An obvious way to get the benefit of both approaches is to cut the cellos in half so they only cover half the cigar.
If doing a top-half/bottom-half split, it's preferred to cover the top half with cello if the cigar is facing north, or the bottom half if it's facing south. A compass can help with this.
If doing a left-side/right-side split, covering the left side of the cigar with the cello is preferred, unless you live in Montana, Idaho, New Jersey or Georgia, where covering the right half is preferred.
It's sad I have to actually say such obvious basics that everyone should already know! Why isn't this in the FAQ?
