Ocasio-Cortez takes a victory lap after Amazon scraps plans to build in New York

Quote:
Notch another victory for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The freshman Democratic representative celebrated online retailer Amazon’s decision Thursday to scrap its plans to build a new headquarters in her New York City district.

“I think it’s incredible,” Ocasio-Cortez responded when asked to comment on Amazon’s about-face. “It shows that everyday Americans still have the power to organize and fight for their communities and they can have more say in this country than richest man in the world.”

Earlier Thursday, the company announced it was reversing the plan, announced in November, to build new East Coast headquarters buildings in New York City and in Arlington, Virginia. The Virginia part of the plan will go ahead. The company said it would not look for a new location to replace the cancelled $2.5 billion project.

"After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens,” Amazon spokeswoman Jodi Seth said in a statement.

Ocasio-Cortez was one of the leaders of the fight against the proposed deal, largely over the $3 billion in tax breaks the city and state promised the company.

New York’s chronic shortage of housing and the overburdened mass transit system were also cited by opponents.

The deal would have meant an estimated 25,000 new jobs for the city.

“We were subsidizing those jobs,” Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday. “The city was paying for those jobs. Frankly if we were willing to give away $3 billion dollars for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district, ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that amount of money if we wanted to.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who partnered with Gov. Andrew Cuomo in hammering out the deal, issued a stinging statement over the company’s latest decision.

“You have to be tough to make it in New York City. We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world. Instead of working with the community, Amazon threw away that opportunity,” de Blasio said in a statement. “We have the best talent in the world and every day we are growing a stronger and fairer economy for everyone. If Amazon can’t recognize what that’s worth, its competitors will.”

Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who represents New York’s 12th District, where the Amazon headquarters was slated for construction, expressed her disappointment

Cuomo was also disappointed, but he took out his anger on the legislators who worked to torpedo the deal.

“[A] small group [of] politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community — which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported bringing Amazon to Long Island City — the state's economic future and the best interests of the people of this state. The New York State Senate has done tremendous damage. They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity.”

First thing, polls showed that 70% of New Yorkers wanted Amazon and their 25,000 jobs. So how is this a victory for "the people" of New York?

She also made the following statement from the article - "Frankly if we were willing to give away $3 billion dollars for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district, ourselves,". This just goes to prove that she has no clue about ecomomics. Hate to break it to you Cortez, but this was $3 billion in future tax incentives, not money out of the city's coffers. There is no $3 billion for you to invest in the district as you propose. Plus you threw away 25,000 jobs, along with all the payroll tax revenue, city tax revenue and state income tax revenue those jobs would have produced.

I know she gives some of you a hardon, but really folks, she has the IQ of a squirrel.

But it is the radical extreme left eating their own, so I'm down with that.

Bezos to AOC: if you like your sh*thole you can keep your sh*thole...

Seriously, all the more reason AOC should be allowed to act as she sees fit... Silencing her because of her foolishness will only enable her constituents... I say give her full run of ny and within 3 years they'll be running her out of town on a rail...

I dunno.
Any time a company like Amazon moves somewhere like NYC there are winners and losers.

There was a lot of people who didn't want Amazon in NYC (I don't believe AOC was even leading this, she just seems to agree with it).

There are some real problems in Seattle from Amazon, and some real questions about just how helpful those new jobs are to the community, vs the unintended costs. In some cases when these companies come in, the jobs are filled by people from outside the city (see San Francisco) who then come in and immediately raise property values, without any of the former residents seeing any benefit (unless they choose to simply sell their place and leave).

As with most things, it's important to consider all sides of the issue, rather than just jump on "all jobs good despite what the city or state may have to give up to get them". An example would be foxxcon and the major concessions given to a company which has been scaling back it's plans ever since.

I have a suspicion that her IQ is likely higher than Dave's.... It may still be lower than a squirrel... But there's still a lot of room to work with down there.

^As I've said before, I love you too, man.

[pondering mode]Should I mention that in the early and late 80's I took 2 professionally administered IQ/aptitude tests as part of my employment? The owner requested them of all upper management at the time. The earlier one showed an IQ of 157 and the later one an IQ of 158. No, in hindsight I won't mention it. It's far more fun letting Victor think he's more intelligent.[/pondering mode]

So if the company moves to San Francisco, and the "San Franciscans" don't want or aren't qualified for the jobs, no one from the surrounding communities should get those jobs either???Think

Sounds like you might agree with Ocasio-Cortez's policy of “economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work.”
I'm looking forward to it myself. After all these years of working, I'm starting to feel a bit unwilling to work if I can have economic security and fish moreGon' Fishing

Corporate welfare cost all taxpayers money.

To wit, without corporate welfare, i.e., tax incentives, the draconian taxes of NY State and city are not attractive to business.

