Not sure he meant it as an insult, but I don't really care if he did.

Different doesn't always mean better or worse, sometimes it just means different.

I was at a tasting event once, hosted by the president of a very large and famous cigar company. Test petit coronas were distributed to all, with just numbers on the band, and we were all asked to describe what was in them. I nailed them all, down to the different growing regions and approximate percentages of different kinds of leaf. Afterward as people filtered out of the room, he came up to me, shook my hand and said "you have an exceptional palate!"

So, I pretty much give zero F's about palate insults from random internet people! Herfing

Just bustin' ballz.

People like what they like.

All I gotta say about your story, if it's true... then you probably smoke way too much :D

At least I have one! (rimshot smiley, except there isn't one, but there should be!)

It's fun busting balls!

And I'm not sure it's my actual palate "hardware" being abnormally good. My palate hardware might be normal, and it may have more to do with the process I've used for many years.

It boils down to just paying close attention to the composition (component tobaccos) of every cigar, usually found in its marketing writeup, as you smoke it and letting your brain notice correspondences over time.

Smoke three different cigars, all of which have Dominican Piloto Cubano in their fillers, but are different blends otherwise? Notice a common sub-flavor in all three? THAT is what Dominican Piloto Cubano tastes like! File it away in your brain.

Do that enough times over enough years, and you develop a mental database of "this sub-flavor = this kind of tobacco" entries.

Then someone hands you a new cigar, and you can easily deconstruct it into its component tobaccos, by taking each sub-flavor and "looking it up" in your memory.

It's fun, and it impresses people at tasting events, but it's otherwise mostly useless. Herfing

Meh, too much work. Either I like it or I don't. If I really like it, I might buy it again.

Not sure how you feel about using freefall? I got a five count variety box last week for $103 and I've seen the ten count drop from $195 to $210 depending on the size. I have yet to try one, was planning to let them rest until my 50th which is 2 years away... I'm hoping my noob palate will be able to appreciate them by then.

Ya, I was looking at that, but if I bought them, I would want the torpedos.

I would suggest smoking at least one before your 50th to make sure you like them that way you're not stuck disappointed on your birthday in case you don't ;)

So have you seen other sizes on freefall or just the sampler?

I got mine from a guy that sells cigars on Cigar Cartel. He works for some sort of cigar shop or distributor. I paid 200 but also got like 30 other cigars with it, including a bunch of Davidoff and other quality cigars. So I say I paid the 200 for the box and the rest were freebies. At the same time, I can easily say that the loose cigars are worth more than the $200, so the Opus box could have been the freebie.

Nah, they were sealed still. I feel comfortable that it wasn't shady. The dude sells a crap ton of cigars on there and only has positive reviews.

Yes, other sizes will be on freefall. The torpedo (piramide) boxes are usually offered about once every two weeks and the price has been dropping to around $205 on em.

Sweet, I'll keep an eye out. The one up currently is already almost up to $230... that price takes me out of the picture.

Yeah, me too, took a while to convince myself to pay the $20 each ransom.

Hmm, 20 each, only if it was a truly amazing cigar. I don’t fork over that kind of cash on a maybe. Now if it was a well aged God of Fire, I might be tempted.

The torpedo boxes are on freefall again, they're dropping to just under $205, if you're still interested.

I'd try one if I knew where to get any opus in AZ. I traded them all when I had a shpo that had them. I did smoke a couple and they were good but I really like the anjeos.

lol, been a while. When was the last time you tried one? I tried one when stinger came out here to AZ at the smoke shop, it was pretty freakin good.

I would pick up a box if the price was right and was one of the sizes I wanted.

I'm pretty sure at this point all stock has some age on them. Pretty sure that's why cbid has them up... they're trying to dump all they got left.

opelmanta1900 wrote:
Not saying they're bad, but for an opus they're pedestrian at best... it's definitely no power ranger, and for the price I'd opt for something tatuaje...

Also, pretty sure cbid got a bunch of these a few years back... at that same time my local Indian casino smoke shop started carrying them too... they weren't allowed to carry the real opus stuff but they were allowed to carry the lost city...

My first OX was a Lost City from Bassman and it was really good. I don’t know how much rest it had prior to our trade but I waited 3 years after receiving it and really liked it.

I don’t know what differentiates the OX blends from each other but would never turn one down if offered. Of course ymmv.

Yeah a few years back there was a LARGE release of Lost City, my local isn’t real fond of the Fuente rep because unless you move a certain $ amount you’re not getting much. They got 2 boxes of Lost City one each of two different vitolas.

At that time online vendors were constantly putting up singles for bid.

I had one and don’t even remember it

My shpo is feuding with the LFD rep. Plus side is all LFD are on sake. Down side is they aren't getting any more.

Only OX I've tried is the Lost City. Good, but curious how the other types ive had waiting compare

Yeah something has been up with production at LFD. My local shpo is fussing with their rep too, they had open orders that went infilled for over 6 months last year. They kept getting the COVID19 response. The ONLY cigars they got during that time was some Suave, 1994’s and Cabnet series 752’s….they just got in some refill mazos of LaNox and La Volcadas, along with a box of DLs.

Still haven’t had an opus but I changed my opinion on the don Carlos. Smoked one cheno sent me a bit back. Thought it was great. Like almost mentioned splitting a 50 brick of them. That deals gone now but the price was very good.
