Learned something new today.
I always thought a petard was a banner or something, and visualized this saying much differently.

Apparently a petard is a small explosive device. And the saying came from Hamlet.

So now, if you were like me and didn't know this before, now you do.

The life of a grenadier was often short and explosive.

If you hoist yourself with your own petard, what is that, a d*ck push up or a d*ck pull up?

You went to school in the northeast, no? English class was a whole lot of reading and discussing Bill Shakespeare, am I right?

I do not recall that phrase, however... or a lot of the other ones for that matter.

I've always (within the span of my memory) had a general sense of the meaning (to bring about one's own ruin)... But I always assumed the mechanics behind the saying were much different. I don't know where I ever got the incorrect idea of what a petard was.

yeah, it wasn't from a Shakespeare segment in English class.
I think more like one of those things when I read it again or someone mentioned the phrase and we looked it up.

Prior to that I assumed it meant to impale oneself...so assumed a petard was a sword-like weapon.
