A polar bear was shot and killed after attacking a cruise ship employee who was leading tourists off a ship on an Arctic archipelago on Saturday, officials said.

The attack took place after the MS Bremen cruise ship landed on the most northern island of the Svalbard archipelago, a region located between mainland Norway and the North Pole, the Joint Rescue Coordination for Northern Norway said on Twitter.

The German Hapag Lloyd Cruises company, which operates the MS Bremen, told The Associated Press that two polar bear guards from their ship went on the island and one of them "was attacked by a polar bear and injured on his head."

The polar bear was then shot dead "in an act of self-defense" by the second guard, spokeswoman Negar Etminan told the

Authorities search the coastline, Saturday, July 28, 2018, after a polar bear attacked and injured a polar bear guard who was leading tourists off a cruise ship on the Svalbard archipelago archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. The polar bear was shot dead by another employee, the cruise company said.

The worker, a designated polar bear guard, suffered a head injury as he led tourists off the ship and was unresponsive when he was airlifted for medical treatment, Sky News reported. Etminan said the victim did not appear to suffer life-threatening injuries.

According to Hapag Lloyd Cruises, all of its cruise ships traveling in the region are obliged to have polar bear guards aboard.

Arctic tourism to the region has risen sharply in the past few years and is now in high season, as people travel to visit the remote terrain, glaciers, reindeer and polar bears. A Longyearbyen port schedule reviewed by the AP showed that 18 cruise ships will be docking at the Arctic port in the next week.

The animals typically prey on seals, and are known to be "masters of their environment" due to having no natural enemies, according to National Geographic.

Going to be hard to keep bringing the tourist in if the guides are shooting the bears for doing what bears do.

Probably should have stayed on the boat, dumbazzes.

This polar bear was not protecting his home... he was trying to eat a person for dinner...

unlike all the other bears out there, polar bears actively hunt humans as prey... not smart...

I say know your place on the food chain or you will be shown your place on the food chain...

Polar bears shouldn't be on a cruise ship anyways.

I blame global warming...the melting glaciers and shorelines reduce the area that polar bears can roam, putting them in closer proximity to humans...

They're welcome to inhabit the Coronado Islands... that would greatly reduce our seal problem, but significantly increase our bear problem.

One or two polar bears would be enough to exterminate the seals...and with so few of the bears, we should be able to fish around them...

unless they like what they see on the boat, after eating all the seals..........Gonz

Good thing it was a Polar bear. If it had been an unarmed brown (Grizzly) or black bear, it would have caused a media frenzy.

Too bad it wasn't a tourist instead of the poor slob taking the tourists to visit a remote location. Better yet, the guy in charge of merchandising on the ship. We just returned from a cruise, road and rail trip to Alaska. I was surprised at the level of merchandising on the ship, as well as stores owned by the cruise line in every port.

We had a great time that included landing a helicopter and a fixed wing plane on a glacier. I don't understand the compelling reason to land and walk around. That said, the snow landing and takeoff with skis on a plane was pretty awesome.

How do you catch a polar bear?

You make a hole in the ice and line it with peas. When the bear goes in to take a pea, you kick him in the ice hole..!!

There's only 25,000 polar bears left on the planet. No one will miss just one.

That's their excuse and they are sticking to it.

A man was killed and two others were injured after a polar bear attacked the trio of hunters, officials said Tuesday.

Solomon Malliki, the mayor of Naujaat, Nunavut, located in northern Canada, said the polar bear was shot and killed after attacking the hunters, according to Global News. The group was found in a common hunting spot on Lyon inlet.

"One of the hunters was deceased and the two others had minor injuries," the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement. "The initial investigation has revealed that the hunters were victims of a polar bear attack."

The hunters set out on Aug. 21 to hunt for narwhal and caribou before they were expected to return home on Thursday. Police were alerted on Sunday after the group did not come home. A search team and efforts by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center launched a search for the trio.

Boats and aircraft were helping with the search but could not reach the men due to ice blocking their way. The group were found on White Island and rescued by an icebreaking helicopter on Tuesday. The two survivors were not badly injured.

The name of the man killed was not immediately released but he was said to be an Inuit hunter, Global News reported. The death was being investigated.

The incident is Nunavut’s second fatal polar bear attack this summer. In July, Aaron Gibbons, 31, was killed while trying to protect his family from a polar during a family outing. The bear was shot and killed.

A black bear struck by an arrow recently mauled a Southern California hunter who approached the wounded animal to get a closer look, a report said.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported this week that the unidentified hunter suffered serious injuries during the mauling Aug. 24 in the San Bernardino Mountains. He was hospitalized.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the hunter suffered injuries to his upper torso and face.

The hunter was joined by two others at the time and reportedly believed the bear was dead when he approached the 300-pound animal. The bear later died, but the hunter’s condition was not immediately known.

A Russian scientist and a Czechoslovakian scientist had spent their lives studying the polar bear.

Each year they petitioned their respective governments to allow them to go to North Pole to study the bears. Finally their request was granted, and they immediately pack and go.

They reported to the ranger station and were told that it was bear mating season and it was too dangerous to go out and study the animals.

They pleaded that this was their only chance, and finally the ranger relented.

The Russian and the Czech were given portable phones and told to report in every day. For several days they called in, and then nothing was heard from the two scientists.

The rangers mounted a search party and found the camp completely ravaged, with no sign of the missing men. Following the trails of a male and a female bear, they finally caught up with the female. Fearing an international incident, they decided they must kill the animal to find out if she had eaten the scientist. They killed the female and opened the stomach to find the remains of the Russian.

One ranger turned to the other and said, " You know what this means, don't you?" The other ranger responded..

"I guess it means the Czech's in the male."
