El Cortez has cheap rooms, cheap food, low table limits and a ton of character. they have prime rib for some ridiculously low price.

I honestly haven't seen many homeless in this area.......and I spend probably 80% or more of my time in Vegas on Freemont and the downtown area. There are literally thousands of homeless on the strip........my least favorite part of Vegas.A trip to Casa Fuente and a night trip with wifey to the water show at the Bellagio is about the extent of my strip time.We might take a stroll thru Cesar's..........but then it's back to the action downtown.

Joel, here’s a full-on Gemini answer:

No, from a pure dollars and cents/sense standpoint. Cigars and drinks are w-a-y overpriced. And, iirc, with the renovations, the people-watching (i.e., the adjacent escalator) is no longer the same either. You can surely buy better smokes for the same prices online and do you really want to pay $18 for a pour of Weller 12?

On the other hand:

Yes, for the experience. Where else can you go to a walk-in humidor with just about every Fuente-associated cigar available for sale? And better yet, to buy HTF Casa Fuente cigars, drink a great mojito, or chose from their excellent bar selection. Smoke and drink in the company of like-minded BOTL/SOTL. It’s the experiences in life that make us richer. So go in, have a good time and close your eyes when you pay the tab.

The area of my brain that holds the Dollars and Cents/Sense thinking seems to go on vacation when I go to Vegas so I’ve gone to CF every time (...since 2011...) I’m in LV. So, yah, I’m more of an “experience” guy and while my wallet is lighter from those visits, believe my life is richer because of things like that.

Of course, ymmv, so take this with a grain of salt. Herfing

I'm not a huge fuente fan, although the anejos are pretty awesome... i dont mind paying for a good experience... but i also don't drink... and there are gonna be 20 thousand Irishmen And 50 thousand Russians in town at the time... i might just stay in my room....

20,000 Irishmen.........get out the room man there'll be more drunk video moments on those corners than Vegas has seen in years.

50,000 Russians........avoid the alleys and whorehouses.

It's been about 7-8 years since I was in LV, so I'll defer to your observations...

I do prefer Fremont and Downtown to the Strip...less expensive ... down to earth peeps... good eats and drinks for decent prices... Main Street Station's 777 for brews, onion rings and wings...Rosewood Steakhouse at California...Hugos at 4 Queens...quiet strip park within walking distance with plenty of benches and trees to enjoy a cigar...

You have named a few of the things that makes the downtown area more appealing than the strip. If you haven't been in 7-8 years .........there's been a few changes. One is Container Park catty corner from El Cortez on Freemont, some cool shopping but most importantly in a whiskey bar called Oak & Ivy.Pretty sure Rosewood Steakhouse is gone, the California was shut down for a few years but is now reopened,I heard there was some remodeling involved??Wasn't open our last trip.Main Street Station is one of our favorite breakfast stops.Me and Z spent a few hours in there a couple trips back choking down brews and bourbon.Couldn't smoke in the bar so eventually we found a more accommodating location.Hugo's should be a national landmark..........been in the 4Q's for as long as I can remember. Also enjoy the Chicago Brewery in 4Q's.........great pizza, good brew and booze and smoke friendly with 3-4 sporting events rolling simultaneously.Down Freemont, bout 4-5 blocks east of LV Blvd,is Atomic Liquors...........great history, fairly priced drinks, good food and SMOKE FRIENDLY.

Lots of great things going for the revived downtown area.

Dang...I'm gonna miss a great herf...on the bright side, I'll be on da Big Island with my wife, daughter and her family and her MIL...

will definitely have to return to LV and Fremont St...good to know there are places now where you can smoke a cigar and have a drink in some cool confines...

Few weeks away... All we've determined is that we're gonna eat way too much food and just generally enjoy not having 2 kids around for the first full weekend in 5 years...

Thought about a cirque show, but unless you're sitting pretty close I'm not sure it's worth it... And I'm not spending $600 to watch a bunch of fancy boys air wrestle each other in leotards... $200 maybe...

naw...her hubby, my best friend Charlie, passed away at the end of last year...she was my wife's best friend when they taught at the same school for many years...our families became closer when our daughter married their youngest son...

we invite her over frequently, especially to visit with her two grand-daughters... and have traveled with her since Charlie died...

Real absinthe... With the thuone in it, is a bit of a different buzz... But you really have to drink a ton to get any effect beyond just alcohol.

I don't believe any absinthe sold in us bars will have thuone however.

Really? I didn't look into it but assumed when I saw that there was an absinthe bar that laws had changed in the U.S.... Lame...

They may have.
But in early 2000s some manufacturers developed absinthe without the wormwood....

I haven't looked into it in a long time, so I'm not sure if the laws changed or if the non wormwood absinthe just became more popular

... correction.... I believe it is still made with wormwood, just a species of wormwood which does not have thuone.

You can buy the real stuff online. It isn't illegal to have shipped to the states. Just (last I recall) illegal to sell as a consumable.

Joel & Victor, here is a pretty good read on thujone in asinthe. Not sure of the veracity, but interesting nonetheless.

That's consistent with my experience. Drank a bunch in bars and clubs in prague many many years ago. Never noticed anything other then at most a strange slowing of the music once. And that could have just been the alcohol.

I think it's generally accepted that absinthe has so much damn alcohol in it that you can't drink enough to get the thujone required for any hallucinogenic affect without being so obliterated you wouldn't notices.
