More importantly, are your apps eavesdropping?

I'm not talking about just the "Ok Google" or Siri 'triggers'

I've told others that they're just being paranoid....that coincidences happen...that we forget that we googled something a couple days before talking out loud about it...but, I'm becoming increasingly unsure....I'm beginning to believe that they do hear....it bothers me a lot...but maybe too much.

Part of my unease comes from my overall discomfort with how much the big four tech companies really control our universe -- how often in recent years have you learned or researched something that google didn't have a hand in the answer...I aint skeered...yet...but a little nervous...if not of the tech, than of the obliviousness of the population to it

I believe they are listening, that's why I gave up the Phonesex....Anxious

Remember, just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you....Think

Yes...they do listen and while I have nothing to hide, I'm also not interested in my life being an open book to some giant corporation of the Gubmint. I don't have a smart phone and probably never will. I also don't have any of the Siri or Alexa nonsense either.

I listened to this podcast a number of months ago, which sort of tackled this topic, specifically with Facebook in mind.

https://www.gimletmedia.com/reply-all/109-facebook-spying

Short answer there, it currently appears that no they don't. However they do likely use all sorts of data about you, including knowledge of what websites you went to, what your friends like, where you are... etc etc.

But, that doesn't mean they won't start. So the answer is not necessarily always going to be no.
And, other apps might... however your phone should (android does) ask your permission specifically before giving any app access to your microphone. So they won't be able to until you activate that capability.

Right. Of course.

I sit on my lazy ass, ask Alexa game results, the weather in Boca or wherever, to tell me a joke, directions, order my stuff online, still sitting, make a call, remind me to remind the Mrs to take her pill at 6pm every day, create a calender of stuff I wanna do, traffic reports...long list David.
Nothing to do with my politics.

Almost forgot, best of all, she instantly plays any song (well, almost ) I ask for immediately.

Still. On my lazy ass. Or should I say lazy liberal ass.

Easy to say....but similar to any 'fine print vs. consumer' argument. How many people actually take the time to find out why an app is asking for certain permissions...or even deny? Not a whole lot, I'd guess....though maybe more lately (since Cambridge Analytica/FB news.)

I typically take a second or two to ask myself what permissions make sense. And yet, I just looked and I have TWELVE apps on my phone that have permission to access my mic. TWELVE!!

22 that are allowed to use my camera; and 32 that can 'use' my phone. Crazy.

So, I'm just going to assume for now that SOMEONE can view through my camera or hear through my mic even when I'm not actively using an obvious, open program/app.

Does 'access' to phone mean they can listen to my calls? Maybe?

I don't know about apple, but for my android, when an app accesses something for the first time (camera/mic/etc) I get a popup telling me that it is asking for permission to access .... whatever, and asks me if I want to grant it. Not sure if some apps are sneaking by, and obviously once you've granted it access once for a good reason it may continue using it after that for who kows what reasons....

but I'm not too worried.... yet

It was meant as a joke, Huck. I guess I should have added the (Sarcasm ) but I didn't think it was needed. I have Fire Tablets, so I use Alexa too.
