Revisiting a "Legend"

Since I had a order heading my way anyway, I started looking around for anything I wanted to check out that I might pick up at cheap shipping.

Grabbed a 5-er of The CI Legends by Don Pepin for $8. Highest winning bid for them in this lot was $10.

When I tried one of these at the Superstore a number of years ago, my impression was that it was pretty good, but not worth the price when you could get REAL Pepin smokes here on C-bid for about the same price as the Motheship was selling the "Legends" for at the time.

Well several years later now and the verdict is about the same. The DP Legend I smoked after a week or so rest was very well constructed, burned great and had good flavor throughout. Much milder than the other offerings of his I have had. I would not classify this even as a solid "medium" bodied cigar until the last 1/3 or so. Although there is spice there, there is not the pepper blast he is so famous for in other smokes. So, at this price-point, it was well worth the purchase, but not a whole lot more given what other DP cigars go for on here. Under $3, with shipping, would be, i would say, what the Max-target should be on these.

Although it has been quite a while, I recall similar reactions to the Oliva and E.P Legends as well that I smoked. Good, but not good enough at standard CI prices to buy over Cbid prices on the real thing.

Well, the point of this is that it appears that the Mothership is dumping a bunch of the Legends here on Cbid this month. I have seen free-falls of boxes of 20 going below the $55 mark and 5-er auctions going for right around $2 a cigar -sometimes even less (but somebody does seem to love the Drew Estate ones as those seem to go higher, LOL)

So, if you ever liked any of the Legends but agreed that, although good, not worth the retail price, looks like now would be a good time to pick them up, especially if you already are going to have a shipment of something else in the hopper.

The CI Legends Olive Label by AJ Fernandez used to be pretty darn awesome. Then, they changed the label design of the Legends series and eliminated the different colors entirely. I called CI and asked if the AJ cigar had changed blend, they assured me it did not.

However the newer non-Olive banded ones don't taste as good to me. But, it could be my imagination, the power of suggestion, or the important fact that my actual-Olive-labelled ones are much older than the new white-banded ones, and we all know what age does to most AJ cigars (it does great things to them!).

Take those datapoints for what they're worth....

Many, many years ago I enjoyed Pepin, Perdomo, and with 12 months or more aging, RP Legends. They all took steep dive 7 or more years ago.
The first box of cigars I ever bought from CI (or maybe it was CBID) was Graycliff (purple.)
One of the more recent boxes of cigars I won from CBID was Purple Legends. They are mild, but extremely smooth and absolutely consistent....still a good morning cigar.

When I first smoked the CI Legends Pepin I thought they were great, so I bought more and let them rest a while. When I started smoking the rested ones I found that they had lost their flavor. I've heard the Drew Estates ones were good, but never tried one. Haven't bought any in years - now I see the labels have changed.

Except for the Drew Estates all the current Legends lines suck. All generic and hardly worth $2 per. The Last I have to try in the Pepin Garcia in a few weeks!
