohol pads,
tourniquets, condoms, caps, ties, bandages, individualized or 1 quart sharps container
when available, bleach bottles, water bottle, paper or plastic bags, other supplies as
available, and educational materials. Participants should be encouraged to take
enough supplies to use a new set for each time they inject.

iii) Distribution of harm reduction supplies should be accompanied by offers to
demonstrate and/or explain the use of the supplies.

iv) Education on HIV and Hepatitis A, B & C prevention, safer sex, and safer injection
techniques should be offered at each encounter. A participant should be encouraged
to participate in individually and group delivered behavioral interventions and skills
building activities. Although participants are offered services in addition to syringe
exchange, they are under no obligation to participate in them.

Cape Cod has a "needle exchange" program in Hyannis.

When my wife taught preschool in Hyannis, within walking (stumbling?) distance of the clinic, she and her colleagues would have to do a sweep of the playground every morning before the kids arrived.

Yes. They found discarded needles every week.

In a preschool playground.

So either the diabetics were throwing rage parties, or the "needle exchange" program simply doesn't work.

But that's just anecdotal...

By handing out free needles to anyone without question there is absolutely no incentive to return the used needles. This would be true for any group receiving something for free but we are talking about addicts acting 'responsibly', that should be funny, but it's not.

Dude.. CA has made mere possession a misdemeanor. Cite and release. They've increased the amount of theft that qualifies for a felony to $1,000. So you can steal up to $999 and be cite released...

CA chooses to early release felons instead of building or expanding prisons/jails... because jails are now allowed to house non-violent felons for as many years as they've been sentenced. Whereas before Jerry Brown, Jails were 1 year or less... but Jerry says non violent criminals (based on current charge, not past offenses) can be housed in county for years at a time.

So we reward bad behavior with a citation, or an early release... and wonder why crime rates are going up.

There are either zero consequences or minimal consequences for bad behavior. CA rewards bad behavior.

^^^ CA is a sanctuary state after all. That alone should tell you that CA has zero or minimal consequences for breaking the law.

No free needles out here that I'm aware of. But you can buy them for $1 without a prescription at the local pharmacy. Guess if the addict has to pay for his works, he's less likely to nonchalantly throw them away.
