Thought the house was extra cold this morning. The bedroom usually doesn't get much of the HVAC so it's hot in the summer/cold in winter so I ignored the chills at first.

But I went to the kitchen to start chopping taters for breakfast and it wasn't any warmer. Furnace fan was running, thermostat said "heat on" but the air was blowing cold from the registers and thermostat reading 58 with heat set at 64.

Turned off everything and turned back on, seems to be working again.

Ugh. Panic followed by paradise- although a frosty version of it.

Got a prime brisket from Sam's club. Trimmed it, then rubbed with a mixture of kosher salt, fresh cracked pepper and some cayenne.

It's on da smoker.

Got about 5 hours of sleep after work yesterday and maybe a couple more last night. I hate night shift.

Brined the turkey overnight after thawing it yesterday. Gonna stick it in the smoker for the day. Maybe do a half smoker half oven like I did with my last chicken which turned out well.

-20°F actual temp outside right now. I gotta run up to 3Floyds when they open in 2.5 hours to pickup some Behemoth for the wife's birthday.

Happens to us once a week or so... And our bedroom is the same way... I've changed the thermostat multiple times... Had a guy come look at it... No answers... Of course, at its worst the inside temp dips from 72 to 68 before i notice...

My guest room is the one that's warm in summer and cooler in winter. The master bedroom has 2 vents, so the room stays cooler/warmer in the appropriate season. Doesn't help that the guest room is above the garage.

Our master bed has like 6 vents... Unfortunately the previous owner also owned a construction company and added the master bedroom onto the house himself...

Our heating and air is a little different than many I think... Underneath our house is sealed.... Hot and cold get pumped under the house and out whatever vents they find... No duct work I think it's the correct way of saying it...

Anyway, previous owner added the master bedroom but didn't increase the blower size so regardless of our many vents, air rarely comes out of them...

Stay warm. On my way to the dentist this morning and the car showed it was -4.

Thank goodness the district decided to close schools due to the extreme temps.

My dog doesn't even want to go outside to use the bathroom d'oh!

I do not recall schools in RI, at least in North Kingstown, ever being closed because it was cold when I was growing up. Only when the snow was so deep the buses couldn't run, but never for the temperature.

It's warmed up to just below zero depending on the thermometer. My truck was reading -3, the remote sensor mounted on the side of my camper reading -6 and the remote sensor on the back of the house -1.

Regardless, it feels totally tolerable outside when dressed appropriately. Doesn't hurt so much to breathe and didn't get much mustache frost while I was out there.

Picked up new furnace filters (likely culprit in the shutting off - the overtemp sensor was tripping the burner off which means there wasnt enough airflow through the heat exchanger.

Also swung by 3Floyds and got wife's birthday beers. When I started buying them for her birthday they were $10/bottle. Now they're up to $17. If it wasn't a birthday gift I wouldn't be buying.

Turkey's done.

I don't hate cats but I don't like cats in my yard... They crap in the vegetable gardens and they kill a lot of beneficial creatures... And apparently one of the neighborhood felines has decided we're friends... Killed one of our cedar wax wings and left it at the back door, all nestled up in a blanket...

when our cats were young and frisky, they'd leave presents on the patio near the door...pieces of lizards, rats, mice, birds and bugs...as they aged, their hunting skills diminished...

stomach pain better, so I ate an old-fashioned buttermilk doughnut and apple fritter with black coffee....burp...

Well... Backup house is out. We were expecting 50k reno needed and where the seller was we didn't think we would get our money back.
We aren't really worried about making anything, but want to make sure we don't get soaked after 5 years.

So now we're on backup backup houses. Had the realtor do a video conference call this morning while he walked through two homes.

Since the cold has lifted and it's a tolerable zero degrees I went out to check on the chickens. All still alive somehow. Topped off food and water, gave the friendly ones some pets and a few strawberry caps left from breakfast.

Why not do a short term rental while you look? Even 1yr rental early termination fee shouldn't be more than 1mo rent. I hate moving as much as anybody but if I were going cross country I'd accept a two move plan to find the right place.

Meh... Woman doesn't want to unpack and pack. And she's a pain in the azz when it comes to "then just don't unpack anything more than we need"

Not staying forever... So I'm not too worried about choosing wrong. Just don't want to choose a place that will cost money to get out of.

Nah. The mean ones will just bite/scratch you and ignore the treats. They don't seem to care about the treats, just blood.

Fair enough. I can see both sides of that.

I could deal with a couple storage units and live on a few boxes of chit till we could unload. But I'd much prefer fill a semi trailer and dump once.

The places in the locations we really wanted needed too much work. And given that we would just be closing when we move, we would be moving in, as well as demolishing kitchens at the same time. Since the woman needs a kitchen to make her dogs food and functional refrigerators/freezers to keep it .. and she'll be almost out after a road trip... We would be in a tough place.

If we had been smart we would have bought a month earlier and had the renos done before we arrived. So... New construction it is. This will possibly be the first time I've ever lived in a subdivision.
