I work with a guy from the Dominican Republic. He goes back 2 or 3 times a year.

What does the general population here recommend from PDR, La Aurora, and LFD?

He gets them cheap there and can bring 100 cigars back at a time.

I have never had any of these brands.

If ya'll could, point me in a direction.

I feel like LA is pretty solid across the board and haven't had anything I've disliked. As far as favorites:

Untamed - might be discontinued at this point
Preferidos - Maduro, Cameroon, and Sumatra my favorites
Escogidos - prefer the maduro
The newer ADN Dominicana very good also
1495 and 1495 Brazil to round out my top choices

Stopping now before I simply list the entire catalogue

I’d stick with LFD’s all the way.
Ligero
Double ligero maduro
Colorado oscuro
Ligero cabinet
Andulasian Bull
Maybe some special releases from Litto.

Whistle will come along and tell you what to get...

Thanks for recommendations so far.....

I guess I will be putting a list together for him.....

Don't think I will go 5 boxes deep the first time around. Would hate to have 5 boxes of smokes I don't like.

He should be going next month.

When he gets there he is gonna call me with prices.

Ill post them here in case anyone is interested.

Stick with LFD........Ligero and Double Ligero. If you like a more mild cigar the Suave is actually pretty damn good for a connecticut wrapped stick. If you like a really earthy stick the Colorado Oscuro is excellent with morning coffee. The La Nox line is excellent.......I love the Petite, also comes in CG vitola.Anyway you get something LFD you don't like let me know........I'll take em off your hands.

never been to the DR, but somewhere through the cobwebs of my addled brain I seem to have picked up this tidbit:

the best cigars from the Dominican are exported. It is nearly impossible to buy a good cigar on the island.

that could be a 15 year old news flash, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

What's today? JK

I distinctly recall being told this info.

I heard/read something to that effect as well, but I’m not at all sure if it Dominican, or Honduras, or??
But I’ve heard something like that dang it...

HA!
I’m sure your friend can get some good cigars there.
Heck the Fuente factory is there,, and I believe they have tours and such
Other cigar houses do tours, etc.

But simply going to a cigar shop to buy cigars??
Maybe that might not yield the savings one might expect?
No clue, but worth looking into on your part, or maybe your friend has ideas?

Like others have said, you can't go wrong with anything LFD. Haven't had one I didn't like.

Ligero cabinets with the Oscuro wrapper are phenomenal and I like all the others listed a lot as well, but not mentioned was the Litto Gomez line awesome.

If I remember right Fuente JUST recently started tours and I don’t think it’s at all like DE where it’s as accessible year round or as frequently.

Frank I believe there is a hefty tax? So not a lot are sold domestically as most can’t afford them. I believe the most popular cigar IN the DR is a machine rolled........ Thundergerbil would be the authority on this I would trust, he’s the smartest smartazz on CBid no doubt.

LA Preferidos Ruby has always been 1 of my favorits. A little bit of sweetness & a little bit of pepper.
Also can’t go wrong with the LFD Ligero.

PDR only had a couple that I recall being great.. .one was an 18something with dark blue, maybe purple band ....dark wrapper and sweet chocolatey flavor.

LFD has many good lines....most are on the stronger side. DL was mentioned above....I really liked that in the Chiselito size. Some of Litto's more limited releases blow away the regular lines. Pretty much anything with SmallBatch, or Limited, or Press in the name.

Nothing from LA that I still seek out. Used to be a 1492 or something that was fairly cheap here that was decent

One LFD I would not recommend is the Alcalde- very mild and little taste to me.
