Record players...

It's time to bust out the old Christmas vinyls... I have 2 record players... One is a piece of junk and the other won't turn on... Do they make affordable record players nowadays that aren't garbage? I've seen the Chinese things on eBay for under 50 but that's basically what I already have...

The player I have that won't turn on is a marantz 6100... Anyone know if it's worth having it looked at for repair? Do people even repair record players anymore?

The marantz 6100 is definitely worth getting looked at. I have a pioneer from the 70's that I've been able to keep going with parts I find on ebay when necessary. I also have an onkyo turntable from the 80's that I gave to my adult daughter when she went off to college. She's now graduated and moved on but still uses it almost daily. Again, I've had to find parts for it on ebay and keep it going for her as well, the only problem with that is she is 8 hours away now. So when I visit, I look it over to see if everything is good with it.

Check out craigslist. There are several people in my area the refurbish old turntables and re-sale them as a hobby, find someone like that and share a beer and a cigar so you can pick their brain for help.

I see them in thrift shops occasionally. Generally el cheapo's but an occasional piece that's a bit better.

When you say it won't turn on, what do you mean? Does it get power? I just had an old Pioneer I pulled out of storage, and because it had sat so long, the belt had decayed and slipped off. I lifted the turn table straight up and removed the worn belt....I ordered a new one online and put it on and it works like new....belt was about $4...

edit: after further thought I seem to recall it was around $7 IIRC

Sometimes newer receivers do not have a true phono jack. Aux wont do. Have you changed your stereo set up since last using the turntable?

It's an inherited record player, probably older than me... The people I got it from supposedly thought it worked...

When I plug it in, nothing happens... No on/off switch, but nothing happens... also, it's not hooked up to anything else... Just plugged into the wall... Does that matter?

I just removed the rubber mat thing that the records sits on and the round metal plate thingy underneath... There's some pieces of some rubberish looking stuff that I could believe was once a belt... Also there's like a gear thingy that isn't really connected to anything... I monkeyd with it and think it's in the right place...

Not talking No way... Those people will make fun of me... It's easier to come here and deal with people who just think they know what they're talking about...

You clearly have no f*cking idea what you are doing. My guess is it is auto or semi auto. Try moving the tone arm out towards the record and see if it turns on. What brand is it?

What Model Pioneer you got? I just picked up a PL-41 from an older Gent that brought it back from Vietnam. MINT condition. Just needs clean up, lubed, a new Belt and a new thrust bearing. Plinth and cover are PERFECT. HEadshell, cartridge and even the stylus are fine.

I have a Pioneer PL-514, I bought it new in around 1980....it's got a lot of mileage on it, but still works pretty good when I fire it up...
It was part of the first nice rack system I ever bought after I got my first apartment...all the other components are gone now, but that turntable keeps on spinning
I find I listen to CDs more often than not nowadays....

Are you sure the motor isn't spinning? If the belt is toast then it might be completely silent but still spinning.

You should try spinning by hand also.. it might just need a boost if it's been sitting.. if the belt is toast still try the drive gear.. and like Jade said, it may not engage until you move the arm... Mellow
