Not really looking to discuss leanings or bias, or even relative merits yet....just wondering what falls in....
I'm sort of thinking:
In:
ABC
NBC
CBS
CNN
WaPo
NYT
LATimes
NPR
WSJ
Bloomberg
Christian Science Monitor
BBC
Axios
CNBC
Hill
Politico
AP
Reuters
PBS
CSPAN
USA Today

Out:
Fox News
MSNBC
Vox
Huffington Post?
Breitbart
Federalist?

When you say 'MSM', are you thinking of very different sources?

Facebook is the best source for news... belongs in the "out" category...

interesting site that allows users to "rate" media outlets on left/right/center bias: https://www.allsides.com/media-bias/media-bias-ratings

I've looked at that allsides before....not sure how to determine whether the rating service is biased.

As far as people on interwebs rating anything.....always huge pitfalls

Depends on what you're trying to assemble with this list.

Many of the people who denounce "mainstream media" claim it's because it has a liberal slant.

But those same people have also in the past (prior to the narrative shifting with this president) that fox is the most popular news station because it tells the truth. So if it's the most popular, I would think it would be in the "mainstream media" list.

So you really have to define your parameters specifically here.

I'm not sure where onion belongs. It's been too accurate the past couple years.

I agree with dstieg... Having average internet people/bots vote on bias of a news site is a terrible idea.

Dunno what I am trying to assemble.....just think that a term being used frequently should have some definitions....even if everyone's definition is different, there should be some value in understanding what those are

it is not actual voting, but blind testing of sample stories, which is only part of their ratings formula...here's their methodology:

https://www.allsides.com/media-bias/media-bias-rating-methods

it gives you a starting point/quick reference check to evaluate a source, and when you look at their "judgments" of many of the ones on the "in" list, seems fairly accurate...

not advocating...just pointing to an option to quickly see if the source of a story has a history...

Mainstream: the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as normal or conventional; the dominant trend in opinion, fashion, or the arts.

By that (google) definition I think all those sources listed are mainstream... Some significant portion of the population somewhere considers them normal... Maybe not breitbart...
