Autonomous Vehicles?

Yesterday I was driving in Scottsdale when one of these grocery delivery vehicles pulled up beside me. They are called "Nuro" and look like a tall VW Bug with two doors on the side to load and unload. No driver.

Anybody else have these things roaming around in their neighborhoods?

You already have 5G there? I thought it was necessary for the next gen self drivers.

Didn't Uber try this and kill someone already? Not a fan of driverless cars. Plus how are the police departments and insurance companies going to make money off DUIs?

Also fairly opposed to most the driver assist tech currently on new vehicles. Anything that allows the driver to become more comfortable not paying attention is not the best idea

And it opens the door for Skynet and the rise of the machines

There are a lot of test autonomous vehicles floating around here.

Some have drivers present in case.

Mostly they're irritating because they get extra cautious with drivers and pedestrians.

So, when does some terrorist group pack one of these full of explosives and program it to drive right into their target?

Meh. That seems like a lot of work when they can go low tech and get a volunteer and a cheap car.

Unless it's a really non-committed terrorist group that's not willing to sacrifice. I suppose that might occur.

Yeah... Likely. Or a counter protester who wants to drive his car into an anti Confederate statue protest but doesn't want to get his hands dirty....

I can guarantee you one thing. Regardless of politics... It's going to be a white male. That's almost a certainty.

But then wouldn't the autonomous vehicle end up getting all the virgins? Think

forget where, but recently a guy was arrested, he was inebriated and sleeping behind the wheel...or some similar violation.

Cops pulled a car in front of his and slowed down gradually until stopped.

After the dust settled it was found that the person who was in the car and was supposed to be monitoring everything was looking down and texting when the accident happened. Video feed showed this clearly.

This is a pilot test delivery vehicle but has NO human on board. So far only allowed in one zip code from one grocery company. The person getting a delivery has a code to unlock the hatch and take the groceries. Not sure how long it will be before one of these is hijacked.

The future is upon us. There will be a few hiccups but it's coming. The Rich must get RICHER!!! Didn't I hear that there are Self flying vehicles in Dubai? Ritchie Riches decided they'd skip building highways and just buy Flying Teslas!

I heard the new Winnebagos have such an advanced auto-pilot system. that the driver can set auto and go take a shower or make a sandwich while the vehicle continues driving....that would save quite a bit of time on road trips...Anxious

Wouldn't that still mean the self driven car did not stop on it's own when coming up on a pedestrian? I only remember the headlines, never looked further into it.

I am sorry but replacing a human on an assembly line is one thing, replacing a human for everything is another. Not a fan at all and would love to see laws against this kind of stuff before we become the country that the movie Idiocracy depicts. Everyone relying on a computer to do everything and the largest company providing everything while we all become gradually dumber.

I actually think the comment about a self driven car bomb was interesting. I would bet that nobody has even thought about that situation and how to control something like that, too busy counting their profits at all costs.

I'm in no way defending self-driving cars but it was also found that the auto braking on that car was disabled at the time.

When anything can be hacked a car can be used for any purpose the hacker wants. This has already been demonstrated.

Ok, so the car was not on auto pilot then...makes more sense then on why the driver would have some fault.

We have autonomous cars all over the place here in South Carolina. They contain idiot drivers on their cellphones. They are easy to spot sitting in front of a green light with a line of frustrated human drivers behind, in ditches, on top of pedestrians and going down the road swerving and jerking as the human takes back control occasionally.

Agreed, and an alarming rate of no seat belt use fatalities.

THE O.P. IS A Totally stupid idea....

Robots in factories are great.

Self driving cars? NOT SO MUCH ....
Opens pandora's box for morons
TOO lazy to drive...my guess is Michael Bloomberg WOULD have about 20 of them?

BUT ....IN REALITY...

...Bloomberg pays a butler to dress him, a tailor to make his clothes, a personal assistant to buy his food and pay his bills, chefs to cook his meals, maids to clean his hut and do his laundry, security details to protect him and have the best offensive firearms on earth along with all the permits to do so....
And THEN ...THE^^^ LAZY^^^ ALOOF F*K HAS CHAUFFERS TO DRIVE HIS CAR....HE IS TOO ALOOF TO HAVE A SELF AUTONOMOUS CAR WHICH HE CANT ORDER AROUND.

I have driver assist that remains in the lane. It's Great with cruise control.

Wifey's new 2018 CRV has the adaptive cruise control. Hate the damn thing. When a car gets a little close (like 3 car links) it hits the brakes whereas a normal driver would just ease off the throttle for a few seconds.

I've also heard several stories on the lane driver assist where it will actually try to fight you during sudden need to evasively maneuver. Bad mojo in my opinion

Her car will just vibrate the wheel if you change lanes without the signal being on.

My parents just bought a new car. Let me take it out for a drive. Dad told me to take my hands off the wheel and let it drift. Beep beep beep, back in the center. I went probably two full miles without touching the wheel, it was bizarre.

I see the benefit, and the bane.

Great feature, signaling lane changes is a rare thing in my experience.

It's more rare than it should be. While I enjoy the game of constantly anticipating stupidity, I do prefer it being telegraphed for me

pull in front of it and slow to a stop...just don't expect it to follow you into the breakdown lane.

But I assume a driverless car doesn't break rules and should not need to be pulled over.

My guess is that by 2050....

If the world still exists....

You will have to ask permission to drive anywhere...
And they will track you 100%...

No more Sunday drives for absolutely no reason...