Dave... I can only judge your IQ based on your words here.

You make conclusions based off incomplete information and judge goals/values the same as approaches. You appear to be very susceptible to partisan manipulation...

Perhaps your IQ has dropped since the 80s.

You make assumptions... I'm not saying what's best. I rarely do.
But I see the value in an argument that if a city is going to provide enormous tax breaks or other concessions, but the wages will go to people outside the city, that city may want to reconsider whether it's a smart move to provide those concessions.

For all of this, I have not looked at the actual numbers to decide what I think the best decision is. I just acknowledge that the thought process is valid. And ultimately the final numbers would decide what the best decision is. These days city leaders seem to get caught up in attracting big projects without necessarily making sure the numbers will work out, or perhaps without properly assessing the likelihood of certain factors occurring which may change the numbers.

It's too easy to just line up and assume that every decision someone makes on one side must be the worst and they must be as dumb as a squirrel. Hell, I've even said trump made good decisions both times he did. And given that I don't believe AOC was directly running a campaign against Amazon in NYC, its odd to really publicize her agreement with them leaving. It smacks of propaganda.

Big businesses play local governments against one-another for the best deal: low or no cost land, tax exempt status...local govt are always willing to cut a deal for the promise of good high paying jobs for their residents...big businesses play one city against several others to cut the best deal for themselves...

multi-million/billion dollar companies should not be allowed to take government welfare...that should be reserved for small start-ups...once the company matures into a profitable enterprise, it should pay its own way, including purchasing land for expansion...

this is like NFL owners demanding that local citizens pay for a new stadium...everyone pays, even the vast majority of peeps who DGAF about football...NFL owners laugh all the way to the bank...

The problem I see with AOC is that she seems to be getting traction. Even here would be an example of that. I don't think any of the liberals here have created any threads about her, but maybe I missed one. There have been several threads from conservatives here. I think that follows the pulse of the nation to a certain extent. There is the old saying that any publicity is good publicity. Her core values do not align with mine, but I think they resonate with millennials. If she is out in front of the news on a regular basis she could develop a core such as Trump has. I want her no more for president than I want Trump for president.

spey, most libs are grateful that young libs with expansive and progressive ideas have won elections to national office...it sure beats having the status quo shoved down our throats...

as for why libs aren't speaking up much on their behalf, it seems to me that if you're grateful/winning/satisfied with the state of things, there's no reason to crow...kinda why I stayed out of the politics section when Obama was in office...tough to watch grown men cry...

but when you are not happy about the state of things, you're more motivated to speak up...prolly why there's so much whining here about AOC and the other young female Dems making news...the resident cons see their reign threatened by these upstarts...

if the newbs are savvy, they'll learn and understand what it takes to accomplish big things, moderate their objectives and learn to build coalitions...otherwise we'll see a revolving door...

most of the Trump topics here have been originated by libs opposed to his behavior and decisions...the only exception to this rule is tail...he just likes Trump regardless, and feels a need to let us all know how deep is his love... he revels in our outrage at his hero and he finds every reason to crow....that's how Pats fans roll...

As for AOC, you're not truly listening to the complaints, are you?
It isn't normal babble about her politics that sets her apart.
It's her complete lack of intelligence and common sense.
It's not a stretch to believe she may be the dumbest person in congress, and it wouldn't even be close.

I agree that Amazon will probably not be paying any taxes, but there are still jobs for 25,000 people who will make on average $150,000 each. At 35% taxes that is over $1,312,500,000 in taxes that they will be paying. Add in the almost 2.5 billion dollars that they will be earning and spending a large part of, then it starts to sound good.

Mtnmn... You're not wrong. That's why cities have always thrown so much incentive in the form of tax breaks ...

But there are real downsides to that... I know it seems odd. But I can tell you as a person living in SF, that there is a segment of the population (usually the ones there before the company comes in ) who get no benefit from the growth, and see a significant downside. The city grows... $$ comes in... And it makes life very difficult for some.

I'm not making a value judgement one way or the other, but I'm only trying to point out that there is a real downside to these sort of things. Some times the upside outweighs it... But even if it does you are actively sacrificing some of your population to make the city better.

Actual word for word quote:

“Millennials and people, you know, Gen Z and all these folks that will come after us are looking up and we’re like: ‘The world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change and your biggest issue is how are we gonna pay for it?’”

You can also throw in my OP where she though NYC had 3 Billion dollars laying around to give to Amazon.

Plus there's the oldie but goodie "Unemployment is low because people are working 80 hours a week".

