Hey old time cigar experts --

Here's my recent experience. Please tell me if I am crazy or learning something about cigars!

I smoked a RP Vintage 1990 yesterday that's been quietly sitting around for about 4 months. It was really good. At a certain point -- slightly more than 2/3's in it got harsh and kind of nasty. Rather than calling it quits, I purged and let it sit for enough time to burn through for about 1/4" maybe a little more, than I picked it up and it was no longer harsh and bitter, and was great down do the nub. Is this something that happens -- you can hit a harsh spot and then it gets good again?

Thanks.

Sometimes the torcederos throw in s few mouse droppings in RP cigars........just for chits and giggles.
Not to worry....

Or...

Sometimes a cigar can tunnel for a short period of time without the smoker noticing it, other than the draw getting weird, funny taste, lack of smoke, etc.
Purging will often "fix" this situation.

I think what happened is this guy went in with a total noob palate... Then, at a certain point -- slightly more than 2/3's in, his palate evolved rapidly... But then he purged the cigar and along with it the sensibility he had gained...

Probably the best advice you’re gonna get.

I don’t smoke anywhere close to how Charlie does (...then again, I very rarely review cigars...) and although this might not exactly fit, here’s also something to watch (...it’s pretty long though...):

I purge some cigars that have less aging on them at least once during the smoke. It really does clean up the flavor and almost resets the cigar.

I only notice I do that with cigars that are less then super premiums.
JMHO but I think you’re doing it right. Maybe purge it a bit earlier

I smoke a bit fast at times and have noticed that another smoker who smoked a good cigar in 40 minutes that I took an hour and six minutes to smoke. While I enjoyed that same cigar, they did not.
