Before cutting, run the cigar upright under the faucet for a few seconds making sure to get the entire wrapper wet but not the foot, roll the cigar lightly on a paper towel to remove excess water, wait a minute or so, and cut and light. No more split wrappers in cold air. Yes, it really works. No, it has no bad effects, as long as you keep the foot dry (i.e. keep the cigar upright).

Xikar Stratosphere II lighter. It uses a "high-altitude windproof turbo flame" that's very different from ordinary jet lighters. It's said to light up to 12,000 feet reliably. Never tested it that high, but I still love the lighter! $26 or less with lifetime warranty.