Interesting...
So the first quote, her diction is terrible. But I've seen you specifically defend Trump's speaking. Do you want me to pull any of his quotes (with the verbal tics) up? The quote inside her quote is her representation of the views of her generation. She's not stating the world will end in 12 years, she's stating that this is the view her generation has... That there is urgency. (We actually don't know if it is right or wrong... I think we have at least 50 personally until it's uninhabitable)

Second quote...I would need to see the direct quote. But 3b in tax cuts and incentives is not cash in hand, but why would you think she thought it was cash in hand? It's potential tax revenue which is being forgone ... If someone else uses that property, guess what, there will be tax revenue for that property (or whatever other tax breaks are offered.)

3rd quote... That's an interesting idea. It's been floated 50 years ago that unemployment went up because women entered the workforce... Well... If I were working 2 jobs (let's be realistic and say 2 30hr/week jobs) ... That's 2 jobs off the market for 1 person. I would have to look at data to see if there has been a rise in people working 2 jobs, you hear about it anecdotally, but that's not data. But the statement is not what I would call an indication of low intelligence, unless you already have the data that shows it's incorrect.

Ok. I just double checked the " two jobs" quote. It is incorrect, as the number of people who are working 2 jobs has decreased (slightly) over the past 20 years... It's somewhere around 5% of the workforce.
Now... It's likely higher in cities (new york/SF it's much more common I think), but her quote is wrong.

Does that make her unintelligent for stating incorrect facts?

Interesting... I dug into it a bit and here's a Forbes article which suggests the numbers the feds keep may be off a bit...

https://www.forbes.com/sites/eriksherman/2018/07/22/more-people-probably-work-multiple-jobs-than-the-government-realizes/

The interesting part of this is the issue people seem to have with her statement makes no sense. The biggest complaint (other than the numbers not matching reality) is that her method of calculating doesn't match that of the BLS (which calculates based on unemployed/ total labor force) but that shows a lower intelligence of the people complaining than anything else... Because they aren't looking at how someone working 2 jobs (or many people working 2 jobs) influences the job pool and labor availability.

I dunno...
Looks like of the 3 quotes we've got a poorly grammared exaggeration, a possibly technically correct statement, and a factually incorrect statement which still shows an understanding of the labor pool.

For a politician I'd put that in the middle of the pack.

Come on Victor, you're smarter then this. Unemployment numbers have to do with the number of people unemployeed. Not the number of jobs available. Folks working two jobs would reduce the number of available jobs, resulting in INCREASED unemployment, not decreased unemployment as she claims.

Oh, and please refresh my memory on where I defended Trump's speaking, when he actually says stupid things. The only times I remember defending him was when the media had deliberately removed words from his sentences in their quotes, to make him look like he couldn't complete a sentence. This has happened multiple times. I've seen broken sentence quotes, and have gone back and looked at the actual videos. In the videos, he would speak in complete sentences, but the media quotes where many times broken and incomplete sentences.

I've also stated multiple times on this board that someone needs to take away his Twitter account so he'd stop making a fool out of himself.

You want quotes you can look them up.

But when someone thinks that a city will save money when a company leaves that would have been given tax incentives, then it means they don't understand what a tax incentive is.

Kinda important for a politician to understand that minor little kernel, dontcha think?

Is it truly a downside?
That would imply that letting poor people maintain their station in life is what a municipality is supposed to do.

"We can't let Big Corp move in because property values would increase and joe dirt couldn't afford his taxes."

So the "downside" would be that joe dirt sells at a huge profit and moves elsewhere.

Not sure this is a downside.
Sure, his hand is forced. But he still benefits financially.

I'll play.

“Americans have the sticker shock of health care as it is,” said Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who won her Democratic primary in New York. “And what we’re also not talking about is why aren’t we incorporating the cost of all the funeral expenses of those who die because they can’t afford access to health care? That is part of the cost of our system. “

Summary: Universal health will save on funerals.

Tail.... Id be curious what specific quotes you have that show her lack of intelligence...

Remember... She's only the congressperson. It might be worth comparing her to... I dunno... A presidential tweet or something...?

Anyway... I'm interested in quotes showing her lack of intelligence... Not lack of common sense... Intelligence. "Common sense" is a difficult thing to nail down, to prove or disprove...

“If we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that money, if we wanted to,” Ocasio-Cortez said last week.

"We need to kick luxury real estate lobbyists to the curb and defend working people’s way of life. Skyrocketing cost of living is a national crisis that CAN be addressed. It’s not just an NYC issue - it’s happening in every US metro area.”

“It’s time we stand up to the luxury developer lobby,” she said in a speech last April. “Every official is too scared to do it - except me.”

So part of her complaint about Amazon moving in was that it would raise rent prices in the area, essentially pricing out the poor... Which is what the area she lives in has done... Navy Yard is a neighborhood where rent is kept inflated to make sure the people who rent aren't poor... They don't want poor people around... Not down the street, not around the corner, not in their Yard....
