My wife and I were shopping today for a vacuum cleaner. Checked Consumer Reports beforehand and off we went. We found CR's best buy but the price tag was missing, as we were waiting to find the price another gentleman comes along to purchase the same one. He's got his smartphone with the store's price which he shares with us. I thank him and proceed to mention that it's a CR best buy. He then tells me that it doesn't matter because they all SUCK! fog

Go for a SHARK, Moonie.
Half the price of a Dyson and works great.
Most popular vacuum among our Norwegian Elkhound Club (very hairy dogs that shed LOTS).

Almost none are built to last, but I have a Filter Queen in the basement that dates back to the late 60's or early 70s that still works fine. Shark seems to be a decent machine, but they don't look very durable.

Similar experience with the filter Queen. Parents bought in the early 80s and finally retired it about 5yrs back. Like you said, nothing lasts anymore. Tried explaining the concept of quality to the kid when he was talking about needing another "disposable" phone.

Kirby for the win... Nothing like it on the market... You can buy a refurbished one for less than $400 on eBay and as long as you don't vacuum up water or something terrible like that, it'll be the last vacuum you ever buy.... And it comes with the hose deal and attachments as well as a light carpet shampooer...

If you want new, you've gotta go through one of those door to door folk... They'll want $2k but their cost is about $900 so you can usually get it for that...

Only issue with Kirby is you've got to get up on your power lifting to haul that beast up and down the stairs

Ah, yes, stairs... I'm from California... We still have room enough to build out instead of up...

Another vote for the Shark, very light weight and works very well.

I used to work for a machine shop in Canton,Mass back in the early '80s that made many of the parts for Kirby vacuums...back when things were made from metal and built to last...fog

Most people don't like their kirby and I don't know if anyone ever shined their shoes with one. My stepson said it was the dumbest puchase he ever made. There's a good reason that they sell refurbished ones.

Been using mine 6+ years without issue... Love it.. Use it on the car, the mattresses, used it to suck up some spidermites from a house plant yesterday.. It's versatile and built to last... But it is a monster to drag around... If I had stairs I wouldn't have one...

to be honest, I don't remember the name of the place, other than it started with a K....I remember it was in a small industrial park near Cobb Corner Mall(maybe plaza)...there was a viaduct or arch type bridge that you had to drive under nearby....it was a long time ago, before my son was born...back in my drinking daysBeer

If not that same building, sounds like a short walk from it.
I've brought metal framed bar stools there to be welded, Kessler is virtually next to that big arched bridge. About a mile or so from Cobb Corner.

Jspear and Gene are CORRECT!!!

BUY A SHARK AT B.J.'s Club ( on sale) or from. BED BATH AND BEYOND ( WITH A 20% OFF COUPON)

THE BEST MODEL IS the SHARK ROCKET ULTRALIGHT...
$149 AT TARGET or $160 @ B.B.& BEYOND(20% COUPON
=$32.00 OFF which is $128 ,a great price) or B.J.'S CLUB ON SALE $129-139 SEVERAL times a year...

It has a WASHABLE HEPA FILTER, A CANNISTER / NO BAGS, REALLY long cord, picks up pet hair better than Dyson , very manueverable and LIGHT AS HELL!!...only detraction is the canister fills up very quickly and has to be emptied about 3-4 times on one house floor full of vacuuming ( small price to pay for a great product).

Do maids bring their own vacuum? I thought they used the one in the house.

The woman used to have a maid when she lived in her place in VA. I made her stop when we moved to SF, for 2 reasons....1- if you need a maid to help keep 450sqft clean you probably are disabled. And 2- it drove me nuts that she would clean the night before her maid came.

That's a good question... Probably don't want one bringing their own, bringing other people's dirt into your house...

Huh.
I would clean right after the maid came.

btw, the "450 sq ft disabled" line made me laugh more than it should have.

well, didn't he say he doesn't watch mainstream media?

now we have some idea about his POVs...

edit: my sister also cleans up before the maid comes...that sounds backwards to me...so tail and I DO have something in common...

well.... I don't have a maid, so that theory will never be tested...unless tail has one, but I'd have to see tail's maid first...

Back in the late '70's (right out of HS), I actually tried my hand at selling Kirby's door to door. IIRC those things sold for like $900 in the 70s. $2k today, eh? I will admit that they where one heck of a vaccum cleaner, though my current Sharks would give them a run for their money.
